Oligosarcus pintoi was described by Amaral Campos in 1945, with the type locality given as Rio Mogi-guaçu in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the valid combination as Oligosarcus pintoi Amaral Campos, 1945. The species belongs to the genus Oligosarcus, a Neotropical group of small to medium-sized characids characterised by a projecting lower jaw, well-developed teeth, and an overall predatory body plan — sometimes called 'daggerchars' or 'dogfish tetras' in the hobby, though the group is seldom kept.
FishBase places Oligosarcus within the subfamily Stethaprioninae, a placement that reflects ongoing molecular and morphological revision of the broad Characidae. The genus is distributed widely across South American drainages east of the Andes, but individual species tend to be restricted to particular basins. Feeding
