Phenacogaster megalostictus is a small characid from the blackwater rivers of the Guiana Shield, known from the Rio Negro system of Brazil and the Essequibo drainage of Guyana. Reaching around 1.5 in in standard length, it is one of several similar spot-patterned members of the genus Phenacogaster — a group of slender, schooling tetras whose taxonomy has been progressively clarified by molecular work in recent years. The IUCN assessed it as Least Concern in 2022, reflecting its broad presence across two major drainages.

Taxonomy & naming

Phenacogaster megalostictus was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1909, placing it in the genus Phenacogaster where it has remained. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records Eigenmann, 1909 as the valid authority. The genus Phenacogaster belongs to the family Characidae and encompasses a number of small, schooling tetras distributed across northern and central South America.

A 2023 molecular species-delimitation study (available via PMC10239021) confirmed P. megalostictus as a valid species within the P. pectinata species group, a clade of closely related Phenacogaster that share overlapping ranges and similar external appearance. That kind of molecular corroboration has been important for the genus because many species are difficult to separate on meristic characters alone. No synonyms are currently listed for P. megalostictus in the major catalogs.

Morphology

Phenacogaster megalostictus is a small, slender characid reaching approximately 1.5 in standard length. Like other members of the genus it has the typical high-backed, laterally compressed tetra body plan, with a small adipose fin behind the dorsal. The common name 'Large Stain Glass Tetra' references the large, prominent dark body spots or blotches that characterise the species — megalostictus derives from Greek roots meaning 'large-spotted' — set against a translucent to silvery body.

Beyond the prominent spot patterning, the species is otherwise unexceptional in external form: small terminal mouth, moderately large eyes proportional to head size, and the typical translucent flank tissues common to many small stream characids. Sexual dimorphism is subtle and not well documented in the literature; females are likely fuller-bodied when gravid, as is common across the family.

Habitat

Phenacogaster megalostictus is recorded from the Rio Negro (Amazon basin, Brazil) and the Essequibo drainage of Guyana — both systems of the Guiana Shield with acidic, soft, tannin-stained blackwater conditions. The Rio Negro in particular is one of the world's most extensive blackwater river systems, with extremely low mineral content, pH values that can fall below 4 in remote reaches, and characteristic dark coloration from dissolved humic acids.

FishBase records water parameters of 70–82 °F and pH 5.9–7.2 for the species. The upper end of this pH range likely reflects conditions in the Essequibo drainage, which may include waters of somewhat higher buffering capacity than the deep blackwater zones of the Negro. Like other small tetras of the region, P. megalostictus probably occupies slower-flowing marginal and flooded habitats — creek edges, igapó floodplain forest, and tributary mouths — rather than main-channel currents.

Feeding

Phenacogaster megalostictus is described as omnivorous, with a diet encompassing algae, small invertebrates, and small fish. This breadth is consistent with foraging strategies documented across Phenacogaster and related characid genera in Neotropical blackwater systems, where resources can be seasonally patchy and opportunistic generalism is advantageous.

In the aquarium, a diet of small-particle prepared foods supplemented with live or frozen invertebrates — Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, micro-worms — will suit it well. The inclusion of small fish in the natural diet is worth noting for tankmate selection: very small nano species may be at risk with a well-conditioned adult group, though at 1.5 in the fish is itself limited in what it can take.

Mating

Detailed courtship observations for Phenacogaster megalostictus are not documented in the available literature. By analogy with the broader family Characidae and with other members of the genus, open-water egg-scattering is the expected reproductive mode, with males pursuing females and fertilising eggs as they are released over fine-leaved vegetation or substrate without subsequent parental involvement.

One hobbyist database (Aquaryus) attributes nest-guarding behaviour to the species, which would be unusual for a small characid and is not corroborated by primary sources. Until that claim is verified by aquarists working with confirmed specimens, it is best treated as uncertain. Seasonal conditioning — warmer temperatures, increased live food, and slightly acidic soft water — is likely to promote reproductive readiness as in related taxa.

Breeding

No detailed captive breeding account for Phenacogaster megalostictus has been traced in the available literature or cache. Based on the biology of the genus and family, the standard small-characid approach is the reasonable starting point: a well-planted or mop-fitted breeding vessel with soft, slightly acidic water in the 75–81 °F range, a conditioned group or pair, and removal of adults after spawning to prevent egg predation.

Eggs are expected to be small, non-adhesive or weakly adhesive, and to hatch within 24–48 hours at typical tropical temperatures, with fry becoming free-swimming a few days later. First foods of infusoria or commercial liquid fry food, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii, should support early growth. Data on clutch size and development time for this species specifically remain sparse.

In the aquarium

Phenacogaster megalostictus is an infrequently traded species not commonly encountered in the hobby, though it may appear in shipments of mixed Rio Negro tetras or as bycatch in wild-caught Guiana Shield collections. Its small size and schooling nature make it compatible with the standard soft-water blackwater community: kept in a group of six or more with peaceful tankmates of similar size, it should be undemanding.

Water conditions should lean toward the soft, acidic end of its documented range — pH 6.0–7.0, low conductivity, temperature 75–81 °F — which also reflects the conditions under which most wild-caught Guiana Shield fish are healthiest in captivity. A dimly lit, tannin-conditioned tank with dark substrate and driftwood will reduce stress and bring out the natural translucent coloration. Little captive-care documentation exists specifically for this species, so aquarists keeping it would do the hobby a service by publishing observations on behaviour, feeding, and reproduction.

Conservation

Phenacogaster megalostictus was assessed as Least Concern (LC) by the IUCN in 2022, reflecting its occurrence across two sizeable drainage systems — the Rio Negro and the Essequibo — and the absence of evidence for significant population decline or major threats specific to the species.

The Rio Negro and Essequibo drainages remain among the less-impacted large river systems of South America, though deforestation pressures in the broader Amazon basin and climate-driven changes to river hydrology represent long-term concerns for the entire fauna. For a small, widespread characid with no known specialist habitat requirements, the current Least Concern status appears well supported by available data.
