Phenacogaster napoatilis is a small characid endemic to the Napo River drainage of Ecuador, described in 2010 from specimens collected near the town of Coca in the upper Amazon basin. Like its congeners it is a slender, large-eyed schooling fish adapted to swift, clear Andean-foothill streams, distinguished from related Phenacogaster species by an incomplete lateral line and details of fin-ray and scale counts. The genus is absent from most aquarium trade lists and virtually unknown outside specialist ichthyological literature, yet the Napo drainage that hosts it ranks among the most biodiverse freshwater systems on Earth.

Taxonomy & naming

Phenacogaster napoatilis was described by Carlos A. Lucena and Luiz R. Malabarba in 2010, published in Zoologia (volume 27, number 2, page 266) in a revision of the genus Phenacogaster. The type locality is the Rio Napo and its tributaries near Coca (approximately 0°28′S 76°56′W), Province of Orellana, Ecuador, in the upper Amazon basin. The holotype measures 1.5 in standard length; paratypes range from 1–2 in. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) confirms the valid name as Phenacogaster napoatilis Lucena & Malabarba, 2010, placed in the family Characidae.

The genus Phenacogaster belongs to the subfamily Characinae and comprises roughly two dozen species distributed across the Amazon, Orinoco, and Paraná–Paraguay basins. Members are distinguished from the superficially similar small tetras by the combination of an incomplete lateral line and a relatively large eye. P. napoatilis is set apart from congeners by its own suite of meristic characters detailed in the original description; the epithet napoatilis is a Latin compound meaning 'of the Napo', referring directly to the river from which the type series was drawn.

Morphology

Phenacogaster napoatilis is a small, slender characid reaching roughly 1.5–2 in standard length based on the type series. Like other members of the genus it has a notably large eye relative to head length — an adaptation common in small fish occupying swift, clear waters where visual predator detection matters — and a moderately compressed, elongate body typical of stream-dwelling characids.

The incomplete lateral line is the defining diagnostic character that separates Phenacogaster from many similar-looking small tetras: only a portion of the flank scales are perforated, rather than a full series running to the caudal peduncle. Coloration in preserved specimens follows the genus norm of a pale silvery or yellowish body with a dark lateral stripe extending from behind the head toward the caudal fin base, and a dusky caudal spot. Fresh coloration is not described in available literature for this species, but congeners such as P. tegatus display a translucent, silverish body with a reflective lateral band in life.

Habitat

The species is known from the Rio Napo drainage near Coca in Orellana Province, Ecuador, in the upper to middle reaches of the western Amazon basin. The Napo is a major left-bank tributary of the Amazon rising on the eastern slopes of the Ecuadorian Andes, flowing through heavily forested lowland terrain before crossing into Peru. The elevation near the type locality is modest — Coca sits at roughly 820 ft above sea level — placing the species in the transitional zone between Andean foothill streams and lowland Amazonian rainforest.

Field notes from the original description indicate the collection sites featured swift currents over sand and rock substrates in clear to transparent water. By analogy with other Phenacogaster species studied in the Neotropical literature, P. napoatilis likely inhabits shallow runs and riffles of moderate to fast-flowing streams rather than sluggish blackwater channels. Water chemistry in such Andean-derived streams is typically soft and acidic to near-neutral, with low conductivity and high dissolved oxygen from turbulent flow — conditions quite unlike the tannin-stained, slow-moving waters associated with Amazonian igapó.

Feeding

No published dietary data specific to Phenacogaster napoatilis are available in the accessible literature. Inference from the broader genus, particularly from aquarium observations of the congener P. tegatus documented by specialist sources, suggests a micropredatory ecology: in the wild these fish take tiny aquatic invertebrates, crustaceans, and insect larvae from the water column and substrate surface.

In captivity, congeners of similar size accept live and frozen Artemia nauplii, Moina, and grindal worms, and will take small dried foods once settled. The large eyes typical of the genus are consistent with a visually hunting, active forager rather than an ambush predator, and the swift-stream habitat implies fish that must actively pursue or intercept drifting invertebrates in moving water.

Mating

No specific breeding observations have been published for Phenacogaster napoatilis in the wild or in captivity. Based on the reproductive biology documented for the family Characidae and for Phenacogaster congeners, the species is almost certainly an egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care, releasing adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or over substrates during brief spawning bouts.

Male competition and courtship displays are typical of small characids in shoaling groups: males display alongside receptive females, with fin-flaring and lateral positioning. Because the species inhabits swift, oxygenated streams in the wild, spawning may be triggered in part by current, dissolved oxygen levels, and seasonal cues associated with the Andean wet season, though no field data confirm this for P. napoatilis specifically.

Breeding

Phenacogaster napoatilis has not been bred in captivity in any documented source. General characid husbandry principles apply by inference: a separate, densely planted breeding tank with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, soft to moderately soft acidic water, and a temperature in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius would replicate the species' inferred natural conditions and provide egg-attachment surfaces.

Eggs would be expected to be small and adhesive, hatching after several days at warm temperatures, with the adults offering no parental care and likely consuming eggs and fry if not removed. Rearing fry of similar-sized characids typically requires very fine first foods — infusoria or commercial liquid fry food — before progressing to newly hatched Artemia nauplii. Until aquarium husbandry records for this species are published, these remain extrapolations from the wider family.

In the aquarium

Phenacogaster napoatilis does not appear in the commercial aquarium trade and is essentially unknown to hobbyists. No dedicated care literature exists. Were it to become available, the baseline approach for small soft-water, swift-stream Neotropical characids would apply: a well-oxygenated, lightly planted tank with gentle to moderate current, soft acidic to near-neutral water (pH 6.0–7.2, low hardness), temperatures around 72–79 °F, and a shoal of at least six to eight individuals to promote natural behaviour and reduce individual stress.

By analogy with P. tegatus, which is occasionally kept by specialist hobbyists, the species would likely accept a dim tank with a dark substrate that shows off the large eyes and lateral stripe. Small tank companions from similar biotopes — other small Neotropical tetras, pencilfish, or pygmy corydoras — would be appropriate. The species' swift-stream origins suggest good dissolved oxygen levels are more important than for typical lowland Amazonian tetras.

Conservation

Phenacogaster napoatilis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). No dedicated conservation assessment is available. The species' known range is restricted to the Rio Napo drainage near Coca, Ecuador, making it potentially vulnerable to the pressures that affect Amazonian ichthyofauna more broadly: deforestation and agricultural runoff in the Napo watershed, hydrocarbon extraction (the Coca and Orellana region sits within Ecuador's main oil-production zone), and sedimentation from road construction and land clearance.

The upper Napo basin is part of a globally significant freshwater biodiversity hotspot, and Ecuador has established protected areas in the broader region including the Yasuní National Park and Sumaco Napo-Galeras National Park. Whether P. napoatilis occurs within any protected catchment is not confirmed in available literature. Its restricted type locality and absence from trade mean that any targeted conservation effort would need to begin with surveys to establish the true extent of its range.
