Phenacogaster prolata is a small characid tetra reaching around 2 in standard length, described in 2010 from Venezuela as one of nine new Phenacogaster species recognised in a major revision of the genus. It inhabits the upper and middle Negro River, the canal Casiquiare, and portions of the Orinoco drainage — a broad Amazonian-Orinocan transition zone that includes some of the most celebrated blackwater rivers in South America. The species name refers to its distinctively elongated maxillary bone, a character that sets it apart from its congeners. Like most Phenacogaster it remains essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby, where the genus as a whole is rarely traded.

Taxonomy & naming

Phenacogaster prolata was described by Carlos Alberto Santos de Lucena and Roberto E. Malabarba in 2010 as one of nine new Phenacogaster species presented together in a single publication in the journal Zoologia (volume 27, number 2, pages 263–304). The type locality encompasses the Orinoco River, the canal Casiquiare, and the upper and middle Negro River, a stretch that spans one of the most biogeographically significant natural waterways in the Neotropics — the Casiquiare canal linking the Orinoco and Amazon basins.

The genus Phenacogaster belongs to the family Characidae and encompasses small, slender characins broadly distributed across South American river systems. The genus name combines the Greek phénax, meaning cheat or imposter, with gastḗr, belly — a reference to a perceived deceptive appearance. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name; Phenacogaster prolata Lucena & Malabarba, 2010 is recorded without parenthetical authority, the species having been described in Phenacogaster where it remains.

Morphology

Phenacogaster prolata reaches a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 2 in. The specific epithet prolata is Latin for extended or elongated, applied by the original describers to the species' relatively large and extended maxillary bone — a character used diagnostically to separate it from its congeners in the 2010 revision.

Like other Phenacogaster, this species is small, slender, and laterally compressed, with the general body plan characteristic of small characids from lowland South American rivers. Detailed published descriptions of colouration and fin morphology beyond the diagnostic maxillary character are sparse in accessible hobbyist literature, reflecting how recently the species was named and how rarely it is encountered outside specialist ichthyological collections.

Habitat

Phenacogaster prolata is recorded from Venezuela, specifically from the Orinoco River drainage, the canal Casiquiare, and the upper and middle Negro River. The Casiquiare is a natural river canal connecting the upper Orinoco to the Rio Negro — one of the largest tributaries of the Amazon — making the type locality straddle both major drainage systems.

FishBase lists the species as a freshwater pelagic fish, suggesting it occupies open water rather than heavily vegetated or benthic microhabitats. The Negro River is one of the world's great blackwater rivers, characterised by tea-coloured, acidic, ion-poor water derived from the leaching of organic matter through surrounding forest soils. The Orinoco and Casiquiare headwaters share some of these characteristics. A species at home in both systems would likely tolerate a broad range of water chemistry, though specific field measurements for this species are not well documented in the available literature.

Feeding

No dedicated feeding studies for Phenacogaster prolata are available in the accessible literature. Inferences from its ecology and the broader feeding biology of the genus suggest it is an opportunistic micropredator or omnivore in the mould of most small characids, likely taking small aquatic invertebrates, zooplankton, and possibly terrestrial insects that fall to the water surface.

Based on the biology of related small characids, the species is expected to be an open egg-scatterer with no parental care — the most common reproductive strategy in the family Characidae. Males likely pursue females through the water column, and spawning would typically occur over fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or among leaf litter and root tangles in the wild.

Fine-leaved plants and spawning mops would serve as egg deposition sites in captivity. No information on courtship displays, spawning triggers, or sex-specific behaviour has been recorded for this species in the available literature, and aquarium observations are essentially absent given how rarely Phenacogaster species enter the hobby.

Breeding

Captive breeding records for Phenacogaster prolata are not documented in the accessible literature. Applying the general biology of small characids, eggs would be adhesive or semi-adhesive, scattered among fine-leaved vegetation or onto substrate, and left without parental attention. Adults would be expected to consume eggs if not separated after spawning.

Incubation and fry-rearing parameters remain undescribed for this species. Aquarists working with small, rare characids from Amazonian blackwater habitats often condition breeders in soft, slightly acidic water at temperatures in the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius, and raise fry on infusoria or rotifers before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp. Whether such conditions would suit P. prolata specifically is untested; data on this species in aquarium settings are essentially absent.

In the aquarium

Phenacogaster prolata is not an established aquarium fish. The genus Phenacogaster as a whole is rarely imported or kept outside specialist collections, and P. prolata — described only in 2010 and occupying a remote Amazonian-Orinocan transition zone — has not been reported in the hobby trade. No dedicated care guides exist for this species.

If obtained, the species would likely suit a small, well-planted aquarium with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water reflecting its blackwater origins, kept with comparably sized, peaceful tankmates. A temperature range in the mid-20s Celsius would be a reasonable starting point. The fish's small size (2 in SL) and likely peaceful temperament make it suitable for nano or community setups in principle, though captive husbandry would rely largely on extrapolation from related species rather than established practice. Anyone encountering this species should prioritise documenting and sharing their observations, as published aquarium data are genuinely lacking.

Conservation

Phenacogaster prolata is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment conducted on 16 November 2020. The species' distribution spans portions of the Orinoco River, canal Casiquiare, and upper and middle Negro River in Venezuela — a relatively wide range that likely underpins the low-risk assessment, as wide-ranging South American riverine species with no known concentrated threats typically qualify for Least Concern.

The Orinoco–Negro–Casiquiare system is one of the most biodiverse freshwater regions on Earth, and much of the habitat within the type locality region retains substantial forest cover. While the broader region faces pressures from deforestation, gold mining, and hydroelectric development, no specific threats to this species have been identified in the literature. The assessment will next come up for review according to standard IUCN cycles; monitoring of the blackwater systems it inhabits is important given ongoing land-use pressure in Amazonian Venezuela.
