Phenacogaster simulata is a small, slender characid from the upper Potaro River of Guyana, reaching roughly 1.5 in standard length in the wild. Described in 2010 from specimens collected at Tukett Falls on the Rio Potaro in the Potaro-Siparuni region, it belongs to a genus of quiet, schooling tetras that occupy the pelagic midwater of clear Neotropical streams and rivers. Its name acknowledges a strong resemblance to its congener Phenacogaster megalostictus, and males carry tiny bony hooks on the anal-fin rays — a widespread trait among Phenacogaster that speaks to the physical nature of courtship in this group.

Taxonomy & naming

Phenacogaster simulata was described by Carlos A. S. de Lucena and Luiz R. Malabarba in a 2010 revision of the genus Phenacogaster published in Zoologia (volume 27, issue 2). The type locality is Tukett Falls on the Rio Potaro, near Mahdia in the Potaro-Siparuni region of Guyana (5°12'18"N, 59°26'55"W). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (California Academy of Sciences) confirms the authority as Lucena & Malabarba, 2010, and records the species as a valid member of the family Characidae endemic to the Potaro River system of the Essequibo drainage.

The original publication used the form P. simulatus, but the name was subsequently gender-corrected to P. simulata to agree with the feminine gender of Phenacogaster, in keeping with the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. The genus Phenacogaster Eigenmann, 1907 is placed within the large subfamily Stevardiinae (sometimes treated as a tribe within Characidae), which encompasses numerous small schooling tetras of the Neotropics. Phenacogaster is characterised by an elongate, laterally compressed body, a complete lateral line, and the near-universal presence of anal-fin hooks in males.

Morphology

Phenacogaster simulata is a small, streamlined characid. Specimens in the original description range from 1–1.5 in standard length (SL), and FishBase records a maximum of approximately 1.5 in SL — placing it among the smaller members of the genus. The body is elongate, moderately compressed laterally, and relatively low-profiled compared with some of its congeners, a character noted in the original description.

Colouration in preserved material and in the aquarium is a translucent silvery-grey with a diffuse dusky lateral stripe that darkens toward the caudal peduncle; a dark spot or blotch is typically present at the base of the caudal fin. The adipose fin is present and unpigmented to faintly dusky. As in virtually all Phenacogaster, sexually mature males bear small bony hooks (spines derived from modified fin rays) on the ventral surfaces of the posterior anal-fin rays. These hooks are detectable under magnification and serve as the most reliable means of sexing the species outside of the breeding season. Females in ripe condition are noticeably deeper-bellied.

Habitat

The type locality, Tukett Falls on the Rio Potaro, lies in the highland interior of Guyana within the Potaro-Siparuni administrative region. The Potaro is a major left-bank tributary of the Essequibo River and drains the Pakaraima Mountains, including the plateau that supports Kaieteur Falls. Waters in this system are typically cool relative to lowland Amazonian streams, clear, and low in dissolved minerals — conditions typical of Guiana Shield drainages over ancient crystalline rock.

FishBase classifies P. simulata as a freshwater pelagic species, consistent with the general ecology of Phenacogaster, which tends to school in open midwater of rivers, streams, and their margins rather than hugging the substrate. At Tukett Falls, the species was taken in association with the moderate to fast-moving, well-oxygenated water characteristic of upper-drainage falls zones. Precise water-chemistry data for the type locality are not available from the literature, but Guiana Shield streams of this type are generally soft, slightly acidic, and cool.

Feeding

Detailed dietary studies of Phenacogaster simulata have not been published. By analogy with other members of the genus and with small pelagic characids of the Essequibo system more broadly, the species is presumed to be an opportunistic micro-carnivore, taking small invertebrates — insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, and zooplankton — from the water column and surface film.

In the aquarium, Phenacogaster species in general accept small prepared foods, including fine-grade flake and micro-pellets, as well as frozen and live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii, and Cyclops. A diet weighted toward small live and frozen prey items is likely to maintain condition and encourage natural colour expression in this and related species.

Mating

No published behavioural observations of mating in P. simulata are available. The presence of anal-fin hooks in males is the principal morphological indicator of the reproductive biology: in characids generally, and Phenacogaster in particular, these hooks are thought to engage the female's fins during spawning, holding the pair together momentarily as eggs and sperm are released. The hooks cause no lasting harm and are an adaptation to egg-scattering open-water spawning rather than any form of prolonged pair bond.

By comparison with other small egg-scattering characids from Guiana Shield streams, spawning in the wild is likely triggered by seasonal changes in water level, temperature, and current associated with the rainy season. Males are presumed to engage in brief courtship chases, and spawning probably occurs in open water or among fine-leaved riparian vegetation. No parental care is expected.

Breeding

Phenacogaster simulata has not been reported as bred in captivity in the available literature. It remains a rarely encountered species in the hobby, and no husbandry records detailing spawning, egg development, or fry-rearing have been published for this species specifically.

For hobbyists who do obtain specimens, the likely approach for other small Phenacogaster applies: condition adults on varied live and frozen foods, provide soft, slightly acidic, warm water mimicking Guiana Shield conditions, and offer fine-leaved plants or spawning mops as spawning media. Eggs will almost certainly be non-adhesive or weakly adhesive and scattered freely; the adults are expected to show no care and will consume eggs given the opportunity. Fry would be tiny at hatching and require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food as a first food.

In the aquarium

Phenacogaster simulata is an extreme rarity in the aquarium trade and is not commercially available at the time of writing. When and if specimens do enter the hobby — as occasional wild-caught imports from Guyana — they would be best kept in a well-filtered, dimly lit tank with soft, slightly acidic water reflecting the Guiana Shield environment: temperatures in the range of roughly 72–79 °F, pH 5.5–7.0, and low hardness. The tank should be covered, as small pelagic characids are prone to jumping.

As a schooling midwater fish, P. simulata would be expected to do best in a group of six or more individuals, kept with similarly sized, peaceful tankmates. The species is small enough that it would be vulnerable to larger or more boisterous fish. A planted aquarium with open central swimming space, some surface cover of floating plants to diffuse light, and a gentle current would approximate natural conditions. Given the scarcity of specimens and the lack of published captive-husbandry experience, any keeper fortunate enough to obtain this fish would be doing the hobby a service by documenting its care and breeding behaviour in detail.

Conservation

Phenacogaster simulata has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List as of 2026; it carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). The species is known only from the type locality at Tukett Falls on the Rio Potaro in Guyana's Potaro-Siparuni region, a drainage that flows through relatively undisturbed Guiana Shield highland.

The Potaro River system is not under immediate large-scale industrial threat, and much of its catchment lies within or adjacent to the Kaieteur National Park, which affords some habitat protection. However, the extremely restricted known range of P. simulata — a single locality in a single river drainage — means that any future habitat disturbance, pollution event, or hydrological change in the upper Potaro could affect the entire known population. Targeted collection surveys would be needed to determine whether the species occurs more broadly in the Potaro-Essequibo system or is genuinely confined to the Tukett Falls locality.
