Labeobarbus nzadimalawu is a large African barb described in 2018 from the Inkski River of the Lower Congo basin, Democratic Republic of Congo. Known from a single river system, this recently described species is distinguished within its genus by the combination of a free mental lobe, two pairs of well-developed barbels, and fleshy lips — a suite of morphological traits that set it apart from its closest relative, Labeobarbus nzadinkski, which lacks barbels. Its name, drawn from the Kikongo word for the river that brings good luck, reflects the cultural resonance of the waterway it inhabits. As an endemic of a geographically restricted tributary of one of Africa's great river systems, it remains among the least-studied members of a large and taxonomically complex genus.

Taxonomy & naming

Labeobarbus nzadimalawu was formally described in 2018 by Vreven, Musschoot, Decru, Wamuini Lunkayilakio, Obiero, Cerwenka, and Schliewen. The description was part of a broader revision of mouth-polymorphic Labeobarbus from the Inkski River in the Lower Congo basin, Democratic Republic of Congo. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid name; the species has not previously appeared under any other genus combination.

The species belongs to what researchers call the Inkski complex — a cluster of morphologically closely related Labeobarbus species in the Lower Congo drainage distinguished primarily by oral structures. Its sister species within this complex is Labeobarbus nzadinkski, from which it differs by possessing two pairs of well-developed barbels (L. nzadinkski lacks barbels entirely), as well as by measurable differences in mouth width relative to head length. The genus Labeobarbus itself is a large, pan-African assemblage of large barbs and yellowfish that has undergone extensive taxonomic revision; the species formerly housed in the old catch-all genus Barbus across Africa are now distributed among several genera, with Labeobarbus anchoring the large-bodied African lineage.

Morphology

Labeobarbus nzadimalawu is characterised by a free mental lobe — a fleshy projection on the underside of the lower jaw — in combination with two pairs of well-developed barbels and prominent fleshy lips. These oral features are diagnostic within its species complex and reflect the genus's tendency toward specialised bottom-feeding oral structures.

Published morphometric data from the original description include a mouth width of 16.1–26.5% of head length, head length of 23.0–26.4% of standard length, dorsal-fin base length of 12.1–16.0% of standard length, and prepectoral distance of 22.6–26.0% of standard length. Like most large African Labeobarbus, it is presumed to have a moderately elongate, fusiform body suited to riverine life, though detailed colouration data from wild specimens are not widely recorded in available sources. Maximum body size has not been established from published data.

Habitat

Labeobarbus nzadimalawu is endemic to the Inkski River basin, a tributary system of the Lower Congo River in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Lower Congo is among the world's most biodiverse river systems and is known for exceptionally high rates of fish endemism driven by its powerful rapids, fragmented habitat, and ancient geological history.

Specific physicochemical data for the Inkski River at the collection localities of this species are not yet published in accessible form. At a genus level, Labeobarbus species in the Congo and its tributaries tend to occur in flowing, relatively clear riverine environments with sandy or rocky substrates, often in deeper channels with reduced current or along vegetated margins. No precise temperature, pH, or conductivity figures are available for this species in published sources.

Feeding

No published dietary data specific to Labeobarbus nzadimalawu exist in the accessible literature. The species' oral morphology — fleshy lips, a free mental lobe, and paired barbels — is consistent with a benthic feeding strategy. Across the genus, Labeobarbus are broadly omnivorous, processing algae, detritus, invertebrates, and plant material scraped or sifted from the substrate.

The barbels and developed lips of this species suggest a degree of specialisation toward probing soft substrate or browsing epilithic material, though whether it occupies a distinct trophic niche relative to its barbel-lacking sister species L. nzadinkski is unknown. Foraging in large African river barbs generally takes place along the bottom and lower water column, often in loose aggregations.

Mating

No observations of courtship or spawning behaviour have been published for Labeobarbus nzadimalawu. Like all barbs, it is expected to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Large riverine Labeobarbus are typically seasonal broadcast spawners, with reproduction tied to water temperature and river level changes associated with the rainy season.

In comparable large African barbs, males pursue gravid females through open water or over gravel runs, releasing eggs and milt together with no lasting pair bond. No territory is held, no nest is constructed, and the act of spawning is brief and repeated with multiple partners in a group. There is no parental behaviour.

Breeding

Labeobarbus nzadimalawu is not known to have been maintained or bred in captivity. Large Labeobarbus from African rivers are generally challenging to breed outside their native habitats, often requiring the seasonal hydrological cues — rising water levels, associated temperature shifts, and migratory movements — that trigger spawning in the wild.

Like other members of the genus, this species is presumed to scatter adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs over gravel or rocky substrate in flowing water. Eggs and larvae receive no parental care, and adults do not return to spawn sites after the event. Captive breeding data are absent from the published record.

In the aquarium

Labeobarbus nzadimalawu has not been recorded in the aquarium trade and is not currently available to hobbyists. Its restricted range in a single river basin in the Lower Congo, combined with its recent description in 2018, means it remains essentially unknown outside specialist ichthyological circles.

As a large African river barb from a highly biodiverse and often rapids-associated system, it would likely require a very large aquarium with strong filtration, high oxygen levels, and a riverine flow pattern if ever maintained in captivity. The combination of its Congo endemism, uncertain population status, and absence from the trade means it is unlikely to appear in the hobby in the near future.

Conservation

Labeobarbus nzadimalawu has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; as a species described only in 2018, it has not yet been evaluated. Its conservation status is therefore Not Evaluated (NE). Given its apparent restriction to the Inkski River basin in the Lower Congo system, it qualifies as a range-restricted endemic, a category generally considered higher risk.

The Lower Congo basin faces a range of anthropogenic pressures, including artisanal mining, deforestation in catchments, and increasing hydroelectric development that threatens river connectivity and flow regimes. The extraordinary endemism of the Congo system — built on millions of years of habitat specialisation — makes its constituent species particularly vulnerable to any large-scale modification of the river system. Formal population surveys and a Red List assessment for this species are needed to determine its current status.
