Pyrrhulina zigzag is a small, slender characiform of the upper Amazon basin in Peru, distinguished by the broad, nearly black zigzag band that runs the length of its flanks and that gave the species its name. Despite circulating in the aquarium hobby for more than half a century before being formally named, it was not scientifically described until 1997 — a reminder of how many lebiasinid species passed through the trade for decades under informal labels. It remains one of the more attractively marked members of a genus otherwise known for subtle coloration.

Taxonomy & naming

Pyrrhulina zigzag was formally described by Zarski and Géry in 1997, in Das Aquarium 31(6) Nr 336: 12–17. The type locality is Peru, and the holotype is catalogued as MTD F 17705. The species belongs to the family Lebiasinidae and the order Characiformes. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) is the authority for the valid name, Pyrrhulina zigzag Zarski & Géry, 1997.

What makes this species remarkable from a nomenclatural standpoint is its history in the aquarium hobby: it was kept and traded for well over fifty years before receiving a formal description. Hobbyists encountered it under informal names, but no one published a scientific account until the 1990s. The eventual description formalised what aquarists had long recognised as a distinct entity.

The genus Pyrrhulina belongs to the subfamily Pyrrhulininae within Lebiasinidae and encompasses small to medium-sized surface-oriented characiforms found widely across tropical South America. The generic name derives from Greek roots alluding to a reddish or flame-coloured appearance — a feature expressed to varying degrees across the genus.

Morphology

Pyrrhulina zigzag is a small fish, with males recorded at approximately 1 in standard length and females slightly smaller at around 1 in SL; FishBase records a maximum size of 1.5 in SL. The body is elongate and slender, typical of the genus, with a slightly flattened dorsal profile and an upturned mouth well suited to surface feeding.

The defining morphological feature is the broad, nearly black zigzag or irregular lateral band that extends along the midline of the flank. This band, which gives the species its name, is more prominent and bold than the lateral markings seen in many congeners, making it relatively easy to identify among the Pyrrhulina species likely to appear in the trade. Background coloration is silvery to pale brownish, with the intense dark banding providing high contrast.

Sexual dimorphism is moderate and consistent with patterns seen elsewhere in the genus: males tend to be slightly larger and may show more intense coloration when in breeding condition, while females are rounder-bellied when gravid. Neither sex develops elaborate fin extensions or bright auxiliary coloration.

Habitat

Pyrrhulina zigzag is native to the upper Amazon River basin in Peru. FishBase characterises it as a freshwater, benthopelagic species occurring in tropical waters. The upper Amazon headwater systems in Peru encompass a range of habitats from clearwater tributaries draining Andean foothills to blackwater and whitewater channels across the lowland rainforest, and most Pyrrhulina species prefer slow-moving or standing water with abundant marginal and surface vegetation.

As a surface-oriented lebiasinid, the species likely occupies the upper water column near overhanging vegetation, leaf litter, and floating plants — microhabitats that provide both cover from aerial predators and a steady supply of invertebrate prey. Specific water-chemistry data for wild populations are not captured in the available sources, but the broader Pyrrhulina genus typically inhabits soft, acidic to near-neutral, warm tropical water consistent with Amazonian lowland conditions.

Feeding

Like other members of the genus, Pyrrhulina zigzag is primarily an insectivore and surface feeder in the wild. The upturned mouth is well adapted for taking small invertebrates — insects, insect larvae, and other small arthropods — from the water surface and just beneath it. Lebiasinids are generally opportunistic predators at this scale, also consuming small aquatic invertebrates as available.

In the aquarium, Pyrrhulina species are not demanding feeders. They accept live and frozen small invertebrates readily — Daphnia, brine shrimp, micro-worms, and similar items — and will typically take quality small-sized dry foods as well. Floating or slow-sinking foods are preferred over bottom-delivered offerings, given the species' surface orientation. Regular live or frozen food improves colour and breeding condition.

Mating

Formal data on the mating behaviour of Pyrrhulina zigzag are limited, and FishBase lists breeding behaviour as unknown. Based on well-documented patterns in closely related Pyrrhulina species, courtship in the genus typically involves the male displaying to the female with fin spreading and lateral posturing. Males often take on a guarding role around a chosen spawning substrate.

Pyrrhulina species differ from many other characiforms in that they are not simple egg-scatterers: they tend to deposit adhesive eggs on a firm substrate — commonly a broad leaf, a flat stone, or submerged wood — that the male then guards. Whether P. zigzag follows this pattern precisely has not been confirmed in the available literature, but the genus-level biology is consistent across most species studied.

Breeding

Breeding behaviour for Pyrrhulina zigzag specifically has not been formally documented in the sources available, and FishBase records it as unknown. Based on the genus as a whole, Pyrrhulina are substrate-depositing spawners: eggs are laid on a cleaned flat surface such as a broad leaf and typically guarded by the male until hatching. In related Pyrrhulina species that have been bred in captivity, the male often fans the eggs and defends the spawning site vigorously, and the fry are free-swimming within a few days of hatching at tropical temperatures. First foods for the fry are very small live items — infusoria and rotifers initially, then newly hatched brine shrimp. Conditioning pairs on live food prior to spawning and providing a suitable flat spawning surface in a dedicated breeding tank improves success rates.

In the aquarium

Pyrrhulina zigzag is an infrequently seen but rewarding aquarium subject for hobbyists interested in smaller, characterful South American fishes. Its surface-orientation, bold lateral banding, and active behaviour make it more visually engaging than its modest size might suggest. A species or biotope tank with soft, slightly acidic water, dim lighting, floating plants, and surface cover suits it well and brings out natural behaviour.

The species is best kept in a small group; Pyrrhulina are not strongly schooling but benefit from conspecific company. Tankmates should be chosen carefully — small, peaceful species that occupy the lower water column and will not outcompete the Pyrrhulina at the surface are ideal. Larger or more aggressive fish should be avoided. The aquarium should be well covered, as surface-oriented lebiasinids are capable jumpers.

Water conditions should reflect the soft, warm, Amazonian origin of the species: temperatures in the mid to upper 20s Celsius, pH slightly acidic to neutral, and low to moderate hardness. Feeding is straightforward with a mix of small live or frozen invertebrates and quality dry foods. Given its scarcity in the trade, captive-bred stock should be sought where available.

Conservation

Pyrrhulina zigzag is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment carried out in September 2020. The upper Amazon basin supports extensive intact freshwater habitat across much of its range, and there is no evidence of major population-level decline in this species.

Its obscurity in the trade — despite a long history of occasional appearances — means that commercial collection pressure has likely been minimal. The primary long-term threat to Amazonian fishes broadly is habitat loss and degradation from agriculture, deforestation, and waterway modification in the basin. As with most small, range-restricted Amazonian species, the actual distribution and population status of P. zigzag are poorly known, and the LC assessment reflects limited available data rather than a comprehensive survey.
