Roeboides ilseae is a small, lightly built characid from Central America, reaching about 3 in, that belongs to a genus best known for an extraordinary feeding speciality: scale-eating, or lepidophagy. Described by William Bussing in 1986, the species is one of several close relatives found in Pacific-slope and trans-isthmian drainages of Costa Rica and Panama.
