Taxonomy & naming
Roeboides sazimai was described by Carlos Alberto Santos de Lucena in 2007 in a taxonomic revision of the Roeboides microlepis group published in Iheringia, Série Zoológica (vol. 93, no. 3, pp. 283–308). The type locality is the rio Pindaré in Maranhão State, northeastern Brazil, and the holotype — catalogued as MCP 38542, standard length 2.5 in — is held in the ichthyological collection of the Museu de Ciências e Tecnologia in Porto Alegre. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) treats Roeboides sazimai Lucena, 2007 as the valid name.
The genus Roeboides belongs to the family Characidae and is the primary genus of scale-eating characins in South America. The microlepis group, to which R. sazimai belongs, was redefined in Lucena's 2007 revision based on shared derived characters of jaw and scale morphology that support its monophyly. The species epithet sazimai is a patronym, though the precise honoree is not detailed in the available cache data.
Morphology
Roeboides sazimai reaches a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 3.5 in, a figure consistent with the holotype SL of 2.5 in indicating a modest-sized fish within its genus. Like other Roeboides, it is a laterally compressed, somewhat deep-bodied characid with the enlarged, underslung jaw and protruding teeth characteristic of lepidophagous species — adaptations that allow the fish to rake scales from the flanks of prey without necessarily capturing the whole fish.
Detailed meristic and morphometric data beyond what is recoverable from the type description are not currently available in published secondary sources. The general body plan is typical of the genus: a silvery, moderately elongate to somewhat ovoid profile, large eyes, and the slightly oblique jaw that is the genus's functional hallmark. Sexual dimorphism in the species has not been documented in accessible literature.
Habitat
Roeboides sazimai is endemic to two river drainages of northeastern Brazil: the Parnaíba and the Pindaré-Mearim, both in Maranhão State. These rivers flow through the Caatinga biome, a semi-arid ecoregion with strongly seasonal rainfall, mean annual temperatures of 77–86 °F, and periodic drought. Within this landscape the species occupies bays and backwaters of rivers and streams — low-flow or still marginal habitats where prey fish concentrate and where the cover of riparian vegetation or submerged structure offers ambush opportunities consistent with scale-eating behaviour.
The Caatinga drainages of Maranhão are distinct from the Amazonian hydrological system and support a largely endemic ichthyofauna. The Pindaré River is a left-bank tributary of the Mearim, ultimately draining to the Atlantic via the Baía de São Marcos. The Parnaíba, by contrast, has its own independent Atlantic drainage. The isolation of these two basins from each other and from the broader Amazonian network explains a pattern of endemism that makes northeastern Brazil a significant but undersampled centre of characid diversity.
Feeding
Roeboides sazimai is a lepidophage — a scale eater — belonging to a genus in which this specialised feeding mode is well documented. Scale-eating in Roeboides involves an ontogenetic diet shift: juveniles feed more broadly on insects and small invertebrates, while adults shift toward the scales of other fishes as a primary food source. In R. sazimai specifically, the diet includes fish scales, insects, and plant material, the latter presumably taken opportunistically.
Lepidophagy in Roeboides is accomplished by a lateral strike against the flank of a prey fish, scraping a mouthful of scales without necessarily immobilising the target. This is a renewable prey resource — scales regrow — and scale-eaters in diverse fish lineages have independently evolved the jaw morphology and behaviour pattern seen in this genus. The implication for husbandry is that R. sazimai cannot be kept safely with smaller or more delicate tankmates.
Mating
Specific courtship behaviour in Roeboides sazimai has not been described in the literature accessible from the research cache. On the basis of the genus Roeboides and the broader tribe it belongs to within Characidae, the species is presumed to be an open egg-scatterer: females broadcast adhesive eggs over the substrate or fine-leaved vegetation without mate guarding or parental involvement. Breeding triggers likely include seasonal cues tied to the strongly seasonal hydrology of the Caatinga — rising water levels and associated changes in temperature and conductivity that accompany the wet season.
Courtship displays, if any, have not been documented in hobby or scientific literature for this species. As with most small characids, successful pairing probably involves brief parallel swimming and spawning rushes over vegetation, with no prolonged pair bond.
Breeding
No dedicated breeding reports for Roeboides sazimai in captivity have been located. Extrapolating from the genus and family, the species is expected to scatter small, adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over a substrate, with no parental care. Eggs and fry would be at risk of predation by the adults and should be separated in a breeding setup.
The wild seasonal context — a semi-arid river system with a pronounced dry and wet season — suggests that conditioning with varied live and frozen foods, followed by a simulated rainy season trigger (cooler, softer water addition or a rise in tank level), might induce spawning. Given the species' rarity in the trade, captive-breeding records remain essentially undocumented, and hobbyist accounts are absent from the current literature base.
In the aquarium
Roeboides sazimai is a rarity in the aquarium hobby and not commercially available through normal trade channels. Were specimens to become available, the husbandry notes for the genus Roeboides would apply: a spacious, well-filtered aquarium with good water quality, kept at temperatures reflecting its Caatinga origins (approximately 75–86 °F), and housing only similarly-sized or larger robust species — the fish's scale-eating habit makes it a threat to smaller tankmates.
A biotope-inspired setup with driftwood, leaf litter, and warm, slightly acidic to neutral water would suit the semi-arid river habitat. Given the feeding specialisation, supplementary live and frozen prey items (insects, small worms) are necessary; flake or pellet foods alone are unlikely to sustain adults in good condition. The species is of far greater interest as a study subject and a demonstration of extreme dietary specialisation than as a conventional community fish.
Conservation
Roeboides sazimai is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (2022 assessment). Although endemic to a geographically restricted area within the Brazilian Caatinga, the species' range spans two independent drainages — the Parnaíba and Pindaré-Mearim — which provides some buffer against localised decline. The Least Concern status implies that no immediate range-wide threat rising to the level of a threatened category was identified at the time of assessment.
Nonetheless, the Caatinga biome is one of the most threatened in Brazil and among the least protected. Ongoing pressures include deforestation for agriculture and livestock, dam construction and water extraction from rivers in the semi-arid zone, and the progressive deterioration of riparian zones. Species with restricted, seasonally variable habitats in this biome are inherently vulnerable to hydrological change, even where current assessments classify them as Least Concern. Continued monitoring of Caatinga fish assemblages is warranted.
