Serrapinnus notomelas was originally described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1915. The genus Serrapinnus was long treated as a synonym or subgenus within a broadly construed Characidae before being reinstated as a valid genus in its own right; Catalog of Fishes records the valid combination as Serrapinnus notomelas (Eigenmann, 1915), with the parenthetical authority indicating that the species was not described in Serrapinnus originally.
The genus Serrapinnus belongs to the large and heterogeneous family Characidae in the order Characiformes. Several small, externally similar characids share the common name 'tetra' in the trade, and Serrapinnus species are easily confused with close relatives. Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid name and combination used here.
Morphology
Serrapinnus notomelas is a small, slender-bodied characid reaching a maximum of 1.5 in standard length. Like most Serrapinnus, it has the compressed, somewhat elongated body plan typical of schooling open-water tetras, with the adipose fin present and a moderately forked tail. Coloration is generally silvery, often with a darker lateral stripe or midlateral marking that can vary in intensity with condition and light.
Sexual dimorphism is subtle at rest; females are typically deeper-bodied and fuller-bellied when in breeding condition, while males tend to be slightly slimmer. In schooling groups the fish move cohesively and any darker markings on the flanks can flash conspicuously as the school turns in the light.
Habitat
The primary distribution of Serrapinnus notomelas is the upper Paraná River basin of South America. Research from the Machado River basin in Rondônia, Brazil — a smaller adjacent drainage — records the species in small forest streams, suggesting it occupies a range of lotic habitats including shaded, vegetation-rich waterways as well as the larger river system.
Water temperatures recorded across its range span a broad seasonal range of 66–91 °F, reflecting the pronounced wet and dry seasons of central Brazil. The species therefore tolerates substantial temperature fluctuation over the year. Habitat features typically include fine-leaved aquatic macrophytes, algae-encrusted substrates, and soft to moderately hard water characteristic of interior South American drainages.
Feeding
Serrapinnus notomelas is classified as an omnivore with a trophic level of 2.2 (FishBase), indicating a feeding position close to primary production and consistent with a diet dominated by plant material and algae. Studies in the Machado River basin found aquatic macrophytes and algae accounting for approximately 54.94% of stomach contents in the rainy season, making this species more herbivorous in practice than many 'omnivore' tetras.
The fish forages actively in both dry and rainy seasons. In captivity it accepts a wide range of foods including flake and micro-pellets, but its natural herbivorous tendency means that vegetable-based foods, spirulina flake, and blanched greens make a worthwhile dietary supplement. Small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, Cyclops, and micro-worms are readily taken and help maintain conditioning.
Mating
Serrapinnus notomelas is an egg-scattering species that spawns in the open water or among fine-leaved vegetation with no parental pair bond and no territorial guarding of eggs. Males likely court females with fin displays and chasing behaviour typical of small characids, though detailed ethological studies are not documented in the available literature.
Reproduction is opportunistic and continuous rather than strictly seasonal: field data from the Machado River basin indicate that breeding occurs year-round with multiple clutches produced annually, an adaptaion to the variable hydrological conditions of its range. In the aquarium, a well-conditioned group in appropriate water conditions will spawn regularly without requiring elaborate seasonal cues.
Breeding
Like most small tetras, Serrapinnus notomelas scatters small, adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops and provides no parental care; adults will consume eggs and fry if not separated. Breeders typically condition a group together on varied live and frozen foods, then move spawning adults to a separate, densely planted tank — or add a spawning mop — and remove the adults after a spawning event.
Eggs hatch in a few days at tropical temperatures, and the tiny fry initially hang from plant leaves or the water surface before becoming free-swimming. First foods should be very small: infusoria, commercially prepared liquid fry food, or cultured rotifers, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp as the fry grow. Growth to juvenile size is reasonably quick, and the fish reach sexual maturity within a few months under good conditions.
In the aquarium
Serrapinnus notomelas is a lively, peaceful schooling tetra suited to community aquaria with other small, non-aggressive fishes. A group of at least six to eight individuals is recommended to allow natural schooling behaviour and reduce individual stress; larger groups of ten or more display more cohesive movement and appear more settled. Given its small maximum size of 1.5 in, it is well suited to moderately sized planted aquaria from around 23.5 in in length upward.
Water conditions should reflect its broad natural range: temperatures of roughly 72–82 °F, neutral to slightly acidic or moderately alkaline pH, and good water quality with gentle to moderate flow. A planted setup with open swimming space, dim to moderate lighting, and a dark substrate shows the fish's markings to best effect. The species' herbivorous tendencies mean that very fine-leaved or delicate plant species may be nibbled; hardy plants such as Java fern, Anubias, and stem plants generally fare better. Feeding should include a vegetable component alongside standard flake or micro-pellet fare.
Conservation
Serrapinnus notomelas is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment completed on 7 November 2018. The species' broad distribution across the upper Paraná River basin — one of South America's most extensive river systems — underpins this status, as no range-wide population decline has been documented sufficient to trigger a more precautionary listing.
The upper Paraná basin has nonetheless experienced substantial modification from agriculture, hydroelectric development, and deforestation over recent decades, which affects stream habitats throughout the region. Small forest-stream populations in areas like the Machado River basin may be more locally sensitive to habitat change than the overall LC assessment implies. The species does not appear in significant numbers in the ornamental trade compared with more popular tetras, so collection pressure is not a documented concern.
