Taxonomy & naming
Barbodes herrei was first described in 1934 by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler, who placed it in the genus Puntius — the broad holding genus that then accommodated virtually all small Asian barbs. It was one of several cyprinid species Fowler documented from Lake Lanao, a large, ancient lake on Mindanao that harboured a remarkable radiation of endemic fishes.
Following the landmark revision of Pethiyagoda et al. (2012), which demonstrated that the old Puntius was polyphyletic and formally split it into a number of new and resurrected genera, the species was transferred to Barbodes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) records the current valid combination as Barbodes herrei (Fowler, 1934), the parenthetical authority marking the move out of the original genus. The Lake Lanao cyprinids as a group present taxonomic challenges — some were described from very few specimens, and the loss of much of the type material compounds the difficulty of resolving species limits in what is now a mostly vanished fauna.
The species epithet herrei is an eponym honouring Dr. Albert William Christian Theodore Herre (1868–1962), an American ichthyologist, ecologist, botanist and lichenologist who made important contributions to the study of Philippine freshwater and marine fishes.
Morphology
Detailed morphological data for Barbodes herrei are sparse, consistent with the limited material on which the original description was based. FishBase records no maximum length data for the species, reflecting the scarcity of preserved specimens and the absence of recent field collections.
As a member of Barbodes — a genus of small to medium Asian barbs — it would have shared the general body plan of the group: a moderately deep, laterally compressed body with the pair of rostral barbels characteristic of the genus, and the typical cyprinid fin arrangement. Without reliable measurements in the literature, claims about specific size or colouration cannot be grounded here beyond what the original description records.
Habitat
Barbodes herrei was endemic to Lake Lanao, a large caldera lake situated at approximately 2297 ft elevation in Lanao Province, Mindanao Island, in the southern Philippines. Lake Lanao is one of the oldest and largest lakes in Southeast Asia and was historically home to a diverse radiation of endemic cyprinids found nowhere else on Earth.
The lake's benthopelagic barbs would have occupied the littoral and sublittoral zones, foraging over the substrate and among aquatic vegetation in warm, tropical freshwater. The lake sits at moderate elevation in a tropical island setting, with water temperatures characteristic of lowland to mid-elevation Philippine conditions. FishBase categorises the species as a tropical freshwater benthopelagic fish, consistent with the ecology of other Lake Lanao barbs.
Feeding
No specific feeding data for Barbodes herrei are recorded in the literature, a reflection of the species' extinction before modern ecological surveys could document its diet. By analogy with related barbs of the genus Barbodes and the broader Lake Lanao cyprinid assemblage, it likely foraged as an omnivore near the bottom, taking small invertebrates, algae, plant matter and organic detritus from the lake substrate and littoral zone.
The benthopelagic classification assigned by FishBase is consistent with a lifestyle of active foraging over and near the bottom rather than open-water pursuit feeding.
Mating
No reproductive observations for Barbodes herrei were recorded before its extinction. As a member of the barb family Cyprinidae, it would have been an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner — the universal reproductive strategy among barbs. Males pursue gravid females through vegetation or over the substrate, releasing eggs and milt together in a brief adhesive scatter event, after which neither parent guards or attends the eggs.
There is no nest, no bubble-nest, no mouthbrooding and no parental care in any barb, and nothing in the Lake Lanao fauna or the genus Barbodes suggests an exception. Spawning in lake-dwelling barbs in Southeast Asia is typically seasonal, tied to water temperature and rainfall cycles.
Breeding
Barbodes herrei was never bred in captivity and no breeding observations exist in the literature. The species went extinct before the aquarium hobby or conservation programmes could attempt ex-situ breeding. As with all barbs, reproduction would have involved the scattering of adhesive eggs over suitable substrate — plants, gravel or rocky lake margins — with eggs and larvae receiving no parental care and left to develop independently.
The loss of this species and the other Lake Lanao endemic barbs before any captive populations were established means that their precise reproductive biology, seasonal timing and fecundity are unknown.
In the aquarium
Barbodes herrei is extinct and has never been maintained in the aquarium trade. No captive population exists or has existed. The species is documented here as part of the historical and conservation record of the Lake Lanao endemic cyprinid fauna, not as a fish available to hobbyists.
Its loss, along with that of the other Lake Lanao barbs, represents one of the most complete freshwater fish extinctions recorded in Southeast Asia — an entire lake endemic radiation eliminated within a few decades.
Conservation
Barbodes herrei is assessed as Extinct (EX) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in 2020. The species has not been collected since its last confirmed record in a fish market in 1974, and repeated surveys of Lake Lanao conducted between 1975 and 2017 failed to find any specimens. Extinction is considered to have occurred between approximately 1963 and 1980.
The primary driver of extinction was the deliberate introduction of predatory and competing fishes into Lake Lanao. The goby Glossogobius giuris was introduced around 1963, followed by Giuris margaritacea (an eleotrid) between approximately 1975 and 1980. These invasive species rapidly altered the lake's ecology, preying on native fish and out-competing them for resources. Overfishing and habitat alteration compounded the pressure. An additional complicating factor has been the long-standing civil conflict in Lanao Province, which has limited the ability of researchers and conservation agencies to survey and protect the lake.
Barbodes herrei is part of a broader collapse: Lake Lanao once harboured at least 18 endemic cyprinid species, most of which are now extinct or critically endangered. The lake's story is cited internationally as a case study in the catastrophic consequences of introducing alien predators into isolated lake ecosystems with high endemism and no evolutionary defence against novel threats.
