Barbodes disa is an extinct freshwater cyprinid that was endemic to Lake Lanao on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines — one of approximately eighteen cyprinid species that evolved in isolation within that ancient, biodiversity-rich lake. Described by Albert Herre in 1932, the species was recorded commercially as recently as 1963–64 but had vanished from all subsequent surveys by the 1970s; it has not been reliably recorded since 1964. The IUCN assessed it as Extinct in 2020, tracing the loss to a cascade of human pressures: the introduction of invasive gobies that outcompeted or consumed the native cyprinids, destructive overfishing using dynamite, water extraction, logging across the watershed, and progressive pollution of the lake.

Taxonomy & naming

Barbodes disa was described by the American ichthyologist Albert William Herre in 1932 from Lake Lanao, Lanao Province, Mindanao, Philippines, the lake that served as the type locality. The original combination placed it in the genus Puntius, and the fish appears in much of the older Philippine fisheries literature as Puntius disa (Herre, 1932). Kottelat's 2013 revision of Southeast Asian cyprinid nomenclature — as recorded in the Catalog of Fishes — transferred it to Barbodes, which is the current valid genus. FishBase places it in the family Cyprinidae, subfamily Smiliogastrinae.

Lake Lanao is among the world's ancient lakes, estimated to be at least 10,000 years old and possibly considerably older, and it housed a remarkable radiation of endemic cyprinids — variously counted as fifteen to eighteen species at the time of early surveys. Barbodes disa was one of this flock, evolving in the isolation of the highland caldera lake. The genus Barbodes itself encompasses a number of Philippine and regional species; the Lake Lanao cyprinids were long treated collectively under Puntius before the post-2012 revisions disaggregated the old genus.

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum total length of 3.5 in for Barbodes disa. Beyond size, detailed morphological descriptions available in the primary literature are sparse in readily accessible secondary sources; the species was a benthopelagic cyprinid of the lacustrine zone, consistent with the shallow-shore habitat noted in the IUCN assessment.

As a member of the Barbodes radiation within Lake Lanao, it would have shared the generalised barb body plan — a moderately compressed, fusiform fish with a small terminal mouth, one pair of barbels (or two pairs, depending on species within the group), and the cycloid scales typical of the family. Detailed counts and measurements exist in Herre's original description; the species was regarded as commercially significant by local fishers in the 1960s.

Habitat

Barbodes disa was restricted to Lake Lanao, a large, high-altitude (2303 ft a.s.l.) volcanic crater lake in Lanao del Sur Province, Mindanao. The IUCN assessment categorises its habitat as freshwater inland wetlands (permanent lakes), with the species occupying shallow shore zones — a benthopelagic, lacustrine fish rather than a river dweller.

Water parameters recorded for the species from community data indicate a temperature range of approximately 68–79 °F, a pH of 4.0–7.0, and a hardness of roughly 18–90 ppm, reflecting the soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to near-neutral conditions typical of the lake's endemic cyprinid fauna. Lake Lanao's upland setting moderates temperatures relative to lowland Philippine waters, and the lake historically supported clear, well-oxygenated conditions in its littoral zone.

Feeding

No detailed dietary study of Barbodes disa appears to be documented in the sources available; the species' diet is not explicitly described in the IUCN assessment or in FishBase notes. As a benthopelagic cyprinid of the littoral and sub-littoral zones of Lake Lanao, it would be consistent with the omnivorous or invertivorous feeding mode typical of Barbodes and related barbs — foraging for small invertebrates, algae, and detritus along the shallow substrate and among aquatic vegetation.

The Lake Lanao cyprinid fauna was noted to have commercial value for local fisheries in the 1960s, suggesting the endemic barbs formed a significant component of the lake's fish production before the extinctions, though specific dietary data for this species remain sparse.

Mating

No direct observations of the reproductive behaviour of Barbodes disa are documented in available sources, and the species is now extinct. As a cyprinid barb, it would be expected to follow the standard barb spawning strategy: egg-scattering with no parental care. Barbs are non-guarding, broadcast spawners in which a male drives a gravid female over or among substrate or vegetation, releasing eggs and milt in close contact.

Given the lacustrine habitat — shallow littoral shores of Lake Lanao — spawning likely occurred among aquatic plants or over substrates in the marginal zone, as is typical of cyprinid species in still and slow-water environments. No nest is built and no territory is maintained beyond the transient pursuit of the female during courtship.

Breeding

Like all barbs, Barbodes disa would have been an egg-scattering spawner depositing adhesive eggs with no subsequent parental care. Eggs would be scattered among plants or over the substrate of Lake Lanao's littoral zone, left to develop unguarded. Adults likely consumed eggs opportunistically, as is typical across the barb group.

Because the species was lost before any captive-breeding programme was established, no ex-situ reproduction was ever achieved and no husbandry records exist. The species was not maintained in aquaria at any point known in the literature, and its extinction was confirmed without any surviving captive population.

In the aquarium

Barbodes disa was never established in the aquarium trade and is now extinct. No husbandry information exists for the species. It is recorded as having had commercial value in the local fisheries of Lake Lanao in the early 1960s — appearing in market catches documented by Villaluz in 1966 — but it was not collected or maintained for ornamental purposes, and it disappeared before any such interest could develop.

The species serves as a cautionary example of how rapidly an endemic lake fauna can collapse under combined anthropogenic pressures, and it is referenced in conservation literature on the extraordinary and largely lost cyprinid radiation of Lake Lanao.

Conservation

Barbodes disa is assessed as Extinct (EX) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in 2020 (assessed November 2019 by Torres et al.). The species was last reliably recorded in 1964 and was not found in any of the surveys conducted between 1973 and 2017. The IUCN traces its extinction to several converging pressures specific to Lake Lanao.

The most significant documented driver was the introduction of invasive alien species: the goby Glossogobius giuris was introduced to Lake Lanao in the early 1960s and Giuris margaritacea in the early 1970s, and these gobies are considered to have outcompeted or preyed upon the endemic cyprinids, most of which disappeared within a decade of the introductions. Concurrent pressures included destructive overfishing using dynamite and other intensive methods, water extraction altering lake levels, widespread logging across the watershed degrading water quality, and increasing pollution. The species' conservation status had progressively worsened from Vulnerable (1990, 1994) to Critically Endangered (1996) before it was declared Extinct in the 2020 assessment cycle. The Lake Lanao cyprinid extinctions represent one of the largest recorded freshwater fish extinction events in Asia.
