Barbodes cataractae was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1934, based on a single holotype specimen (USNM 93137, 5.5 in TL) collected from the Cascade River at Murcielagos Bay, Misamis Occidental Province, Mindanao, Philippines, on 20 August 1909. The species has been placed in the genus Barbodes following current usage; many Philippine barbs were historically assigned to the large catch-all genus Puntius, but systematic revisions over the past two decades have redistributed these species among more natural genera.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Barbodes cataractae as a valid species. It is placed in the subfamily Smiliogastrinae, the group containing the small Asian barbs formerly lumped within Puntius. The ZooKeys Philippine freshwater fish checklist confirms this species as a valid Philippine endemic.
Original records associated the species with the Lake Lanao system as well as the Cascade River, though the validity and basis of the Lake Lanao records are uncertain given the very limited type-series material available.
Morphology
Detailed morphological data for Barbodes cataractae are sparse; the species is known primarily from the original type specimen. The holotype measured 5.5 in in total length, placing this fish among the medium-sized representatives of the genus rather than the diminutive barbs common in the Philippine fauna.

The river drains a tropical landscape in Misamis Occidental Province; water conditions consistent with northern Mindanao rivers are expected to be warm and freshwater throughout, with moderate current.
The name "Cascade River" implies a fast-flowing, possibly rocky watercourse with riffles or falls — habitat typical of many barbs that prefer clear, well-oxygenated moving water over gravel or rocky substrate. Specific water chemistry data (pH, hardness, temperature) for this locality are not recorded in the available sources. The eggs of egg-scattering barbs are adhesive and settle among plants, gravel, or rocky substrate after release. Adults take no interest in eggs or larvae after spawning. Whether Barbodes cataractae undertakes seasonal spawning migrations tied to Mindanao's rainfall seasonality is unknown.
Breeding
Barbodes cataractae has never been bred in captivity, and no aquarium-based breeding data exist for the species. It is not known to be held in any aquarium collection. Breeding biology is inferred from the egg-scattering, non-guarding reproductive strategy universal among barbs: adhesive eggs scattered over the substrate or among vegetation, no parental care of any kind, and larvae that must fend for themselves from the moment of hatching.
Given the species' Critically Endangered status and apparent absence from recent surveys, establishing a captive population with the aim of ex situ conservation breeding would require first locating any surviving wild individuals — a task that has proved elusive in surveys spanning four decades.

Barbodes cataractae is not available in the aquarium trade and has not been maintained in captivity. It is a species of conservation concern rather than an aquarium subject. No hobbyist records of the species in captivity are known.
The species' extreme rarity, uncertain survival status, and single known locality make it wholly unsuitable for the ornamental trade. Any future encounter with living specimens would be of significant scientific value and should be reported to Philippine conservation authorities rather than collected for the hobby.
Conservation
Barbodes cataractae is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List (2021 assessment, published February 2021; assessors: Armi Torres et al.). The assessment notes that the species has not been recorded in systematic surveys conducted between 1973 and 2017, spanning nearly half a century, and the possibility of extinction cannot be ruled out. Its extremely limited known range — a single river system in Misamis Occidental Province, Mindanao — means that any local catastrophe could eliminate the entire population.
Threats identified in the SHOAL/ASAP Freshwater Fish Conservation Report (2023) include pollution, sedimentation, invasive species introductions, overfishing, and destructive fishing practices. These pressures are widespread across Mindanao's freshwater systems. The Lake Lanao watershed, with which the species may historically have been associated, has suffered severe declines in its endemic fish fauna due to introduced species and habitat modification.
No specific conservation measures targeting Barbodes cataractae are currently documented in the published literature. The species' status underscores the broader crisis facing Philippine freshwater fish endemics, many of which have restricted ranges and face intense anthropogenic pressure on their river and lake habitats.
