Taxonomy & naming
Barbodes clemensi was described by the American ichthyologist Albert William Herre in 1924 from specimens collected in Lake Lanao, Mindanao, Philippines. It was originally placed in the old catch-all genus Puntius and for much of the twentieth century appeared in the literature as Puntius clemensi (Herre, 1924). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) now records the valid combination as Barbodes clemensi Herre, 1924, following the broad revision of Asian barb genera that redistributed many Philippine and Sundaic species out of the paraphyletic Puntius.
The species epithet clemensi honours an individual — likely a collector or patron connected to Herre's Philippine fieldwork — though the specific dedicatee is not documented in the cache sources. The Lake Lanao cyprinid radiation that included this species was one of the most remarkable freshwater endemic assemblages in Southeast Asia, comprising dozens of species found nowhere else on Earth.
Morphology

Lake Lanao sits at approximately 700 metres elevation in a volcanic caldera and is one of the oldest lakes in Southeast Asia, having been isolated long enough for an extraordinary endemic radiation of freshwater fishes to evolve — at one time supporting more than 18 endemic cyprinid species alongside other endemic taxa.
The lake's waters are warm and relatively clear, fed by rainfall and mountain streams. As a lake-adapted barb, Barbodes clemensi inhabited the open and littoral waters of the lake, likely foraging over vegetated shallows or around the rocky margins. The precise depth preferences and microhabitat associations are not documented in available sources.
Feeding
No direct stomach-content or feeding studies for Barbodes clemensi are available in the literature. As a small barb in the genus Barbodes, it would have been an omnivore, taking invertebrates, algal material, and organic detritus — the generalist feeding strategy typical of lacustrine cyprinids in Southeast Asia.

Conservation
Barbodes clemensi is listed as Extinct (EX) on the IUCN Red List, assessed in 2020 as part of a major evaluation of Lake Lanao endemics. The 2020 IUCN assessment wave declared approximately 31 freshwater species newly Extinct, and nearly half of those were endemic to Lake Lanao alone — a mass extinction event in a single lake. The last confirmed record of Barbodes clemensi dates to 1975.
The primary drivers of extinction in Lake Lanao were the introduction of non-native predatory and competing fish species — most devastatingly the introduced Flowerhorn and other cichlids, carp, and tilapia — combined with overfishing, siltation from deforestation in the watershed, and pollution from agricultural runoff and human settlement. The lake's endemic cyprinid radiation, once numbering more than 18 species found nowhere else on Earth, has been almost completely erased within the span of a few decades.
Barbodes clemensi joins a growing list of Philippine freshwater endemics for which no ex-situ populations were ever established. The Lake Lanao extinctions are among the most severe freshwater biodiversity losses in recorded history and are frequently cited in conservation literature as an example of the catastrophic effect of introduced species on isolated endemic lake faunas.
