Taxonomy & naming
Barbodes katolo was described by the American ichthyologist Albert William Christian Theodore Herre in 1924, originally placed in the genus Barbodes. It is part of the Lake Lanao cyprinid endemic assemblage — an evolutionary radiation of barbs that diversified within the lake over geological time and was documented by Herre during his extensive surveys of Philippine freshwater fishes in the early twentieth century.
The species has also been treated under the old combination Puntius katolo (Herre, 1924), reflecting the long-standing practice of placing most South and Southeast Asian small barbs in the sprawling genus Puntius. Under the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the current valid combination is Barbodes katolo Herre, 1924. An orthographic variant, Barbodes katalo, appears in some literature but is an error; the accepted spelling is katolo. The genus Barbodes sensu stricto is a Philippine-centred lineage within the broader cyprinid radiation of island Southeast Asia.
Morphology
FishBase records a maximum standard length of 4.5 in for males and 3.5 in for females, making Barbodes katolo a medium-sized barb within the Lake Lanao endemic flock. The species was a benthopelagic cyprinid, consistent with life in the shallow littoral zones of the lake.
Detailed meristic and morphometric data are sparse in the available literature. Like related Philippine Barbodes, it presumably had the laterally compressed, moderately deep body typical of the group, equipped with barbels and the pharyngeal teeth characteristic of cyprinids. No colour description survives in the post-collection literature consulted, and the limited formal record reflects how quickly the species declined before thorough documentation could be made.
Habitat
Lake Lanao is an ancient tectonic lake situated at about 2297 ft elevation in the Lanao del Sur province of Mindanao, the Philippines. It is one of the oldest lakes in Southeast Asia and was historically characterised by clear, oligotrophic to mesotrophic waters supporting a diverse endemic freshwater fauna. Barbodes katolo occupied the shallow littoral areas of the lake, where it would have encountered submerged vegetation, structured substrates, and the warm, well-oxygenated conditions of the near-shore zone.
By the latter half of the twentieth century the lake had shifted toward a eutrophic state due to agricultural run-off, municipal effluent, and unchecked nitrogen loading. Coliform contamination became severe, and the clarity and dissolved-oxygen levels of the shallows — the habitat this species depended on — degraded substantially. No specific water chemistry parameters (pH, hardness, temperature) were recorded for the species in the literature consulted, but Lake Lanao at altitude is a warm tropical lake, with surface temperatures broadly in the tropical range typical of lowland to mid-elevation Philippine waters.
Feeding
No direct dietary study of Barbodes katolo exists in the literature consulted. By analogy with related Philippine Barbodes and the broader barb guild of shallow tropical lake margins, the species was likely an omnivore taking small invertebrates, algae, and organic detritus from the littoral substrate and the lower water column.
Its benthopelagic classification on FishBase is consistent with foraging across both the bottom and the open water of shallow areas rather than being a strictly benthic or pelagic specialist. The loss of structured, well-oxygenated shallows through eutrophication would have progressively degraded both foraging habitat and prey availability.
Mating
No spawning observations of Barbodes katolo were recorded before its extinction. As a member of the family Cyprinidae and the genus Barbodes, it would have been an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in line with the reproductive biology shared across barbs. Males would have pursued gravid females, with eggs and milt released together over suitable substrate — likely the vegetated shallows of Lake Lanao's littoral zone.
No nest construction, parental care, or pair bonding is known in any Barbodes species, and none should be inferred for Barbodes katolo. The adhesive eggs, once scattered, would have been abandoned by both parents.
Breeding
No captive breeding of Barbodes katolo was ever achieved or attempted; the species was extinct or on the verge of extinction before the conservation value of ex-situ breeding programmes for Lake Lanao endemics was recognised. It almost certainly followed the standard barb reproductive pattern: adhesive eggs scattered over substrate or fine-leaved aquatic plants in the littoral zone, with no parental care and no protection of eggs or larvae.
The degradation of Lake Lanao's shallows through eutrophication and contamination would have impacted breeding directly, eliminating clean, structured spawning habitat and exposing embryos and larvae to hypoxic conditions and elevated coliform loads.
In the aquarium
Barbodes katolo was never established in the aquarium trade. It is an extinct species known only from museum specimens collected in Lake Lanao and from the scientific literature. No live individuals have been recorded since 1977, and no captive population exists anywhere in the world.
The species therefore holds no aquarium husbandry profile. Its inclusion in the atlas is as a record of a lost member of one of Southeast Asia's most remarkable freshwater evolutionary radiations and as a reminder of the speed with which island lake endemic faunas can collapse when multiple stressors converge.
Conservation
Barbodes katolo is assessed as Extinct (EX) on the IUCN Red List (2020 assessment, DOI: 10.2305/IUCN.UK.2020-3.RLTS.T18891A90996925.en). The last confirmed record is from 1977; despite subsequent surveys of Lake Lanao no individual has been located. The IUCN assessment identifies the principal drivers of extinction as the introduction of predatory invasive species into the lake, advanced eutrophication driven by agricultural and municipal nutrient loading, coliform contamination from human waste, and the absence of any conservation intervention while the population declined.
Lake Lanao once harboured an extraordinary flock of endemic cyprinids, several of which shared Barbodes katolo's fate. The collapse of this fauna represents one of the most severe documented losses of freshwater biodiversity in the Philippines and in island Southeast Asia as a whole. No living specimens are held in captivity, and the species is considered beyond recovery. Its extinction underscores the vulnerability of ancient island lake faunas to rapid anthropogenic change — a pattern repeated in many of the world's great endemic lake systems.
