Taxonomy & naming
Barbodes lindog was described by the American ichthyologist Albert William Clement Theodore Herre in 1924, with the type locality recorded as Dansalan on the shores of Lake Lanao, Mindanao, Philippines. The species epithet lindog is a local Maranao vernacular name for the fish.
The genus Barbodes has a complex taxonomic history. Many Southeast Asian barbs were formerly placed in the large, polyphyletic genus Puntius, and before that in Barbus or Systomus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the current valid combination as Barbodes lindog Herre, 1924. Lake Lanao harboured a remarkable endemic radiation of Barbodes species — a freshwater equivalent of an island adaptive radiation — and for much of the twentieth century ichthyologists described and debated the boundaries of these closely related forms. The collapse of the endemic fauna has made revisionary work both more urgent and more difficult.
FishBase lists the species under Barbodes and assigns it to the family Cyprinidae, consistent with the Catalog of Fishes placement.
Morphology
Barbodes lindog reaches a maximum recorded total length of approximately 5 in, making it a medium-sized member of the Lake Lanao barb assemblage. Like other Barbodes, it has the laterally compressed, moderately deep body plan typical of Asian cyprinids of this group, with a subterminal mouth suited to picking food from vegetated substrate.
Detailed meristic and morphological data for B. lindog specifically are sparse in the accessible literature. Lake Lanao's endemic Barbodes are closely related to one another and were distinguished largely by subtle differences in body proportions, scale counts and coloration. Given the near-disappearance of wild populations, fresh material for modern morphological or genetic study is difficult to obtain, and the species remains incompletely characterised by contemporary standards.
Habitat
Barbodes lindog is confined to Lake Lanao, a large, ancient tectonic lake in the Lanao Plateau of Mindanao, Philippines. Lake Lanao is the largest lake in Mindanao and the second largest in the Philippines, situated at about 2297 ft above sea level. The lake drains northward via the Agus River into Iligan Bay.
Within the lake, B. lindog inhabits shallow, weedy bays where aquatic vegetation provides cover and feeding habitat. The shallow littoral zone, with its stands of pondweeds and other macrophytes, appears to be the core habitat, and the species historically concentrated there for both feeding and reproduction. Lake Lanao is a warm tropical highland lake; its elevation moderates temperatures somewhat compared to lowland Philippine waters, though it remains fully tropical in character. Feeding

The reproductive biology is inferred from the shared egg-scattering mode of Barbodes and from the IUCN assessment's observation that shallow, vegetated lake margins serve as spawning habitat in the wild.
As a lacustrine barb in a large, historically productive lake, B. lindog likely spawned seasonally, with gravid females seeking out the dense macrophyte beds of shallow bays. Eggs would be adhesive and scattered among plants without parental care or guarding of any kind. Adults would give no further attention to eggs or larvae after spawning. Barbodes lindog is not maintained in the aquarium hobby under any documented programme. It is not a traded species, and given its Critically Endangered status and the near-total collapse of wild Lake Lanao populations, no captive population is known to exist outside the lake itself.
For aquarists interested in related and more accessible species, the Barbodes genus includes a number of medium-sized Philippine and Southeast Asian barbs that share the weed-bay habitat preferences of B. lindog. Any future conservation effort for the Lake Lanao endemic cyprinids would likely need to include ex-situ captive maintenance, but no such programme was documented in the sources available at the time of this article.
Conservation
Barbodes lindog is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List, most recently evaluated in 2019 (published in IUCN 2020). It is endemic to a single lake — Lake Lanao — and the scale of decline among the lake's endemic cyprinid fauna is one of the most severe freshwater extinction events documented in Asia. In 1995, eighteen endemic cyprinid species were recorded from the lake; by 2001, only three persisted: B. lindog, B. sirang, and B. tumba. The remaining fifteen species are believed to have been extirpated or are functionally extinct.
The primary drivers of collapse were the introduction of non-native predatory and competing fish (including flowerhorn and other cichlids, and various introduced tilapia and carp), compounded by overfishing with fine-meshed gill nets and progressive degradation of the shallow littoral habitat through watershed clearance and agricultural runoff into the lake margins. The ASAP Freshwater Fish conservation report identifies Lake Lanao as a critical priority for regional freshwater conservation action, and the lake's endemic fauna is listed among the most threatened freshwater assemblages in Southeast Asia.
Barbodes lindog was historically the second most commercially important fish in the lake, a measure of how abundant it once was. Its current population status within the lake is uncertain; whether it persists in viable numbers or exists only as scattered remnant individuals is unknown. No ex-situ conservation programme is documented. Recovery would require restoration of the littoral weed-bed habitat, management of invasive species, and cessation of the fine-mesh netting that historically removed large proportions of the population before fish reached reproductive maturity.
