Taxonomy & naming
Barbodes manalak was described by the American ichthyologist Albert William Christian Theodore Herre in 1924 from specimens collected in Lake Lanao, Mindanao, Philippines. The original description placed it in the genus Puntius, as was standard for virtually all Old World barbs at the time, and it was carried as Puntius manalak for decades.
Following the landmark revision of South and Southeast Asian barbs by Pethiyagoda et al. (2012), the old, polyphyletic genus Puntius was broken apart into a suite of more natural genera. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS — the authority for valid names) now places this species in Barbodes, yielding the current valid combination Barbodes manalak (Herre, 1924). ITIS lists the former combination Puntius manalak (Herre, 1924) as a synonym.
The Lake Lanao basin was home to a remarkable endemic cyprinid fauna — often called the "Lanao cyprinid flock" — comprising more than a dozen species that evolved in the lake's isolated waters. Barbodes manalak was one of the larger members of this assemblage.
Morphology
Barbodes manalak was a relatively large barb, reaching a recorded maximum total length of 12.5 in — large for a member of the genus. FishBase records the meristic formula as 4 dorsal spines, 8 dorsal soft rays, 3 anal spines and 5 anal soft rays.
Fresh specimens were described as dark green on the dorsal surface, transitioning to whitish on the flanks — a coloration pattern consistent with a benthopelagic fish occupying mid-water and deeper zones in the lake. Detailed osteological or meristic descriptions of preserved material are sparse in the accessible literature, reflecting the species' extinction before modern systematic methods could be fully applied to it.
Habitat
Lake Lanao is a large, ancient, tectonic lake in the Lanao del Sur province of Mindanao, the Philippines, sitting at an elevation of approximately 2303 ft above sea level. It is one of the oldest lakes in Southeast Asia and supported a diverse, highly endemic freshwater fauna as a result of its long isolation.
Barbodes manalak was a freshwater, benthopelagic species confined entirely to the waters of Lake Lanao. No other population is known. The lake's natural water chemistry is characterised by warm tropical temperatures and generally soft, slightly alkaline to neutral water; precise physico-chemical parameters for the species are not recorded in the accessible literature. The species' large size and benthopelagic habits suggest it occupied open and mid-depth lake waters rather than shallow margins.
Feeding
Detailed dietary studies of Barbodes manalak were not published before the species' extinction, and the accessible literature does not record its specific feeding ecology. As a larger benthopelagic barb in a complex lake ecosystem, it likely consumed invertebrates, smaller fishes and benthic food items, consistent with feeding habits documented in comparably sized members of the genus elsewhere in the Philippines and Southeast Asia.
Its role in the Lake Lanao food web was presumably significant given its former commercial importance to local fisheries, but the specifics remain undocumented.
Mating
No spawning observations of Barbodes manalak were recorded before its extinction. Like all members of the family Cyprinidae, it would have been an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner with no parental care — the uniform reproductive pattern of the barb lineage.
Cyprinid courtship typically involves a driving male pursuing a gravid female through open water or over the substrate, with eggs and milt released together and the adhesive eggs settling among vegetation or onto the lake bed. Neither nest-building nor any form of egg or fry guarding occurs in barbs.
Breeding
No captive breeding of Barbodes manalak was ever documented; the species was not maintained in aquaria before its extinction, and it was never established in the ornamental fish trade. Its reproductive biology can only be inferred from the general pattern of the family: egg-scattering over substrate or vegetation with no parental care, spawning triggered by seasonal or environmental cues in the lake.
Given the species' complete extinction and absence from any captive collection, there is no prospect of ex situ breeding. It is recorded as Extinct with no surviving population.
In the aquarium
Barbodes manalak has never been kept in the aquarium hobby. It was a commercially fished lake species — too large and too dependent on the open-water environment of Lake Lanao to have been suitable for the ornamental trade — and it went extinct before any captive programme could have been established.
The species serves today as a cautionary example of island endemism and freshwater extinction: a distinctive cyprinid known only from a single lake, lost within decades of significant ecological disturbance to that lake's ecosystem.
Conservation
Barbodes manalak is assessed as Extinct (EX) on the IUCN Red List (assessment 1996). It was previously of commercial value in the fisheries of Lake Lanao but is now gone from the wild, with no captive population. The species is one of several Lake Lanao endemic cyprinids that were driven to extinction during the twentieth century.
The collapse of the Lake Lanao endemic fauna is attributed primarily to the introduction of non-native predatory fishes — most significantly snakehead (Channa striata) and flier cichlid (Parachromis managuensis) — combined with heavy fishing pressure and deteriorating water quality from sedimentation and agricultural runoff into the lake catchment. The Philippine government has at various times sought to restore the lake's ecology, but the endemic cyprinid fauna, including the manalak, cannot be recovered.
