Taxonomy & naming
Barbodes montanoi was originally described by the French ichthyologist Henri-Émile Sauvage in 1881. For much of the twentieth century Philippine barbs of this character were placed in the expansive catch-all genus Puntius, and the species was widely listed as Puntius montanoi. The current valid combination, Barbodes montanoi (Sauvage, 1881), follows the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), which recognises Barbodes as the appropriate genus for this Philippine lineage of Asian barbs. The parenthetical authority marks the subsequent transfer out of Sauvage's original genus.
A formal redescription was published by Hui and Husana in 2021 in the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology, based on the holotype and a series of specimens collected from the Enchanted Falls and Ugnop Cave system in the Agusan River basin, Mindanao. That work clarified the morphological diagnosis of the species and firmly anchored its type locality within the Agusan drainage. The redescription made clear that the species has been poorly documented since its original description, and that the Agusan basin population represents the only confirmed wild stock.
Morphology
Barbodes montanoi is a moderately sized barb. Specimens examined in the Hui and Husana (2021) redescription spanned 2.5–3.5 in standard length, with live total length reaching approximately 3.5 in; FishBase cites 3.5 in TL as the maximum recorded size. The body form is the typical compressed, fusiform shape of the genus, suited to life in flowing freshwater over substrate.
The species is benthopelagic in habit. Detailed colouration notes from the 2021 redescription — based on fresh and preserved specimens from the Agusan drainage — distinguish it from allied Philippine Barbodes by meristic and morphometric characters documented in that work. Like other members of the genus it carries a single dorsal spine and barbels at the corners of the mouth characteristic of cyprinids.
Habitat
The species is known exclusively from the Agusan River basin in the interior of Mindanao, central Philippines. Its confirmed localities include the area around Enchanted Falls and the Ugnop Cave system, both within the Agusan drainage — habitats that combine clear to moderately turbid freshwater streams with rocky substrates, waterfalls, and cave-associated channels. FishBase characterises it as a tropical freshwater, benthopelagic species.
Water chemistry data from ecological surveys of sympatric Mindanao river fauna provide context: Mindanao's interior river basins are typically warm tropical lowland to low-montane waters, with temperatures consistent with the Philippine lowland thermal regime. The Agusan basin drains a broad interior plain before discharging to Butuan Bay, and the species' association with waterfall and cave habitats suggests occupation of clear, well-oxygenated reaches rather than sluggish lowland sections. FishBase records the species as a freshwater cyprinid without diadromous movements.
Feeding
No detailed dietary study of Barbodes montanoi in the wild has been published in the available literature. As a benthopelagic cyprinid in a fast-water, rocky stream environment, it is expected to forage on benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms — along with algae and organic detritus scraped or picked from rocky and gravelly substrates, consistent with the feeding ecology of other riverine Barbodes species.
Ecological survey data from Mindanao river systems document the species in association with other cyprinids in mixed-species assemblages, suggesting it occupies a generalised omnivore niche within the benthic community. In the absence of species-specific gut-content data, feeding notes must remain inferential from genus-level biology and habitat context.
Mating
Barbodes montanoi has not been studied in the context of reproductive behaviour in the wild. As a member of Barbodes — a genus of cyprinid barbs — it is expected to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner following the pattern universal in the barb lineage. In this mode a gravid female is driven through suitable spawning habitat by one or more males, eggs and milt are released together, and no pair bond, territory, or nest is formed.
In riverine barbs of comparable ecology, spawning is typically triggered by seasonal cues — rising water levels, increased flow, or temperature shifts associated with the monsoon — over suitable gravel or rocky substrates. There is no evidence or expectation of parental care, nest construction, or mouthbrooding in this species.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Barbodes montanoi appear in the available hobby or scientific literature, consistent with its rarity in collections and its Endangered status in the wild. Based on the reproductive biology of the genus and the egg-scattering norm of cyprinid barbs, eggs would be adhesive and deposited over rocky or gravelly substrate in flowing water, with no parental care following spawning. Adults in a captive setting would be expected to consume eggs if given the opportunity.
The species' endemism to a single river system and its cave-and-waterfall habitat association suggest specialised ecological requirements that would need to be met for successful ex-situ breeding. No captive population is documented in the literature surveyed for this account.
In the aquarium
Barbodes montanoi is not a species of the mainstream ornamental trade and is essentially absent from the hobby at the time of writing. Its restricted endemic range, Endangered status, and the absence of established captive-breeding stock make it unlikely to be available through normal trade channels, and collection from wild populations in the Agusan basin would present both legal and conservation concerns given its threat status.
For hobbyists with an interest in Philippine endemic cyprinids, this species represents a significant gap in available material: no husbandry parameters specific to the species appear in the published literature. Its ecology suggests clear, well-oxygenated, warm flowing water with a rocky or gravel substrate would be appropriate, but specific recommendations cannot be made without aquarium experience or habitat data beyond what is currently documented.
Conservation
Barbodes montanoi is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii), assessed 25 March 2020. The criteria reflect a restricted extent of occurrence, a very small area of occupancy, and a continuing decline in the quality and area of its freshwater habitat. The species is endemic to the Agusan River basin in Mindanao and has no documented populations outside that system.
The principal threats to the species and its habitat are those facing the broader Philippine endemic freshwater fauna: deforestation and agricultural conversion in Mindanao's interior catchments, which increases sedimentation and disrupts the clear-water rocky stream habitats the species depends on; modification of river channels; and the general intensification of land use in the Agusan plain. Cave and waterfall habitats, while offering some refuge from direct disturbance, are vulnerable to catchment-level changes in water quality and flow. No specific conservation programme targeting this species is documented in the available literature.
