Taxonomy & naming
Barbodes palaemophagus was described by the American ichthyologist Albert William Herre in 1924 from a single specimen taken at Lumbatan on the south shore of Lake Lanao, Mindanao, Philippines. The original description placed it in the genus Barbodes, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) retains that placement; the full combination is Barbodes palaemophagus (Herre, 1924), with the parenthetical authority noting the original genus assignment.
The genus Barbodes has a complex taxonomic history. The old catch-all genus Puntius was progressively dismembered by Pethiyagoda et al. (2012) and subsequent workers; Barbodes, as recognised today, is the genus that received many of the Philippine and Bornean species. Lake Lanao alone harboured an exceptional radiation of cyprinid barbs — the 'Lanao species flock' — comprising perhaps eighteen or more endemic species in Barbodes and related genera, of which the great majority are now extinct or undetected for decades.
The species epithet palaemophagus is derived from Greek, apparently referring to diet: palaemon (a shrimp genus) and phagus (eating), meaning 'shrimp-eater'. This suggests the original specimen had shrimp material in its gut, though the description was based on a single individual and detailed dietary data are not available.
Morphology
Barbodes palaemophagus reached a maximum recorded total length of 5 in, placing it among the larger of the Lake Lanao barb endemics. It was a benthopelagic species, inhabiting the water column near the lake bottom rather than being strictly demersal or strictly mid-water.
Beyond size and general body form consistent with the genus Barbodes, detailed morphological descriptions are sparse — the species was described from a single specimen, and no subsequent collections are known. No published accounts of colour in life are available, and the species' external anatomy was not redescribed or updated in the decades between its description and its extinction.
Habitat
The species was a lacustrine (lake-dwelling) fish, restricted entirely to Lake Lanao — a large, ancient tectonic lake situated at approximately 2297 ft above sea level on the Lanao Plateau of central Mindanao, Philippines. The type locality is Lumbatan on the south shore. The species inhabited the shallow littoral and sublittoral zones of the lake, the same shores that underwent the most severe habitat change as the lake's fishery intensified and alien species were introduced.
Lake Lanao's water is warm and clear, fed by rainfall and streams draining the surrounding volcanic highlands. Published water chemistry data specific to B. palaemophagus are not available, but the lake is characterised by moderately alkaline, well-oxygenated waters typical of high-altitude tropical lakes in the Philippines. No temperature or pH parameters specific to this species appear in the assessment literature.
Feeding
The species epithet palaemophagus — 'shrimp-eater' — suggests that the original specimen contained freshwater shrimp or shrimp-like crustaceans in its gut at the time of collection. This implies a carnivorous or invertivore diet focused at least in part on benthic crustaceans in the shallow-shore zone of Lake Lanao.
No further dietary data are available. As with many of the Lake Lanao endemic barbs, the species was gone before any systematic ecological study of its feeding behaviour could be undertaken.
Mating
No direct observations of the reproductive behaviour of Barbodes palaemophagus are recorded. As a member of the family Cyprinidae and the genus Barbodes, it would be expected to have been an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in the manner universal among barbs: a driving male pursuing a gravid female over the substrate or among vegetation, with eggs and milt released in brief paired contact and no subsequent parental involvement.
The shallow-shore habitat that the species occupied — and that was most severely affected by introduced tilapia and destructive seine netting — would have been the likely spawning habitat for a littoral lacustrine barb of this size.
Breeding
No breeding data exist for Barbodes palaemophagus in the wild or in captivity. The species was never held in aquaria, and no captive-breeding programme was established before it was lost. Based on genus-level biology, breeding mode would have involved adhesive eggs scattered over the substrate or among aquatic vegetation near the lake shore, with no nest construction and no parental care of eggs or fry.
The facts.breeding fields reflect inferred biology consistent with the genus. The species' extinction before any reproductive study could be conducted means that clutch size, spawning season, and developmental data are entirely unknown.
In the aquarium
Barbodes palaemophagus was never maintained in the aquarium trade and is now extinct. It cannot be kept.
The Lake Lanao barb endemics as a group were never widely collected for the hobby — the lake is remote, the fish were not especially ornamental by trade standards, and the introduction of commercial fisheries with non-native species changed the lake's ecology before any systematic collection for the hobby could occur. The species serves today as a documented example of freshwater biodiversity lost before it could be studied or conserved.
Conservation
Barbodes palaemophagus is assessed as Extinct (EX) on the IUCN Red List, in the 2020-3 assessment by Torres et al. The last confirmed record dates to 1975. The species was declared extinct as part of a sweeping 2020 IUCN assessment that found approximately half of the newly declared freshwater fish extinctions globally were Lake Lanao endemics — an outcome almost unparalleled in modern freshwater biology.
The collapse of the Lake Lanao fish fauna is one of the most severe documented freshwater extinction events of the twentieth century. The introduction of alien fish — particularly Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), flowerhorn cichlids, and other non-native species — combined with the use of fine-mesh seine nets and the degradation of the lake's shallow shores through sedimentation and pollution, eliminated most of the endemic cyprinid community within decades. By the 2020 assessment, the great majority of the lake's endemic barbs had not been recorded since the mid-twentieth century.
No individuals of B. palaemophagus survive in captivity. The species is gone. It stands as a symbol of what is lost when the unique freshwater faunas of island lakes are overwhelmed by introduced species before scientific attention or conservation intervention can be brought to bear.
