Taxonomy & naming
Barbodes sirang was described by the American ichthyologist Albert William Herre in 1932 from specimens collected in Lake Lanao, Mindanao, Philippines. Herre was prolific in his documentation of Philippine freshwater fishes, and several of the Lake Lanao cyprinids bear his authority. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the current valid combination as Barbodes sirang Herre, 1932, placing it in the genus Barbodes within the subfamily Smiliogastrinae of the family Cyprinidae.
Older literature frequently records this fish as Puntius sirang. The reclassification reflects a series of revisions that progressively dismantled the catch-all genus Puntius into more natural lineages. Barbodes, as currently constituted, embraces a distinct clade of largely Southeast Asian barbs; the name has long been used in the Philippine literature for the Lanao endemics and their relatives. The epithet sirang is a Philippine vernacular term used locally for the fish.
Morphology
Barbodes sirang is a moderately sized barb reaching a maximum recorded total length of 5 in, placing it at the larger end of the Lake Lanao endemic cyprinids. Like other members of the genus it has the compressed, moderately deep body and terminal mouth typical of rheophilic and lacustrine cyprinids adapted to mid-water foraging.
Detailed morphological descriptions of live coloration are sparse in the accessible literature. The species belongs to a flock in which several members are very similar, and in the absence of fresh specimens reliable distinctions between some Lake Lanao barbs rely on meristic counts and body proportions documented by Herre and later ichthyologists. Its benthopelagic habit suggests a fish that forages both in open water and near the bottom.
Habitat
Lake Lanao lies at an elevation of approximately 2297 ft in the Lanao del Sur province of Mindanao. It is an ancient lake, estimated to be between two and twenty million years old, and its geological age and isolation allowed the evolution of a remarkable endemic cyprinid fauna. The lake is warm and relatively clear, surrounded by volcanic soils and fed by numerous streams draining the Bukidnon Plateau.
Barbodes sirang is recorded as a benthopelagic freshwater species, occupying the water column and littoral zones of the lake itself. As a member of the Lanao endemic flock it is wholly confined to Lake Lanao and its immediate inflows; it has no recorded presence in any other water body. Temperature and water-chemistry parameters specific to this species are not well documented in the accessible literature, but the lake maintains warm tropical conditions year-round consistent with its lowland-elevation location.
Feeding
Detailed dietary studies on Barbodes sirang in the wild are not available in the accessible literature. By analogy with other Lake Lanao endemic barbs and with benthopelagic cyprinids of similar size and form, the species is presumed to feed on invertebrates, small organisms associated with the lake bottom, and organic matter, supplementing this with whatever mid-water zooplankton and insect matter is available.
The species had minor commercial fisheries use historically, which implies it was taken incidentally in small-scale artisanal nets targeting the broader lake fishery rather than being a dedicated target. Whether populations retain feeding behaviour representative of the original wild ecology is uncertain given the severe documented declines.
Mating
No direct observations of courtship or spawning behaviour in Barbodes sirang have been documented in the accessible literature. As a member of Cyprinidae, and consistent with all barbs studied to date, it is expected to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Males would court gravid females in open water or over the substrate, driving alongside them until eggs and milt are released together.
There is no evidence of nest construction, bubble-nesting, mouthbrooding or any form of parental care in any member of Barbodes. Courtship behaviour likely follows the pattern seen in other cyprinids of similar size and habitat — brief, vigorous chasing with no sustained pair bond — but this remains unconfirmed for the species specifically.
Breeding
Barbodes sirang is presumed to be an egg-scatterer that broadcasts adhesive eggs into the water column or over the substrate without providing any parental care, in common with all cyprinids in its clade. Reproductive specifics — seasonality, fecundity, preferred spawning habitat — have not been documented in published studies accessible to date.
The severe decline of wild populations means that captive-breeding programmes, should they be attempted, would need to begin with very few founder individuals. No established aquaculture or ex-situ conservation programme for this species has been identified in the accessible literature, which is itself an indicator of how little conservation infrastructure surrounds the Lake Lanao endemic flock.
In the aquarium
Barbodes sirang does not appear in the international aquarium trade and is not available to hobbyists. It is a Critically Endangered lake endemic from a very restricted range, and there is no record of it being bred in captivity or maintained as an ornamental fish.
Its habitat requirements — warm, well-oxygenated water in a large ancient lake at moderate tropical elevation — and its uncertain status in the wild make it an unsuitable candidate for typical aquarium keeping. The species is of scientific and conservation interest rather than practical aquarium interest, and any future captive work would properly belong within a structured conservation-breeding programme rather than the hobby.
Conservation
Barbodes sirang is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List, confirmed by FishBase citing an assessment of 12 November 2019. The species is endemic to Lake Lanao, a water body that has lost a large proportion of its native cyprinid fauna following the introduction of alien predatory fishes — particularly Flowerhorn cichlids, red devil cichlids and other exotics — beginning in the late twentieth century. The twelve or so endemic barbs of the lake, including B. sirang, suffered catastrophic declines from predation, competition and overfishing compounded by sedimentation and habitat degradation of the littoral zone.
Some Lake Lanao endemics are now believed to be extirpated or reduced to fragments of their former range. The SEAFDEC documentation of Lake Lanao lists Barbodes sirang among the endemic cyprinids that supported small-scale local fisheries before decline set in. Effective conservation would require management of invasive species, restoration of riparian habitat around the lake's shoreline, and potentially an ex-situ rescue programme — none of which appear to have been comprehensively implemented for this species as of the most recent assessments.
