Taxonomy & naming
Barbodes truncatulus was described by the American ichthyologist Albert William Christian Theodore Herre in 1924, in his landmark paper on the freshwater fishes of the Philippines published in the Philippine Journal of Science. Herre worked extensively on the Lake Lanao cyprinid fauna at a time when the lake's remarkable endemic radiation was still intact, naming numerous species from that single water body.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats the current valid combination as Barbodes truncatulus (Herre, 1924), the parenthetical authority indicating that the species was originally described in a different genus. The genus Barbodes itself was historically used for a broad assemblage of Southeast Asian and Philippine barbs; post-2012 revisionary work by Pethiyagoda and colleagues split the old catch-all Puntius into a suite of more natural genera, and the Philippine Lake Lanao endemics are retained in Barbodes under the current classification.
The specific epithet truncatulus is a Latin diminutive meaning "somewhat truncated" or "cut short," likely alluding to some feature of the fish's profile or terminal morphology as perceived by Herre at the time of description.
Morphology
Detailed morphological data for Barbodes truncatulus are sparse in the contemporary literature, as the species was never extensively studied after its original description and is now extinct. FishBase records a maximum total length of 5 in, placing it among the larger members of the Lake Lanao Barbodes flock, which ranged from small minnow-sized forms to moderately sized fishes.
Like other members of the genus, it was presumably a laterally compressed, deepish-bodied cyprinid with the typical barbel complement and fin arrangement of the group. Without preserved specimens in good condition and modern morphological studies, fine details of scalation, colour pattern, and meristics are not reliably recoverable from the published record, and speculative reconstruction would go beyond the available data.
Habitat
Barbodes truncatulus was restricted entirely to Lake Lanao, a large, ancient tectonic lake situated on the Bukidnon-Lanao plateau of Mindanao at approximately 2297 ft elevation. Lake Lanao is the second-largest lake in the Philippines and one of the most ancient lake systems in Southeast Asia, its isolation having driven the evolution of an extraordinary cyprinid fauna found nowhere else on Earth.
Water chemistry data for Lake Lanao from the southeastern basin document a warm tropical environment with a pH range of roughly 6.5 to 8.5 — slightly alkaline conditions overall — and moderate hardness around 109 ppm. Surface water temperatures in the lake are typical of tropical highland lakes, broadly in the 75–82 °F range. The lake supports littoral vegetation, and the cyprinid flock occupied a variety of ecological niches across the lake's different zones.
Feeding
No detailed dietary studies specific to Barbodes truncatulus are available, and the species' extinction before the era of modern ecological ichthyology means that fine-grained dietary data are unlikely to be recovered. Within the Lake Lanao Barbodes radiation, different species are understood to have diverged in feeding ecology — some taking invertebrates, others plant or algal material, others detritus — as part of the adaptive radiation that allowed so many closely related species to coexist in a single lake.
By analogy with other Barbodes and the broader barb family, it is reasonable to infer that B. truncatulus was an omnivore capable of exploiting multiple food sources from the lake's littoral and open-water zones. Given its size (up to 5 in TL), it was likely capable of consuming larger invertebrates as well as plant and algal matter.
Mating
Barbodes truncatulus, like all members of the barb family (Cyprinidae), was an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Barbs hold no nests, exhibit no mouthbrooding, and provide no parental care of any kind; the Lake Lanao Barbodes flock conforms to this fundamental cyprinid reproductive pattern. Courtship in this group involves a male driving a ripe female through vegetation or over the substrate, the two releasing eggs and milt together in a brief act of adhesive egg deposition.
No behavioural studies of courtship or spawning in B. truncatulus were conducted before the species' extinction, and no aquarium observations exist. The basic egg-scattering, non-guarding pattern is inferred from phylogenetic position and the universal reproductive strategy of the Cyprinidae.
Breeding
As a member of the Cyprinidae, Barbodes truncatulus was an egg-scatterer that deposited adhesive eggs over plants, substrates, or gravelly shallows with no subsequent parental care. Eggs would have been abandoned immediately after fertilisation, developing and hatching without any attendance by either parent. Adults were likely capable of consuming eggs opportunistically, as is typical across the family.
The species was never maintained or bred in captivity, and it is now extinct. Seasonal breeding patterns in Lake Lanao Barbodes are not well documented; some tropical lake barbs show seasonal spawning peaks linked to rainfall and water level changes, but species-specific information for B. truncatulus is not available.
In the aquarium
Barbodes truncatulus was never established in the aquarium hobby and is now extinct. No captive populations are known to exist. The species was never exported alive for the ornamental trade, and no aquarium care information is available.
The broader Lake Lanao Barbodes radiation was tragically lost before its biological richness was widely appreciated by the aquarium community; had living specimens been collected and maintained ex situ, some members of the flock might have survived. Barbodes truncatulus stands as a cautionary example of the irreversible losses that can result from the combination of invasive species introduction and habitat deterioration in isolated ancient lake systems.
Conservation
Barbodes truncatulus is assessed as Extinct (EX) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment published in January 2020. The species was endemic to Lake Lanao and has not been recorded in any scientific survey since the mid-twentieth century. Its extinction is part of one of the worst freshwater fish extinction events documented in Asia: the Lake Lanao cyprinid flock, comprising at least 18 endemic Barbodes species described by Herre in 1924, has been reduced to effectively no confirmed surviving members.
The primary drivers of extinction were the introduction of alien fish species — including predatory snakeheads and Flowerhorn cichlids — beginning in the 1950s and accelerating through subsequent decades, combined with intensifying human use of the lake catchment, water extraction, agricultural runoff, and lake acidification. These pressures acting simultaneously on an isolated, non-migratory endemic fauna with no refuge population outside the lake were catastrophic. The extinction of B. truncatulus and its congeners represents a permanent loss of evolutionary lineages that had been isolated and diversifying in Lake Lanao for millions of years.
