Barbodes tumba is a freshwater cyprinid endemic to the Lanao Plateau of Mindanao, Philippines, known almost exclusively from Lake Lanao and the streams draining that ancient, species-rich basin. Described by Albert Herre in 1924, it is one of only two endemic cyprinids that still persist in Lake Lanao — a lake that once harboured a celebrated radiation of barbs but has lost most of its native fish fauna over the past century to introduced predators and habitat degradation. Taxonomy & naming

Barbodes tumba was described by the American ichthyologist Albert William Herre in 1924, one of a number of cyprinids he named from the Lanao Plateau during his studies of Philippine freshwater fishes. The type locality is recorded in association with the Marinão or Lake Lanao area of Mindanao. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) records the valid combination as Barbodes tumba Herre, 1924, placed in the genus Barbodes following Kottelat's 2013 revision of Southeast Asian cyprinids. The species belongs to the subfamily Smiliogastrinae.

The genus Barbodes was historically a broad assemblage of medium to large Asian barbs, and like many cyprinids that were long carried under the old catch-all genus Puntius, B. tumba is now correctly referred to Barbodes under current systematic usage. Kottelat's 2013 catalogue (Raffles Bulletin of Zoology, Suppl. 27) provides the definitive reference for this placement. The species should not be confused with the many other Barbodes of the Philippines and the wider Indo-Pacific region.
