Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius arambourgi was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1935. The species epithet honours the French palaeontologist and zoologist Camille Arambourg (1885–1969), who made significant contributions to the natural history of North and East Africa. Like nearly all small African barbs, the species was historically placed in the broad genus Barbus or in Puntius, both of which were used as catch-all taxa for barb-like cyprinids across Africa and Asia. The genus Enteromius was resurrected and redefined in the context of the ongoing revision of African barb systematics, separating the African lineages from their Asian counterparts on the basis of molecular and morphological evidence.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Enteromius arambourgi (Pellegrin, 1935), with the parenthetical authority indicating the species was not originally placed in Enteromius. African barb taxonomy remains a work in progress, and the composition and limits of Enteromius are subject to revision as phylogenetic studies accumulate. Some older sources may list the species under Barbus arambourgi.
Morphology
Enteromius arambourgi is a small barb, reaching approximately 1.5–2.5 in in standard length. The body form is typical of the smaller West African Enteromius: moderately elongate and laterally compressed, with the blunt snout and subterminal mouth characteristic of bottom-associated feeders in the genus. Detailed meristic and coloration data for this species are sparse in the accessible literature.
As in most small African barbs, any sexual dimorphism is likely subtle — females becoming visibly fuller in the abdomen when gravid, males remaining slimmer. Precise fin-ray counts and colour pattern details are not well documented in secondary sources; the original description by Pellegrin (1935) constitutes the primary morphological reference.
Habitat
Enteromius arambourgi is native to West African freshwaters in the Guinea and Senegal region. Small Enteromius in this part of West Africa typically inhabit rivers, tributary streams, and seasonal pools in savanna and forest-edge zones, often in shallow water over sand, gravel, or leaf litter.
The water chemistry of West African lowland streams is variable. Forest streams tend toward soft, slightly acidic conditions, while savanna and coastal-plain drainages may be somewhat harder and closer to neutral pH. Based on the regional context, temperatures in the range of 72–79 °F and a pH of approximately 6.0–7.0 are consistent with the habitats where related species occur. Specific ecological data for this species from field surveys are not available in the accessible literature.
Feeding
Like other small Enteromius, Enteromius arambourgi is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore. Small West African barbs of this size class typically feed on microinvertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms — along with algal films, plant material, and organic detritus picked from the substrate and the water surface.

Spawning is stimulated by warm water and good nutritional condition. A driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, and eggs and milt are released in brief contact.
The adhesive eggs are scattered among fine-leaved plants, roots, or onto the substrate. Adults take no further interest in the eggs or larvae, and may consume any eggs that remain accessible. Courtship in small West African Enteromius follows the same broad pattern seen across the genus.
Breeding
No specific breeding account for Enteromius arambourgi in captivity has been recorded in the accessible hobby literature, and the species is not commonly encountered in the aquarium trade. The species would be expected to follow the standard Enteromius pattern: egg-scatterer with adhesive eggs, no parental care, and eggs hatching within one to two days at tropical temperatures.
A dedicated breeding setup for a small West African barb of this type would typically use a shallow tank with soft, slightly acidic water, fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, and a screen or layer of marbles to protect the eggs from the adults after spawning. Larvae become free-swimming within a few days and would be raised on infusoria and, later, nauplii of Artemia. All of this is inferred from the biology of related species — no firsthand captive breeding report has been traced for this species.
In the aquarium
Enteromius arambourgi is not a regular feature of the ornamental fish trade and is rarely encountered in hobbyist literature. Small West African Enteromius as a group are uncommon in the aquarium hobby relative to their Asian counterparts, partly because the trade routes for West African species are less developed and partly because many species are poorly known outside of their countries of origin.
If kept, a small shoal in a well-planted aquarium with soft to slightly hard, warm water and a varied diet would match the conditions of its native habitat. Its modest size and presumed peaceful temperament make it compatible with similarly sized, non-aggressive fishes. Specific care data are too sparse to state with confidence; the enthusiast would do best consulting regional specialists or dedicated West African fish forums for firsthand experience.
Conservation
Enteromius arambourgi has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; its status is Not Evaluated (NE). Many small, range-restricted African barbs fall into this gap — they are known from the scientific literature but have not been subject to the population surveys and threat assessments required for a formal Red List evaluation.
West African freshwater ecosystems face mounting pressure from deforestation, agricultural runoff, artisanal mining, and the disruption of seasonal flood cycles. For a species of limited apparent range confined to the rivers of Guinea and Senegal, these regional threats are potentially significant, even if the species' current conservation standing is unknown.
