Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius bigornei was formally described in 1988 by Christian Lévêque, Guy Teugels and Dirk Thys van den Audenaerde, three specialists whose combined work defined much of the West African cyprinid fauna during the late twentieth century. It was originally placed in the genus Barbus — then a sprawling catch-all for African and Asian barbs — under the combination Barbus bigornei. Subsequent molecular and morphological revision of African cyprinids transferred the species to Enteromius, the genus now applied to the great majority of small African barbs under the Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid nomenclature. The species epithet honours Rémy Bigorne, a French ichthyologist and hydrobiologist who contributed substantially to the study of freshwater fishes in West Africa. Naming a species after a contemporary collector or researcher was standard practice in descriptive ichthyology of this period, and Bigorne's work in the region made him an appropriate honoree for a fish from these drainages.
Morphology
Enteromius bigornei is a small, slender barb reaching a maximum recorded size of 4.5 in in standard length, placing it among the mid-sized members of the genus. The body form is typical of stream-adapted Enteromius: moderately compressed laterally, with a straight or gently arched dorsal profile and a slightly pointed snout. The dorsal fin carries 11 soft rays and the anal fin 8, counts that help distinguish it from closely related West African congeners.
FishBase assigns it a trophic level of 3.0, consistent with an opportunistic omnivore picking small invertebrates and plant material from the benthos. Specific colouration details are not well documented in the primary literature available, which is typical of many modestly sized Enteromius — detailed description rests in the original 1988 paper.
Habitat
The species is native to freshwater streams and rivers of the Upper Guinea forest region of West Africa. Its confirmed range covers the Little Scarcies basin in Sierra Leone and extends into adjacent drainages of western Côte d'Ivoire and eastern Liberia — a total extent of occurrence that is geographically restricted even by the standards of West African stream fishes. FishBase categorises it as benthopelagic, indicating a lifestyle spent in and around the lower water column and substrate.
The rivers of this region are generally soft and slightly acidic where forested catchments predominate, reflecting rainfall-dominated hydrology over laterite soils with limited buffering capacity. However, specific water chemistry data for collection localities of E. bigornei are not documented in the available sources. The Upper Guinea block experiences a strongly seasonal rainfall pattern, and the streams this species inhabits likely fluctuate substantially in flow between wet and dry seasons.
Feeding
The trophic level of 3.0 recorded by FishBase places Enteromius bigornei at the level of an omnivore feeding on a mixture of invertebrates and plant or detrital material, broadly consistent with the feeding ecology of most small Enteromius. Stream-dwelling barbs of this size typically exploit whatever is seasonally abundant in their benthic microhabitat — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, algae scraped from rock surfaces and organic detritus deposited among leaf litter and sand.
No detailed gut-content studies of this species appear in the accessible literature. Its ecology in this respect is likely similar to that of better-studied West African Enteromius congeners occupying equivalent forest-stream habitats.
Mating
Like all barbs, Enteromius bigornei is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is built and no parental care is provided. Courtship in stream-dwelling Enteromius typically involves one or more males driving a gravid female through vegetation, root masses or over the substrate, with eggs and milt released during brief contact between partners. The act of spawning is rapid, and the pair separates immediately afterward.
No observations specific to this species in the wild or in aquaria appear in the accessible literature, but the egg-scattering reproductive mode is universal and phylogenetically fixed in the group. Seasonality of spawning is likely tied to the pronounced wet-dry cycle of the Upper Guinea region, with rising water levels and increased food availability during the wet season providing the proximate cues.
Breeding
As an egg-scatterer, Enteromius bigornei would deposit adhesive eggs over plants, roots or gravel, after which the adults take no further interest in their offspring — and may actively consume the eggs if they encounter them. The eggs are left to develop in the substrate or among plant material without any guarding or attendance.
This species has not been documented in aquarium breeding accounts in the accessible literature, and it is not a fish currently available in the hobby trade. The breeding approach that works for related small West African Enteromius — a well-planted spawning tank with slightly soft, warm water, removal of adults after spawning, and rearing of fry on infusoria followed by small live foods — would be the logical starting point if the species were ever introduced to aquaculture.
In the aquarium
Enteromius bigornei is not an established aquarium fish. It does not appear in the ornamental trade, and no hobbyist accounts of keeping or breeding it are on record in the accessible sources. Its range is restricted to a politically and logistically challenging region of West Africa, and collection for export has not been a factor in its biology.
For any future introduction, the parameters of soft to moderately soft, warm, slightly acidic water consistent with Upper Guinea forest streams would be the appropriate target, with a diet of small live and frozen invertebrates supplemented by prepared foods. As with most small Enteromius, a shoaling setup with conspecifics would suit the species' social nature.
Conservation
Enteromius bigornei is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. Despite the species' naturally restricted range — the Little Scarcies basin and immediately adjacent drainages in Sierra Leone, western Côte d'Ivoire and Liberia — it is not currently considered to face elevated extinction risk. The Upper Guinea forest block it inhabits remains one of the more threatened freshwater biodiversity hotspots in Africa: forest cover has declined sharply since the mid-twentieth century through agricultural conversion, small-scale mining, charcoal production and infrastructure development, all of which affect stream quality through sedimentation, pollution and altered hydrology.
The species' modest area of occupancy means that local disturbance events, such as the artisanal diamond and gold mining that occurs across parts of Sierra Leone and Liberia, could still affect a meaningful fraction of the total population even under a Least Concern listing. It is not collected for the aquarium trade, so that pressure is absent. Continued monitoring of watershed condition in its core range, and the maintenance of riparian forest buffers along the small streams it inhabits, remain sensible precautions for this and many similar narrowly endemic West African barbs.
