Enteromius bagbwensis is a small West African stream barb endemic to the river systems of Sierra Leone, described by John Roxborough Norman in 1932 from tributaries of the Bagbwe River. Known from the Jong, Sewa, and Bagbwe drainages, it is a fusiform, barbeled cyprinid reaching under 4 in standard length, adapted to the clear freshwater streams and rivers of the Upper Guinea forest zone. The IUCN regards it as Vulnerable owing to its highly restricted range and the ongoing degradation of freshwater habitats in Sierra Leone — pressures that threaten the suite of small endemic fishes confined to individual river systems along the West African coast.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius bagbwensis was described by the British ichthyologist John Roxborough Norman in 1932, in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History (volume 10, issue 56, page 181), under the original binomial Barbus bagbwensis. The type locality is the tributaries of the Bagbwe River, Sierra Leone, and the holotype (BMNH 1932.5.18.20–21, the larger of two specimens) is held at the Natural History Museum, London. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences), the authority for valid names, records the current valid combination as Enteromius bagbwensis (Norman, 1932), placing it in the large and diverse African genus Enteromius.

The genus Enteromius encompasses much of the small-barb diversity of sub-Saharan Africa — a heterogeneous assemblage that has historically been shuffled among Barbus, Systomus, and allied catch-all genera as African cyprinid phylogenetics has been revised. The parenthetical around Norman's name signals that the species has been moved from his original genus Barbus into Enteromius without ambiguity about authorship. No subspecies or synonyms beyond the original Barbus combination are recognised.

Morphology

Enteromius bagbwensis is a moderately sized African barb, reaching up to 4 in standard length (SL) in males according to FishBase data. The body is fusiform — elongate and somewhat cylindrical — consistent with a benthopelagic fish of flowing water. Like other members of the genus it bears two pairs of barbels: the anterior pair does not reach the anterior margin of the eye, while the posterior pair extends beyond the hind margin of the eye, a diagnostic detail noted in the original description.

Dorsally, the species shares the structural features typical of Enteromius: 8 branched dorsal fin rays and 12 scales around the caudal peduncle. Beyond these counts, detailed colour descriptions from the type series are sparse in the literature, which is common for smaller African barbs described from preserved specimens in the early twentieth century. The overall impression is of a slender, active stream fish suited to the current-swept reaches of its native drainages.

Habitat

The species is confined to the freshwater drainages of Sierra Leone in West Africa — specifically the Jong, Sewa, and Bagbwe rivers, all flowing within or along the margins of the Upper Guinea forest zone. These are tropical, well-oxygenated lowland and foothill stream systems draining the interior highlands of the country toward the Atlantic coast. The substrate in such streams is typically sand, gravel, and exposed rock with patches of leaf litter and submerged woody debris.

No published water chemistry parameters specific to E. bagbwensis have been recorded, which is typical for lesser-known West African stream endemics. As a member of Enteromius in the Upper Guinea ecoregion, it is expected to inhabit warm, soft to moderately mineralised fresh water, consistent with the geology of the region. The West African stream barbs of this region generally occupy cool, fast-flowing sections as well as slower pools, and the species' benthopelagic habit suggests it forages in and near the bottom zone.

Feeding

No specific dietary studies exist for Enteromius bagbwensis in the published literature. As a member of Enteromius — a genus of generalist omnivores — it almost certainly feeds on a mix of small aquatic invertebrates (insect larvae, crustaceans, worms), algal material, and organic detritus picked from the substrate and the lower water column. This feeding mode is consistent with its benthopelagic lifestyle and its two pairs of barbels, which are sensory organs well suited to locating food items on or near the bottom.

Sierra Leonean stream barbs as a group occupy a similar trophic niche to other small Enteromius across sub-Saharan Africa, exploiting the invertebrate productivity of well-oxygenated stream beds. In the absence of species-specific data, the foraging pattern of closely related West African congeners — active, bottom-oriented grazing through the day — is the best guide to its ecology.

Mating

Enteromius bagbwensis has not been studied in spawning detail, but all evidence from the genus and the broader barb clade indicates it is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. In African stream barbs of this type, reproductive activity is typically triggered by seasonal rains and rising water levels, which flush streams with cooler, oxygen-rich water and provide the cues for males to pursue gravid females.

Courtship involves one or more males chasing a ripe female through vegetation or over the stream substrate. Eggs and milt are released together in brief spawning bursts, with no pair bond formed and no territory defended. The eggs, once released, receive no attention from either parent. This pattern — universal in Enteromius — reflects the ancestral barb reproductive strategy of broadcast scattering in moving fresh water.

Breeding

As an egg-scattering barb, Enteromius bagbwensis scatters adhesive eggs over the substrate or among fine-leaved plants and root tangles, where they lodge and develop without parental care. In related African Enteromius, clutch size depends on female condition and size; females become noticeably full-bodied when gravid. Once eggs are shed and fertilised, adults take no further role — in the wild, eggs drift or settle and are exposed to predation from other stream inhabitants, including conspecifics.

The species has not been bred in captivity in any documented record known from the cache, which is unsurprising for a Vulnerable Sierra Leone endemic that rarely if ever reaches the aquarium trade. Its breeding biology is inferred from the standard Enteromius model: eggs hatch within one to two days at tropical temperatures, and larvae become free-swimming shortly thereafter, subsisting initially on their yolk sac before switching to small planktonic food. No nest, no bubble-nest, no mouthbrooding, and no guarding of any kind occurs.

In the aquarium

Enteromius bagbwensis is not known to be present in the aquarium hobby, and no husbandry accounts exist in the available literature or trade records. As a Vulnerable endemic of a small number of Sierra Leonean river systems, it is almost certainly absent from the commercial trade, and any collection of wild specimens would require appropriate scientific or conservation permits under Sierra Leonean national law and CITES frameworks for regulated wildlife.

Were it to be kept, the general requirements of West African stream barbs would apply: clean, well-filtered water with moderate to strong circulation, tropical temperatures, and a diet of varied small invertebrates and prepared foods. The species is likely best maintained in a species tank or with other small, peaceful West African river fishes. Its conservation status makes any ex-situ holding a matter for specialist institutions rather than hobbyists.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Enteromius bagbwensis as Vulnerable (VU), catalogued under assessment ID 182252. The species is a freshwater endemic restricted to three river drainages in Sierra Leone — the Jong, Sewa, and Bagbwe systems — giving it an extremely limited native range. Range-restricted West African freshwater endemics of this kind are inherently sensitive to local habitat change: deforestation of riparian zones, mining and agricultural runoff, and water extraction that alters the flow regime and chemistry of their streams.

Sierra Leone has experienced significant forest loss and watershed degradation, and the small-stream fish fauna of the Upper Guinea biodiversity hotspot is poorly inventoried relative to its actual diversity. Enteromius bagbwensis, known from a handful of museum specimens and historical survey records, may be more range-restricted in practice than the formal drainage records suggest. Targeted freshwater biodiversity surveys in Sierra Leone, combined with national protections for the Bagbwe and Sewa headwaters, would be the most direct conservation interventions for the species and its co-endemic fish community.
