Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius atromaculatus was described by John Treadwell Nichols and Ludlow Griscom in 1917, almost certainly from material collected in West Africa — the type locality is associated with the Guinea–Senegal region. The species epithet atromaculatus combines the Latin ater (black) and maculatus (spotted), referring to the dark spotting that characterises the species.
The genus Enteromius was long treated as a subgenus or synonym within the sprawling catch-all genus Barbus, and older literature may list this species as Barbus atromaculatus. Modern phylogenetic work and the corresponding revisions of African barb genera have progressively elevated Enteromius to full generic status, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) — the governing authority for valid names — records the current valid combination as Enteromius atromaculatus (Nichols & Griscom, 1917). The parenthetical authority signals the original description was made under a different genus.
Enteromius is one of the largest cyprinid genera in Africa, encompassing several hundred small to medium barbs distributed from West Africa to the Cape and east to the Horn. Most are stream-dwelling insectivores; E. atromaculatus belongs to a species cluster inhabiting the rivers of the Upper Guinea and Senegambia subregion.
Morphology
Enteromius atromaculatus is a small, slender barb reaching approximately 1.5–2 in in standard length — a typical size for small African stream barbs of its guild. The body is moderately compressed laterally, with the proportions of an active, mid-water shoaling fish. The species name references dark spots or blotches that mark the flanks or fins, giving a contrast against the paler base coloration characteristic of many Enteromius.
Detailed morphometric data for this species are sparse in the accessible literature. As with many small West African Enteromius described in the early twentieth century, the original description provides the principal record of fin counts, scale counts, and proportional measurements, and subsequent treatments have added limited additional data. The species is not known to be in the aquarium trade, so living coloration as observed in captivity has not been documented for a wide audience.
Habitat
Enteromius atromaculatus inhabits rivers and streams of the Guinea–Senegal hydrological region of West Africa. In this part of the continent, small barbs of the Enteromius assemblage are typical occupants of flowing reaches — rocky runs, riffles, and stream margins with moderate current — as well as seasonally flooded marginal habitats associated with the pronounced dry and wet seasons of the West African savanna and forest-savanna mosaic.
Water chemistry in West African coastal and sub-coastal river systems ranges from soft and mildly acidic in forested headwaters to harder and more neutral in open savanna reaches. Based on conditions typical for the region and FishBase data for related species, E. atromaculatus tolerates a pH of roughly 6.0–7.0 and temperatures in the range of 72–79 °F. It is not a blackwater specialist but rather a generalist of moderate-flow streams where dissolved oxygen is high.
Feeding
Like the majority of small Enteromius, E. atromaculatus is an opportunistic omnivore with a diet centred on small invertebrates. In flowing West African streams this means aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms, and zooplankton, supplemented with algal films, detritus, and any terrestrial invertebrates that fall onto the water surface.
The species forages actively through the water column and along the substrate in the manner typical of small stream barbs — a constant, searching movement rather than sit-and-wait predation. No specialised feeding apparatus or behaviour has been described for the species.
Mating
Enteromius atromaculatus reproduces in the manner universal among barbs: it is a non-guarding egg-scatterer with no parental involvement beyond the act of spawning itself. In West African streams, spawning is likely seasonal, timed to the onset of the rains when rising water levels, increasing flow, and improved food supply signal reproductive readiness.
Courtship follows the typical barb pattern: a ripe male drives a gravid female actively through fine-leaved vegetation, over gravel, or across root tangles, pressing close as eggs and milt are released together in brief bursts. No territory is established, no nest is constructed, and no pair bond persists. Several males may pursue the same female in sequence. Adults pay no attention to the eggs once scattered.
Breeding
Spawning in E. atromaculatus produces adhesive eggs that settle among fine-leaved plants, fibrous root masses, or gravel interstices where the current carries oxygenated water over them. The eggs receive no parental care and are at risk of predation — including from the spawning adults themselves — from the moment they are laid.
No aquarium breeding accounts appear to be documented in the accessible literature for this species. By analogy with closely related small West African Enteromius, eggs would be expected to hatch within one to two days at typical tropical temperatures, with larvae becoming free-swimming a few days thereafter. Fecundity in small barbs of this size class is modest, with a female producing hundreds rather than thousands of eggs per spawning event.
In the aquarium
Enteromius atromaculatus is not an established aquarium species and is essentially unknown in the hobby. It does not appear in the mainstream ornamental fish trade, and no cultivation or husbandry accounts have been published for a general audience. Its small size, insectivorous diet, and moderate-flow stream origins suggest it would require similar conditions to other small West African stream barbs — good filtration, steady current, soft to neutral water, and a diet of small live and frozen invertebrate foods.
For aquarists interested in West African stream fishes, better-documented congeners are more readily available. Should this species ever enter the trade or become the subject of captive study, standard small-barb husbandry with attention to water quality and shoaling conditions would be the appropriate starting point.
Conservation
Enteromius atromaculatus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no official conservation status — it is Not Evaluated (NE). Many small African stream fishes described in the early twentieth century remain in this category, having never attracted the attention needed to gather the population and range data required for a formal assessment.
The rivers and streams of the Guinea–Senegal region face ongoing pressure from agricultural land conversion, deforestation of riparian margins, seasonal water extraction, and periodic pollution. Small endemic stream barbs with restricted ranges are potentially vulnerable to local habitat degradation, though the true distribution and population size of E. atromaculatus are not well characterised in the published literature. Improved regional freshwater biodiversity surveys would be required before any meaningful conservation status could be assigned.
