Enteromius fasciolatus, the African banded barb, is a small cyprinid from the river systems of central-southern Africa — a slim, attractively marked fish described by Günther in 1868 from Fluilla, Angola, and long carried in the aquarium hobby under the name Barbus fasciolatus. It inhabits slow, heavily vegetated waters: the dark, humic-stained lagoons and floodplain pools of the Okavango and Kafue, the upper Congo headwaters, and the coastal rivers of Angola and Namibia, where it lives at the edge of submerged vegetation in warm, soft and mildly acidic water. Though small — adults seldom exceed 2.5 in — the species has a neat pattern of close-set dark bars over a pale body and is a peaceful, shoaling fish well-suited to planted community aquaria with water that reflects its Central African origins.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius fasciolatus was described by Albert Günther in 1868 in the seventh volume of his Catalogue of Fishes in the British Museum, from material collected at Fluilla in Angola — the type locality on record in the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS). The original combination was Barbus fasciolatus; the fish was subsequently placed in the expanded genus Barbus, under which it circulated in both the scientific and hobby literature for well over a century.

The Catalog of Fishes now recognises the valid combination as Enteromius fasciolatus (Günther, 1868), the parenthetical authority reflecting the move out of Günther's original genus. The genus Enteromius holds a large assemblage of African barbs previously lumped in Barbus sensu lato; its limits continue to be refined by molecular phylogenetic work. GBIF lists the species at family Cyprinidae, genus Enteromius, consistent with the current Catalog of Fishes placement. Aquarium literature and trade sources often still use the name Barbus fasciolatus, and both names may be encountered for the same fish.

Morphology

Enteromius fasciolatus is a slender, moderately compressed barb reaching approximately 2–2.5 in standard length, with FishBase recording a maximum of 2.5 in SL and SeriouslyFish citing a range of 2–2.5 in SL in wild specimens. The body is pale silvery or cream, marked with a series of narrow, close-set dark vertical bars that give the fish a distinctly banded, almost "fasciolate" appearance — the epithet directly describes this striping.

Sexual dimorphism is typical for a small African barb: males are slimmer and develop more intense colouration at breeding condition, while females become noticeably rounder and deeper-bodied when gravid. Fin colouration and precise bar count can vary across the broad range of the species.

Habitat

The species occupies slow-moving or near-still waters across a wide arc of central-southern Africa: the Cunene River system (Angola and Namibia), the Okavango Delta system (Angola and Botswana), the Kafue River (Zambia), Lake Kariba (Zambia and Zimbabwe), Lake Mweru (Zambia and the DRC), and streams of the upper Congo basin. Across this range it favours lake bays, floodplain lagoons, and rainforest or savanna streams with heavy emergent or submerged vegetation, where current is minimal.

Water in these habitats is frequently dark and humic-stained, soft, and mildly acidic. SeriouslyFish records a temperature window of 68–79 °F, a pH of 5.0–6.5, and a hardness range of approximately 18–215 ppm — the broad hardness span reflecting the varied substrates and seasonal hydrology across the range, from soft forest-stream conditions to slightly harder floodplain waters. The species is strongly associated with dense plant cover and high dissolved-oxygen levels.

Feeding

Enteromius fasciolatus is an omnivore. In the wild it picks small invertebrates, micro-organisms, algae and plant material from the substrate and from submerged vegetation — a generalist foraging strategy common among small African barbs in heavily vegetated, low-current habitats.

In the aquarium the species accepts a wide range of foods: good-quality flake and small pelleted diets, supplemented with live or frozen items such as bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp, and some vegetable matter or algae-enriched foods. Varied feeding supports colour and condition, and the species feeds readily without competing aggressively.

Mating

Like all barbs, Enteromius fasciolatus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest, no territory held beyond a brief courtship chase, and no parental bond. When fish are in breeding condition — typically triggered by warm, soft and slightly acidic water after a period of good feeding — a driving male pursues a gravid female through fine-leaved plants or over open substrate, pressing briefly alongside her as eggs and milt are released together.

No parental care follows the act of spawning. Adults show no recognition of their eggs or fry and will consume them readily if left together. Colour and activity intensify in both sexes during courtship, with males at their most vivid.

Breeding

Enteromius fasciolatus has been bred in aquaria for decades and is considered one of the more straightforward small African barbs to spawn. Standard practice uses a separate, shallow breeding tank with soft, slightly acidic water — SeriouslyFish recommends approximately 2–5°dH and pH 6.0–6.5, reflecting the species' natural water chemistry — furnished with fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop over a mesh base that allows eggs to fall out of the adults' reach.

Conditioning on live and frozen foods brings fish into spawning condition quickly. A female may deposit several hundred adhesive eggs in a session; the adults are removed afterward. Eggs hatch in under 48 hours at typical spawning temperatures, and the tiny larvae require infusoria or very fine commercial fry food initially, progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp as growth allows. The species' readiness to breed and its modest size make it a practical choice for hobbyists interested in African small-barb breeding.

In the aquarium

Enteromius fasciolatus is best kept as a shoal of six or more individuals, as the species is gregarious and settles more readily — and shows its best colour — in a group. A planted aquarium of moderate size with low to gentle flow, warm water (68–79 °F), soft to slightly hard water and a slightly acidic to neutral pH suits it well and reflects the floodplain and lagoon habitats of its Central African range. Dark substrate and floating plants to diffuse light can bring out the full depth of the banding pattern.

It is a peaceful species and compatible with other non-aggressive fishes of similar size. Tankmates from comparable water-chemistry requirements — other small African cyprinids, small tetras, or invertebrates tolerant of soft water — work well. The fish is active through the water column and will explore planted areas throughout the day, making it an engaging, low-maintenance occupant of a themed Central African setup.

Conservation

No completed IUCN Red List assessment retrievable from current sources assigns a definitive conservation category to Enteromius fasciolatus; the cache records a prior assessment associated with the names Marshall, B., Moelants, T. and Tweddle, D. but the status could not be confirmed. The species has a broad distribution across multiple large river and lake systems — the Okavango, Kafue, Lake Kariba, Lake Mweru, Cunene, and upper Congo — which, taken together, suggests it is not immediately threatened at a range-wide level.

At a local scale the freshwater habitats it depends on — floodplain lagoons, vegetated lake bays, and slow forest streams — are subject to increasing pressure from agricultural water extraction, wetland drainage, and pollution in parts of its range. The Okavango Delta in particular faces long-term uncertainty from upstream water use in Angola. As with many broadly distributed Central African cyprinids, targeted survey data on population trends remain sparse.
