Enteromius thamalakanensis is a small African barb, reaching about 2 in in total length, native to the river systems of southern-central Africa — the Kunene, upper Zambezi, and Okavango basins, and the Kwilu River in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It inhabits the well-vegetated margins of rivers, lagoons, floodplain pools, and backwaters across a broad tropical band from roughly 11°S to 21°S, and enters the aquarium trade to a limited degree. Described by Fowler in 1935 under the old genus Barbus, it now sits in Enteromius, the expansive African barb genus that has absorbed much of the former Barbus complex across sub-Saharan Africa.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius thamalakanensis was described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1935, originally placed in the genus Barbus — then the near-universal catch-all for African and Asian small barbs. The species epithet thamalakanensis refers to the Thamalakane River, a channel of the Okavango system in Botswana, which is part of its type locality region. Older literature and some databases record the combination as Barbus thamalakanensis (Fowler, 1935), the parenthetical authority reflecting the subsequent generic transfer.

The Catalog of Fishes places the species in Enteromius, a large and still-consolidating African genus that has absorbed hundreds of Barbus-group species as the African barb complex has been revised. The genus Enteromius is not a tight monophyletic unit in the way some of the re-erected Asian genera are, and the taxonomy of many of its members remains in flux; thamalakanensis is currently treated as a valid species within it. FishBase resolves the current valid name as Enteromius thamalakanensis (Fowler, 1935).

Morphology

Enteromius thamalakanensis is a small, slender barb with a maximum recorded total length of 2 in per FishBase. Like most small African Enteromius it has the streamlined, fusiform build suited to life in flowing and still marginal waters — not as deep-bodied as some ornamental Asian barbs, but compact and well-proportioned for maneuvering through vegetation and backwater debris.

Detailed morphological data are sparse in the accessible literature. The species belongs to a group of small, lightly pigmented African barbs typical of the Okavango and Zambezi drainages, where several similarly-sized Enteromius coexist. Specific coloration, scale counts, and meristic data are not well-documented in sources available to the hobby; the species is most reliably identified by its basin of origin combined with reference to the original description and specialist African ichthyology literature.

Habitat

This species occupies the well-vegetated margins of rivers, lagoons, floodplain pools, and backwaters across its southern African range. FishBase characterizes it as benthopelagic — spending time both near the bottom and in open water — and tropical, distributed between approximately 11°S and 21°S across the Kunene, upper Zambezi, Okavango, and Kwilu drainages.

The Okavango system, one of its core habitats, is a vast inland delta and floodplain mosaic in Botswana, with clear, relatively warm water that rises and spreads seasonally across the Kalahari sand. Water chemistry in these systems is typically soft to moderately hard and near-neutral, reflecting the sandy substrates and semi-arid catchment. Vegetation — submerged and emergent macrophytes — is abundant along the margins where this small barb is most commonly encountered. The Kwilu River in the DRC represents the northernmost extension of its documented range, indicating tolerance of more forested-savanna transitional habitats.

Feeding

FishBase records Enteromius thamalakanensis as feeding on insects and periphyton — algae and associated organic material scraped or browsed from submerged surfaces. This is consistent with the generalist omnivory typical of small Enteromius across sub-Saharan Africa, where individuals exploit whatever small invertebrates and plant-based food are seasonally abundant in their marginal and floodplain habitats.

In the aquarium, small Enteromius of this type accept a wide range of standard foods: quality micro-pellets and flakes, supplemented with live or frozen items such as small bloodworm, brine shrimp nauplii, and daphnia. Vegetable matter and algae-based foods round out the diet and maintain condition.

Mating

Like all barbs, Enteromius thamalakanensis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no pair bond, no nest, and no parental care of any kind. In the wild, spawning appears to be associated with the summer rainy season, when rising floodwaters warm the shallows and stimulate fish into condition. A driving male pursues a gravid female through submerged vegetation or over the substrate, the pair pressing briefly together as eggs and milt are released simultaneously.

Eggs are adhesive and settle among plants or onto the bottom after scattering. Adults do not guard the spawn and will consume eggs and larvae given the opportunity. Competition among males at spawning time may produce brief intensification of colour and activity, but no territorial defense persists beyond the act of spawning itself.

Breeding

FishBase notes that this species spawns on submerged vegetation in summer, consistent with the seasonal floodplain cycle of its Okavango and Zambezi habitats. Like other small African barbs, it is an egg-scatterer that deposits adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or over gravel and debris, with no subsequent parental care — adults should be removed after spawning if eggs are to be raised.

Specific aquarium-breeding accounts for Enteromius thamalakanensis are sparse. By analogy with other small Enteromius, a shallow spawning setup with soft to moderately hard, warm water, fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, and a bottom layer that protects eggs from the adults is the standard approach. Eggs hatch within one to two days at tropical temperatures, and larvae become free-swimming within a few further days, at which point infusoria and then nauplii are appropriate first foods.

In the aquarium

Enteromius thamalakanensis has some presence in the aquarium trade, noted by FishBase as having commercial aquarium value. As a small, active barb from the vegetated margins of southern African river systems, it suits a planted aquarium with open swimming space, gentle to moderate flow, and water in the warm tropical range. A group of at least six individuals is preferable, as small barbs of this kind are shoaling fish that display more naturally and with less nervous behaviour when kept together.

Detailed hobbyist accounts of keeping this species are limited. Care requirements can be approximated from those of similarly-sized African Enteromius: a varied diet of small live, frozen, and prepared foods; stable, warm water; and planted cover along the margins of the tank to replicate its natural habitat. It is unlikely to trouble anything it cannot fit in its mouth and should be compatible with other peaceful fish of comparable size.

Conservation

Enteromius thamalakanensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the FishBase record citing a 2007 assessment date. Its broad distribution across multiple large river systems — the Kunene, upper Zambezi, Okavango, and Kwilu — means it is not confined to a single vulnerable basin, and there is no evidence of major range-wide population decline.

The Okavango Delta, one of the species' core habitats, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and subject to ongoing conservation attention, though its upper catchment in Angola faces pressures from land clearance and water extraction. Broader threats to southern African freshwater fish include agricultural runoff, altered flow regimes from damming and abstraction, and pollution in the more accessible lowland reaches. For a widespread, adaptable small barb such as this one, these pressures are background concerns rather than acute threats at present.
