The pygmy lampeye is one of the smallest killlifishes in the genus Lacustricola, reaching just 1 in standard length — dwarfing even its near relatives in the Lacustricola hutereaui complex from which it was formally separated only in 2021. A non-annual schooling egg-layer of the Okavango basin and upper Zambezi system, it inhabits swampy, vegetated margins of slow-moving or still water across Angola, Botswana, Zambia, and Namibia, where males flash a blue-green iridescent patch above the eye — the 'lampeye' hallmark — alongside boldly banded dorsal, anal, and caudal fins. Despite its small size and wide basin range, it has not yet been assessed by the IUCN.

Taxonomy & naming

Lacustricola pygmaeus was formally described by De Bragança, Skelton, Bills, Tweddle & Chakona in 2021, published in Ichthyology & Herpetology 109(1): 123–137. The description resolved long-standing confusion within the Lacustricola hutereaui species complex, a group of small southern and central African lampeyes that share superficially similar colouration and fin patterning. Lacustricola pygmaeus is distinguished from its relatives by a combination of characters: a pointed premaxilla, banded fins in adult males, faint caudal banding, a rounded caudal fin in males, and the blue-green iridescent colouration restricted to the scale-margin area rather than covering a broader region. It is identified in FishBase (species ID 69821) as the smallest member of the L. hutereaui complex.

The genus Lacustricola belongs to the family Procatopodidae, the African lampeyes, a clade of small, schooling, non-annual killifishes distributed across sub-Saharan Africa. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) treats the valid name as Lacustricola pygmaeus De Bragança et al. 2021. The authority is not parenthesised because the species was described directly in Lacustricola rather than transferred from another genus. American Killifish Association records document this species under collection codes from seven locations including Etsha (Botswana), Maue Okavango (Angola), Mayau River (Zambia), Okavango (Angola), Sepopa (Botswana), and Xakanaxa Lagoon in the Okavango Delta (Botswana); it has also been featured in the Journal of the American Killifish Association (JAKA) across multiple volumes from 1970 to 2025, though some early JAKA records predate the formal description and may have been attributed to related taxa in the complex.

Morphology

Lacustricola pygmaeus is a slender, laterally compressed fish reaching a maximum of 1 in standard length (SL), making it one of the smallest lampeyes recorded from the Okavango-Zambezi system. FishBase records a dorsal fin of 10–12 soft rays and an anal fin of 12–15 soft rays, ray counts consistent with other members of the genus. The body profile is characteristic of procatopodid lampeyes: slim, elongate, with a slightly upturned mouth well suited to surface-feeding.

Sexual dichromatism is pronounced. Males carry boldly banded dorsal, anal, and caudal fins, with faint banding also present on the caudal fin. The defining feature of the lampeyes — the bright blue-green iridescent light-organ patch situated above the eye — is visible in males; in Lacustricola pygmaeus this iridescence is restricted to the scale-margin area. Females lack the fin banding and iridescent patch, showing a plainer, more uniformly coloured appearance typical of female procatopodids.

Habitat

The pygmy lampeye is a swamp-dwelling, non-riverine species associated with slow-moving or still water in the Okavango-Zambezi drainage. FishBase records its distribution across the Cuito, Cuanavale, and Okavango rivers, the Cuando and upper Zambezi tributaries in Angola and Zambia, the Okavango Delta and Chobe River in Botswana and Namibia, and the Barotse floodplains of Zambia, as well as the Bukalo Channel in Namibia. AKA collection records confirm seven specific localities including the Xakanaxa Lagoon in the Okavango Delta, Etsha and Sepopa in Botswana, and Maue and Okavango locations in Angola.

This is a fish of vegetated floodplain margins, papyrus swamps, and oxbow lagoons — the kind of shallow, densely planted, seasonally fluctuating wetland habitats that characterise the Okavango basin. Water in the Okavango system is generally warm, slightly acidic to neutral, and low in dissolved solids, drawn from Angolan highlands rainfall and filtered through floodplain soils before spreading into the delta. Being non-annual, Lacustricola pygmaeus requires permanent or semi-permanent water; it does not inhabit temporary pools that dry completely between rains.

Feeding

Like other lampeyes of the genus Lacustricola, the pygmy lampeye is a micro-predator feeding primarily on small invertebrates. Its upturned mouth is adapted for surface and near-surface foraging, where it picks off zooplankton, insect larvae, small aquatic insects, and other small invertebrates from the water column and film. In the densely vegetated swamp margins it inhabits, chironomid (midge) larvae, microcrustaceans such as daphnia and copepods, and insect pupae likely form the bulk of the diet.

In the aquarium the species accepts commercially available micro-foods readily: live or frozen daphnia, cyclops, artemia nauplii, and micro-worms are all suitable. Its very small adult size (1 in SL) means prey items must be appropriately tiny; adult brine shrimp may be marginal, and nauplii or small cyclops are preferable for routine feeding. Offering a varied diet helps maintain the males' colour intensity.

Mating

Lacustricola pygmaeus is a non-annual lampeye that spawns continuously in permanent water rather than producing diapausing eggs tied to a wet-dry seasonal cycle. Males court females with displays that highlight their banded fins and the iridescent blue-green lampeye patch — the reflective organ functions as a visual signal in the species' schooling social context, and dominant males likely intensify display behaviour when competing for access to females.

As with most procatopodid lampeyes, spawning is a protracted, low-output process rather than a single mass-release event: small numbers of adhesive eggs are deposited at intervals among fine-leaved aquatic plants, roots, or other fibrous structures at the water's surface or in the upper water column. This scatter-and-forget strategy across many small batches disperses risk and requires no parental investment beyond the act of spawning itself. Males do not guard territories or eggs.

Breeding

Breeding in captivity follows the typical procatopodid lampeye pattern. A well-planted aquarium with a layer of fine-leaved floating or submerged vegetation — Java moss, hornwort, or similar — gives females cover and provides the fibrous substrate onto which adhesive eggs are deposited. A group of several females to each male reduces harassment. Because the species produces only a few eggs per day over an extended period rather than spawning en masse, the most productive method is to leave the spawning group in a planted tank and harvest fry as they appear, or to transfer egg-laden moss to a separate rearing container.

Eggs hatch in approximately 10–14 days at warm tropical temperatures (around 75–79 °F, consistent with the Okavango basin's warm-season water temperatures). Fry are minute at hatching and require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food initially, graduating to artemia nauplii and micro-worms within one to two weeks. Growth is slow relative to annual killifish but the species is straightforward to breed given clean, warm, stable water and appropriate fine vegetation.

In the aquarium

The pygmy lampeye is a specialist fish suited to small, dedicated setups. At 1 in maximum SL it is one of the tiniest killies available in the hobby, making it an ideal candidate for nano or pico aquaria — tanks of 5.5–10 US gal are generous for a group. It should be kept in a species-only or near-species arrangement alongside other micro-fish of similar size; most commonly kept aquarium fish will outcompete it for food or stress it through constant motion.

A softly lit, heavily planted aquarium with dark substrate shows the males' iridescent lampeye patch and fin banding to best advantage. Water conditions consistent with the Okavango basin — warm (75–81 °F), slightly soft to neutral (pH 6.5–7.5), low to moderate hardness — suit the species well. Gentle surface-level filtration (a sponge filter is ideal) provides oxygenation without creating currents that overwhelm such small fish. The AKA has documented this species under collection codes from Botswana, Angola, and Zambia, and hobbyist strains in circulation may carry location data useful for matching it with appropriate water parameters. Like all lampeyes it rewards patience: its appeal lies in the collective shimmer of a small school and the elegant, purposeful display behaviour of courting males.

Conservation

Lacustricola pygmaeus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; it carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). The species was only formally described in 2021, and the absence of an assessment reflects the typical lag between formal description and evaluation rather than any implication of security. Its known range spans the Okavango-Zambezi system across Angola, Botswana, Zambia, and Namibia — a basin that retains substantial areas of intact wetland habitat, notably the Okavango Delta (a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Ramsar wetland).

Despite its broad basin footprint, the species' association with swampy, vegetated permanent-water margins means it is sensitive to the same pressures affecting other Okavango wetland species: altered flood regimes, upstream water extraction for irrigation, wetland drainage for agriculture, and degradation of fringing vegetation. Climate variability is an increasing concern for the Okavango system, where rainfall patterns in the Angolan highlands drive the annual flood pulse on which floodplain species depend. As a newly described species from what is presumed to be a broader complex of small lampeyes, future taxonomic work may also refine the geographic boundaries of this taxon, potentially revealing a narrower range than currently attributed to it.
