Enteromius foutensis is a small West African stream barb endemic to the coastal drainages of the Fouta Djallon highlands, described in 1988 from the Little Scarcies River system straddling Guinea and Sierra Leone. A headwater specialist of the Upper Guinea forest-stream zone, it belongs to a wider species complex whose true diversity has only recently come into focus: molecular and morphological work published in 2019 identified at least two additional candidate species within what had been treated as a single taxon, one from the Konkouré basin and another from the upper Senegal–Gambia drainages. This hidden diversity makes the conservation status of each lineage harder to evaluate and more pressing — E. foutensis in the strict sense is currently assessed as Endangered by the IUCN, reflecting its narrow range and the ongoing pressures on Upper Guinea freshwater habitats.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius foutensis was described in 1988 by Lévêque, Teugels and Thys van den Audenaerde, originally under the genus Barbus — the catch-all that once held virtually all African and Eurasian barbs. It was long carried in the literature as Barbus foutensis, and that combination still appears in older checklists. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) now places the species in Enteromius, the genus used for a large and taxonomically complex assemblage of African barbs, and the parenthetical authority marks the move out of the original genus. FishBase records the species under FishBase ID 5325.

A 2019 study in Zoologica Scripta (Schmidt, Dillon, Kuhn, Bart and Pezold) examined the E. foutensis complex using combined molecular and morphological data and found that the taxon as broadly conceived conceals at least three divergent lineages. Enteromius foutensis sensu stricto is confined to the Little Scarcies drainage; a second candidate species occupies the Konkouré River basin to the north; and a third lineage occurs in the upper Senegal and Gambia drainages. The taxonomic consequences of those findings are still being resolved, but the study has significant conservation implications because each lineage has a more restricted range than the aggregate E. foutensis had appeared to hold.

Morphology

Enteromius foutensis is a small barb typical of the genus in general body plan — moderately elongate, laterally compressed, with the short snout and paired barbels characteristic of African Enteromius. As with most members of the genus, maximum body size is modest; FishBase places the species in the size class typical of small African stream barbs, well under 8 in total length.

Detailed meristic and pigmentation data for E. foutensis are not widely reported in the secondary literature accessible outside specialist ichthyological monographs. The species' original description and the 2019 Zoologica Scripta morphological analysis are the primary sources for precise counts and colour pattern details. The existence of multiple cryptic lineages within what was considered a single species suggests that subtle but consistent morphological differences between populations exist, even if they are not obvious to the casual observer.

Habitat

Enteromius foutensis occupies headwater streams of the Fouta Djallon highlands, a massif in Guinea that is the source of several major West African rivers. Its core range in the strict sense covers the Little Scarcies River drainage, a coastal river system flowing through Guinea and Sierra Leone into the Atlantic. The Upper Guinea freshwater ecoregion to which this drainage belongs is characterised by coastal forest and forest-savanna transition zones, with streams that are typically swift, clear and soft to moderately acidic.

Stream waters in this part of Upper Guinea are generally warm (broadly 72–79 °F), and the Upper Guinea ecoregion's forest-stream habitats tend toward circumneutral to mildly acidic conditions (approximately pH 6.0–7.0), though precise water-chemistry records for E. foutensis localities are sparse in the accessible literature. The species is described as a headwater specialist, favouring swift-running reaches with clear water — a profile consistent with sensitivity to siltation and reduced flow that makes land-use change in the catchment a direct threat.

Feeding

Specific dietary data for Enteromius foutensis in the wild are not documented in the secondary sources available. African stream barbs of the genus Enteromius are broadly omnivorous, exploiting the invertebrate and algal resources of fast-flowing stream environments — small aquatic insects, crustaceans, aufwuchs and organic detritus are typical components of the diet in related headwater species.

In captivity, where the species is rarely seen in the trade, small omnivorous barbs of this type accept live, frozen and prepared foods without difficulty, including small invertebrates and vegetable supplement. The feeding ecology specific to E. foutensis remains a gap in the published record.

Mating

Like all barbs, Enteromius foutensis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is constructed, no territory is held for longer than the act of spawning itself, and neither parent guards eggs or fry. Courtship follows the barb pattern: a driving male pursues a gravid female through the water column, the pair pressing together briefly to release eggs and milt in simultaneous bursts over the substrate or among vegetation.

Specific mating observations for E. foutensis in the wild or in captivity are absent from the published record. The reproductive seasonality of stream barbs in the Upper Guinea highlands is likely tied to rainfall and flood pulse, with peak spawning activity corresponding to rising water levels during the wet season, a pattern documented in comparable West African stream species.

Breeding

Enteromius foutensis has not been reported in the ornamental fish trade, and captive breeding accounts are essentially absent from the accessible literature. Biologically, the species follows the barb archetype: eggs are adhesive and scattered over the substrate or among fine vegetation, after which both parents ignore the spawn entirely. Adults are likely to consume eggs if they remain within reach, as is typical of small barbs.

The broader reproductive ecology of headwater barbs in the Fouta Djallon region is poorly studied. Breeding seasonality is assumed to be linked to the annual rainfall cycle, with spawning triggered by the onset of the rainy season and the associated rise in stream level and temperature. No captive breeding protocol has been documented for this species.

In the aquarium

Enteromius foutensis is not established in the ornamental fish trade and is effectively unknown in the hobby. There are no documented aquarium maintenance records for the species. Its small size and headwater stream origin suggest that, like comparable African stream barbs, it would require clean, well-oxygenated water with moderate flow, soft to moderately hard conditions, and temperatures in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius.

Given the species' Endangered status and its restricted wild range, collection for the aquarium trade is not an appropriate prospect without robust population assessments. The existence of multiple cryptic lineages within the E. foutensis complex, revealed only recently, underscores how incompletely known this fish remains.

Conservation

Enteromius foutensis is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, reflecting its restricted range within the Upper Guinea freshwater ecoregion and the ongoing degradation of that region's forest stream habitats. The Upper Guinea biodiversity hotspot faces substantial pressure from deforestation, agricultural expansion, artisanal mining and associated siltation of headwater streams — all of which directly affect small-bodied, habitat-sensitive stream barbs.

The 2019 Zoologica Scripta study that identified multiple cryptic lineages within the E. foutensis complex complicates the conservation picture considerably. If at least two additional candidate species are ultimately formalised, each will have a range considerably smaller than the aggregate E. foutensis was thought to hold, and each may warrant its own threat assessment. Enteromius foutensis in the strict sense, limited to the Little Scarcies drainage, would in that scenario be among the more restricted West African barbs known to science. Targeted field surveys and formal taxonomic resolution of the complex are the most pressing conservation needs.
