Enteromius liberiensis was described in 1894 by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner under the original genus Barbus, the once-vast hold-all genus into which virtually all Old World small barbs were placed. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid current combination as Enteromius liberiensis (Steindachner, 1894), with the parenthetical authority indicating transfer out of Steindachner's original genus.
The genus Enteromius was resurrected and broadly applied to the African barb radiation following revisionary work on the old Barbus sensu lato complex. Earlier literature may refer to this species as Barbus liberiensis, and some regional catalogues have carried it under that combination. The genus name Enteromius is not to be confused with the Asian genus Puntius or its segregates; the two lineages represent independent radiations on their respective continents.
The species epithet liberiensis is a straightforward Latinised toponym meaning "of Liberia," referring to the type locality in present-day Liberia on the West African coast. No subspecies or recognised variants are known.
Morphology
Enteromius liberiensis is a small cyprinid. FishBase records a maximum standard length in the range of approximately 2–2.5 in SL, placing it among the smaller members of the West African Enteromius fauna. Like most of its relatives it is a slender to moderately deep-bodied barb with a typical cyprinid body plan: a subterminal mouth equipped with small lips suited to picking at substrate and fine organic material, a single dorsal fin, paired pectoral and pelvic fins, and a forked caudal fin.
Detailed published morphometric and colouration data for this species are sparse in the accessible literature. The general pattern of small West African forest-stream Enteromius is a silvery to pale-golden body, frequently with scattered dark pigmentation or a lateral stripe, and reddish or orange-tinted unpaired fins. Until a thorough revisionary account is published, precise meristic counts and colouration should be treated as data sparse.
Sexual dimorphism, if present, likely follows the pattern of congeners: gravid females becoming noticeably deeper-bodied and more rotund than males.
Habitat
The species is native to the freshwater drainages of Liberia and adjacent coastal West Africa — a region encompassing rivers draining the Upper Guinea Forests biodiversity hotspot. These are predominantly lowland forest rivers and their tributaries: warm, typically soft or moderately mineralised waters running through dense riparian forest and savanna-forest mosaic, with sandy or muddy substrates and seasonal flood pulses that shape fish reproduction.
FishBase and GBIF occurrence data suggest a distribution extending across Liberian river basins and potentially into neighbouring Guinea and Sierra Leone, consistent with the widespread pattern of many Guinea forest endemics whose ranges straddle political borders along shared watershed divides. Water temperatures in these lowland West African rivers typically range from around 72–82 °F through the annual cycle, with the soft, mildly acidic to near-neutral chemistry characteristic of forest-stream habitats.
The species is benthopelagic in habit, associated with stream margins, shallow floodplain pools, and the slower margins of river channels, where it likely schools with congeners and other small cyprinids.
Feeding
Enteromius liberiensis is presumed to be a generalised omnivore in the manner of most small West African Enteromius. The diet in the wild likely encompasses small aquatic invertebrates — chironomid larvae, microcrustaceans, and worms — alongside algae, diatoms, and fine organic detritus picked from the substrate and water column.
Small barbs of the Guinea forest zone are opportunistic grazers and foragers, moving through shallow marginal zones and exploiting whatever small food items are seasonally abundant. Mating

Courtship follows the typical cyprinid pattern: one or more males pursue a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, pressing against her flanks as eggs and milt are released simultaneously into open water or among plants and roots. The adhesive eggs settle among vegetation or onto substrate, after which the adults take no further interest in them.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Enteromius liberiensis have been located in the accessible hobbyist or scientific literature; the species is not established in the aquarium trade and has not been bred under controlled conditions in any documented account. Based on the biology of closely related West African Enteromius, spawning in the wild is likely seasonal, tied to the onset of the annual flood pulse.
In any natural spawning event, adhesive eggs are scattered over fine-leaved vegetation, root mats, or gravel, and are abandoned immediately after fertilisation. There is no parental care — adults that remain in the vicinity represent a predation risk to the eggs. Larvae hatch within one to two days at tropical temperatures and pass through a brief yolk-sac stage before becoming free-swimming fry that feed on zooplankton and microorganisms.
In the aquarium
Enteromius liberiensis has no established presence in the aquarium hobby and is not available through normal trade channels. It is a wild species known primarily from natural history collections and field surveys. As such, no husbandry recommendations based on aquarium experience exist for this particular species.
For aquarists interested in West African small barbs, the general care requirements of the Enteromius clade apply as a baseline: a spacious, well-filtered aquarium with soft to moderately hard, near-neutral to slightly acidic water at tropical temperatures (72–81 °F), generous swimming space, and a varied omnivorous diet including live and frozen invertebrates alongside quality dried foods. The species should be kept in a shoal rather than singly.
Conservation
Enteromius liberiensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; it carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). This is typical of many small West African riverine endemics, which are not sufficiently surveyed or documented to support a formal threat assessment, rather than an indication that the species is necessarily secure.
The Upper Guinea Forest zone — the primary habitat of this species — is one of the most threatened freshwater ecosystems in Africa. Decades of deforestation, agricultural expansion, artisanal and industrial mining (particularly alluvial gold and diamond mining), dam construction, and water pollution have severely degraded river systems across Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone. Species with restricted ranges or dependence on intact forest-stream habitats are particularly vulnerable. A formal assessment and updated distributional survey of E. liberiensis would be a worthwhile contribution to regional freshwater conservation.
