Enteromius perince is a small, data-sparse African barb described by the German naturalist Eduard Rüppell in 1835 from West Africa. Reaching around 1.5–2 in standard length, it inhabits the small forest streams and savanna-forest transition tributaries of the upper Guinea region — rivers draining through Guinea, Sierra Leone, and possibly Liberia — where it picks at invertebrates and organic material over soft substrates. Like all barbs it is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. The species is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade and has not been formally assessed for the IUCN Red List, leaving it one of many small West African cyprinids that remains poorly known to science and collectors alike.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius perince was described by Eduard Rüppell in 1835, originally placed in the large, historically catch-all genus Barbus. For much of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries it was carried as Barbus perince, a combination reflected in older ichthyological collections and catalogues. Molecular and morphological work in the early 2000s — associated with the Paugy and Teugels lineage analyses of African cyprinids — reassigned the species to the genus Enteromius, the current valid placement recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS).

The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for valid names used on this site, and the correct current combination is Enteromius perince (Rüppell, 1835). The parenthetical authority signals that Rüppell described the species under a genus other than Enteromius. Detailed synonymy and the precise reference to Rüppell's original description reside in Eschmeyer's catalogue; the species remains poorly represented in the modern revisionary literature, and its exact phylogenetic position within Enteromius has not been resolved by comprehensive molecular analysis.

Morphology

Enteromius perince is a small, slender barb with the typical fusiform body plan of the genus — moderately compressed laterally, with a pointed snout and small, subterminal mouth suited to picking food from fine substrates and vegetation. Feeding

Enteromius perince is an omnivore, feeding on the small invertebrates, algae, and organic detritus typical of small West African stream barbs in this size class. In its forest-transition habitat it likely exploits a combination of aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, algal films scraped from surfaces, and particulate organic matter drifted or settled on the substrate.

Detailed dietary studies have not been published for this species. Analogy with similar-sized Enteromius from the upper Guinea and coastal West African drainages — where gut-content analyses occasionally appear in regional ichthyological surveys — suggests a flexible, opportunistic feeding strategy that tracks seasonal availability of invertebrate prey and plant material.

Mating

Enteromius perince, in common with all barbs, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest, no bubble-nest, no mouthbrooding, and no parental care of eggs or fry. Courtship consists of a driving male pursuing a gravid female through fine-leaved plants or over the substrate, and the pair releases eggs and milt together in brief, repeated contacts.

Breeding

The adhesive eggs are deposited among fine-leaved vegetation, root tangles, or over fine substrate during spawning, after which adults take no further interest — and may readily consume any eggs or larvae they encounter.

No captive-breeding accounts for this species appear in the hobby literature; it is not established in the aquarium trade and has not been kept or bred by hobbyists in any documented way. General barb breeding technique — a separate shallow tank with soft, slightly acidic water, fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, and removal of adults after spawning — would be the appropriate starting point if the fish were ever obtained. Egg and larval development times are unknown but would be expected to fall within the range typical of small tropical Enteromius, broadly one to three days for hatching and a few more days to free-swimming.

In the aquarium

Enteromius perince is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense. It does not appear in the hobby trade, and no dedicated care accounts exist in English-language hobby sources. Its small size — around 1.5–2 in — and presumed adaptation to soft, mildly acidic, warm West African forest streams suggest that if it were available, conditions broadly suitable for other small upper-Guinea barbs and West African stream fish would apply: water in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius, slightly soft and acidic, with good filtration and gentle flow.

For now the species belongs to a large category of small African cyprinids that are collected only for scientific purposes and remain unknown to the wider aquarium-keeping community. Any future interest in the species would need to be informed by field collection and careful quarantine work, given the absence of an established captive population.

Conservation

Enteromius perince has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). As a small, geographically restricted barb from the upper Guinea region — one of the planet's recognised freshwater biodiversity hotspots and simultaneously one of the most threatened — it is potentially vulnerable to the same pressures bearing on much of the West African forest-zone fish fauna: deforestation and agricultural conversion of catchments in Guinea and Sierra Leone, small-dam construction on headwater streams, water extraction, and sedimentation from cleared slopes.

The Guinea Highlands and surrounding lowland drainages have been subject to intensifying land-use pressure over recent decades, and many small, range-restricted stream fish in the region are thought to be declining without ever having been formally assessed. Whether Enteromius perince's range is broad enough to buffer it against these pressures is unknown. Its apparent rarity in collections and the absence of any hobby presence suggest that targeted survey work would be needed before any meaningful conservation status could be assigned.
