Labeobarbus brauni was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1935. The species is placed in the genus Labeobarbus, which accommodates many of the large African barbs — commonly called yellowfish or large river barbs — within the subfamily Torinae. The ETYFish Project confirms its assignment to Torinae and notes its chiselmouth morphology with a keratinised cutting edge on the lower jaw, a trait shared across many members of this lineage.
The old genus Barbus was formerly used as a vast catch-all for African and Eurasian barbs, and earlier literature may refer to this fish as Barbus brauni. The current placement in Labeobarbus reflects the progressive revision of African cyprinid genera as molecular and morphological work has clarified their relationships.
