Taxonomy & naming
Labeobarbus dartevellei was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1945. The species epithet honours Edmond Dartevelle, a Belgian naturalist and geologist who worked extensively in the Belgian Congo during the mid-twentieth century and contributed specimens and data to European museum collections. The authority is written in parentheses — (Poll, 1945) — because the species was originally placed in a genus other than the one it currently occupies.
The genus Labeobarbus is a large assemblage of African large-bodied barbs in the family Cyprinidae, grouped informally with the yellowfish and related forms. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the governing authority for the current valid combination. FishBase records the species under FishBase ID 11344, confirming its placement in Labeobarbus. No synonyms or subsequent revisions of this species are noted in the available literature, and the taxonomic record remains sparse given the absence of additional specimens.
Morphology
Morphological data for Labeobarbus dartevellei is limited to what can be inferred from the original description and the type specimen. As a member of Labeobarbus it would be expected to share the deep, robust body plan characteristic of large African barbs — a laterally compressed form with well-developed scales, a terminal or subterminal mouth, and the paired lips and rostral cap typical of the genus.
No published accounts of colouration, fin formulae, or secondary sexual characters are available beyond what Poll recorded at description. The paucity of specimens means that no population-level variation, size range, or sexual dimorphism data can be reported with confidence. Size estimates cannot be stated reliably from available sources; the species is here treated as data sparse on that point.
Habitat
The type locality places Labeobarbus dartevellei within the Democratic Republic of Congo, most likely in the Congo River drainage. Related Labeobarbus species in the Upper Congo system, including the Luhoho basin and adjacent highland rivers, tend to occupy fast-flowing, well-oxygenated river reaches — often over rock, gravel, or coarse substrate — consistent with the ecology of large African cyprinids more broadly.
No direct habitat data for L. dartevellei is available from the literature. The Habitat/Geographic Research source in the pre-crawl cache notes that Congo Basin Labeobarbus studies exist for related species in the Luhoho basin, suggesting the Upper Congo watershed as a plausible frame of reference, but this cannot be attributed specifically to this species. Water temperature, pH, and chemistry preferences are unknown.
Feeding
No feeding observations or gut-content data have been published for Labeobarbus dartevellei. Large African barbs in the genus Labeobarbus are generally omnivorous to detritivorous, feeding on algae, plant material, invertebrates, and organic detritus depending on what their river environment provides. Many species in the genus are also known to take small fish and crustaceans when available.
Without specimens from which dietary data could be obtained, any feeding characterisation for this species is extrapolation from congeners. It is reasonable to assume a similar broad opportunism, but this remains inference rather than documented fact.
Mating
No reproductive observations exist for Labeobarbus dartevellei in the wild or in captivity. Like all barbs, it is expected to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. In large river barbs and African cyprinids of this size class, spawning is typically seasonal, often linked to rainfall and river-level changes that trigger upstream migrations to gravel spawning grounds. Males pursue gravid females, and eggs and milt are released together over the substrate with no pair bond formed.
There is no nest construction, no territory defence beyond transient courtship pursuit, and no parental investment of any kind. These traits are universal across Labeobarbus and the wider barb lineage.
Breeding
Labeobarbus dartevellei has never been bred in captivity, and no data on fecundity, egg size, incubation period, or larval development exists in the published literature. Large river barbs in this genus are broadcast spawners that produce adhesive or semi-buoyant eggs scattered over gravel or rocky substrate, with adults providing no care. Eggs and larvae are left to develop unattended; in many large river species the fry are carried downstream by current and develop in quieter marginal water before recruiting back to adult habitat.
The species' absence from the trade and from any subsequent field surveys means that captive breeding has never been attempted.
In the aquarium
Labeobarbus dartevellei has no presence in the aquarium hobby and has not been kept or traded. Given that it is known only from a single historical type specimen and has not been collected since 1945, it is effectively unavailable to aquarists. Large African barbs of the genus Labeobarbus are rarely kept as aquarium fish under any circumstances: as adults they reach sizes that require very large, purpose-built facilities and riverine flow conditions.
No husbandry recommendations can be made for this species. Any keeper who somehow obtained specimens would be dealing with a fish of conservation significance whose captive maintenance should be conducted in consultation with relevant authorities.
Conservation
Labeobarbus dartevellei is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List (assessment ID 63274). The Data Deficient listing reflects the core problem: the species is known only from its type specimen collected in 1945, and no subsequent field records have confirmed its continued existence. Whether this reflects genuine rarity, a very restricted range in an under-surveyed part of the Congo Basin, or extinction cannot be determined from available data.
The Congo River drainage faces significant and ongoing pressures — artisanal and commercial fishing, habitat modification from mining and deforestation, and limited ichthyological survey coverage in remote stretches. A species known only from one historic collection sits in an extremely vulnerable position: it cannot be managed or protected because its location, population size, and ecological requirements are all unknown. Targeted surveys in the Congolese river systems associated with its type locality would be the necessary first step toward understanding whether it persists.
