Taxonomy & naming
Labeobarbus fasolt was originally described by Pappenheim in 1914, with the description published jointly in Pappenheim and Boulenger's contribution to Wissenschaftliche Ergebnisse der Deutschen Zentral-Afrika Expedition 1907–1908, volume 5. The holotype (ZMB 19061) was collected from the Ituri River in what was then the Belgian Congo, at approximately 1°29′N, 29°51′E — a locality now in the northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The species was originally placed in the broadly conceived genus Barbus and has passed through several generic reassignments as African large-barb taxonomy has been progressively revised. The genus Labeobarbus, long used for large African barbs, was formally reinstated for this group by Yang et al. (2015) and Vreven et al. (2016), and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records Labeobarbus fasolt as the current valid combination. A note of caution: Decru et al. (2022) have proposed that L. fasolt may represent a synonym of Labeobarbus caudovittatus, but that synonymy had not been formally accepted in the Catalog of Fishes at the time of this writing, and the species is retained under its original name here pending resolution.
The specific epithet fasolt honours Fasolt, one of the two giants in Richard Wagner's opera Das Rheingold from Der Ring des Nibelungen — a mythological figure chosen in reference to the impressive size of the holotype specimen.
Morphology
Labeobarbus fasolt is a large barb, with FishBase recording a maximum total length of 19.5 in — a size placing it among the bigger members of the genus. Like other large Labeobarbus, it has the robust, fusiform body typical of riverine barbs adapted for life in moving water: a moderately deep, laterally compressed trunk, a subterminal or inferior mouth suited to bottom-associated feeding, and a well-developed caudal fin for sustained swimming.
Detailed morphological descriptions from published post-1914 literature are sparse for this species, and the original description from the Ituri material provides the primary reference for its distinguishing characters. The benthopelagic ecological classification assigned by FishBase suggests the fish occupies both the lower and mid-water zones of its river habitat rather than being a strict bottom-hugger. Specific colouration in life is not well documented in available sources.
Habitat
The species is known from the Aruwimi, Ituri, and Uele river systems — major tributaries of the upper and middle Congo basin in the northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, a region of tropical lowland and foothill forest. These rivers are characterised by warm, turbid to moderately clear water, variable flow regimes, and a benthopelagic zone that large barbs exploit for both foraging and shelter.
FishBase classifies L. fasolt as a freshwater benthopelagic fish, indicating it ranges through the mid-water column and near-bottom zone rather than being confined to either extreme. The broad Congo basin context suggests water temperatures in the warm tropical range typical of central African rivers, with near-neutral to slightly acidic chemistry. Feeding

Were it to be kept — for example in a large public aquarium display — it would require a very large tank with strong filtration and significant flow replicating the riverine conditions of the Congo basin. Water chemistry should reflect warm, near-neutral tropical conditions. Any attempt to house this fish with smaller species would be inadvisable given its eventual size. The species is best regarded as a subject of scientific interest rather than a practical aquarium fish.
Conservation
Labeobarbus fasolt is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated February 2009. The species is endemic to the Congo basin in the northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo — an area that, while subject to ongoing political instability and human pressure, still retains extensive tracts of forested river habitat.
The primary conservation concern for large riverine fish in the Congo basin is the cumulative effect of artisanal fishing pressure, habitat alteration through forest clearing, and the potential for future hydroelectric development in river systems that have so far remained relatively undisturbed. The taxonomic uncertainty regarding L. fasolt's possible synonymy with L. caudovittatus means that its conservation status as a distinct taxon may require reassessment if that synonymy is formally accepted. No specific threats have been identified for this species in published conservation literature.
