Labeobarbus humphri was described by Keith Eric Banister in 1976. The authority is cited parenthetically — (Banister, 1976) — indicating that the species was originally placed in a different genus and subsequently moved into Labeobarbus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the current valid combination.
Labeobarbus is a large, diverse genus of African large barbs and yellowfish that has undergone considerable revision. African cyprinids that were historically lumped into the old, paraphyletic genus Barbus have been progressively reallocated across a number of genera, and Labeobarbus now accommodates many of the larger-bodied, riverine African species formerly scattered across Barbus and allied genera. The species is assigned to the Ituri/Epulu drainage basin of the eastern Congo, placing it within one of the Congo basin's most biodiverse freshwater systems.
The specific epithet honours Peter Humphry Greenwood (1927–1995), the distinguished English ichthyologist who served as Curator of the Fish Section at the British Museum (Natural History) and made foundational contributions to the study of African cichlids and other freshwater fishes.
Morphology

The species is described as benthopelaic and bottom-dwelling, suggesting it is built for life close to the substrate in fast-flowing water. Habitat
The type locality is the River Tabie, North Kivu District, Democratic Republic of the Congo, approximately 16 mi south of Beni, within the Ituri drainage. The Ituri is a right-bank tributary of the Congo River, draining the forested highlands of eastern DRC; the Epulu River, a sub-tributary, is particularly noted for exceptional biodiversity in its rapids and riffles.
Labeobarbus humphri is recorded as a species of fast-flowing, turbulent waters with rapids — an ecological setting typical of the larger Labeobarbus species of the Congo basin's tributary systems. Such habitats are characterised by high dissolved oxygen from constant turbulence, cool-to-moderate temperatures at elevation, and substrates of exposed bedrock, cobble and gravel. FishBase classifies the species as a tropical freshwater fish, consistent with the equatorial but montane setting of North Kivu.
Feeding

By analogy with other large Labeobarbus, appropriate conditions would include cool-to-moderate temperatures, neutral to slightly alkaline, hard to moderately hard water reflecting the highland geology of North Kivu, and a spacious environment with ample swimming room. The Congo basin as a whole supports exceptional freshwater biodiversity, and the eastern DRC tributaries draining the Albertine Rift highlands are recognised as particularly species-rich. Many species from these drainages remain poorly known, and the status of individual taxa like L. humphri can shift rapidly as survey effort increases.
