Taxonomy & naming

Labeobarbus iphthimostoma was described by Banister and Poll in 1973. The original description placed it in the genus Varicorhinus, which at the time was used for a broad assemblage of African and Asian large-mouthed barbs. Subsequent revisions of African cyprinid taxonomy transferred the species to Labeobarbus, the genus now used for the large yellowfish and related big barbs of sub-Saharan Africa. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the current valid combination as Labeobarbus iphthimostoma (Banister & Poll, 1973), with the parenthetical authority indicating the move from the original genus.

The genus Labeobarbus is a large and taxonomically complex group of African cyprinids encompassing species that range from highland trout-like yellowfish to large lowland river barbs.
