Labeobarbus jubbi was described by Max Poll in 1967, originally placed within what was then broadly circumscribed African cyprinid taxonomy. The genus Labeobarbus groups the large African barbs — sometimes called yellowfish — within the subfamily Torinae of the family Cyprinidae, and is characterised by a hexaploid (6n) chromosome complement that sets it apart from the diploid Asian mahseers and smaller barb genera.
The species belongs to the same broad radiation as southern and eastern African yellowfish such as L. kimberleyensis and L. aeneus, though its distribution in the upper Congo system is geographically remote from those southern populations. The specific epithet honours Dr. Reginald Arthur 'Rex' Jubb (1905–1987), a prominent South African ichthyologist and herpetologist who made substantial contributions to freshwater fish taxonomy in southern and central Africa during the mid-twentieth century. The Kasai drainage in this region flows through a transitional landscape between the Congo Basin lowlands and the central African plateau, producing rivers that can range from clear to moderately turbid depending on rainfall and season.
