Taxonomy & naming
Labeobarbus lobogenysoides was described by Jacques Pellegrin in 1935. Pellegrin was a prolific French ichthyologist at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris, and he described numerous African cyprinids from colonial-era collections. The authority is written with parentheses — (Pellegrin, 1935) — indicating the species has since been moved from the genus under which it was originally placed; the historical literature records it under the combination Barbus altianalis lobogenysoides.
The genus Labeobarbus Rüppell, 1835 accommodates a large and morphologically diverse assemblage of African cyprinids, related to the Asian mahseers (Tor) within the subfamily Cyprininae. The taxonomy of large African barbs is complex and has been subject to repeated revision; several names that were historically treated as subspecies of widespread species have been elevated to full species or synonymised as the group is re-examined with morphological and molecular data. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the current valid placement as Labeobarbus lobogenysoides.
The specific epithet lobogenysoides is a descriptive compound, likely alluding to morphological resemblance to another species in the "lobo-" lineage within the genus. No standard common name is recorded for this species. The name Labeobarbus paucisquamatus is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Labeobarbus lobogenysoides is a member of the large-bodied African barb assemblage, a group characterised by a moderately deep, compressed body, a subterminal or inferior mouth adapted for benthic feeding, and typically a fleshy rostral cap. Members of this genus vary considerably in adult size across species, ranging from modest river fish of 8–12 in to large migratory species exceeding 19.5 in.

Habitat

The Congo Basin encompasses a vast range of freshwater habitats, from the fast, well-oxygenated highland tributaries of the eastern rift margins to the slower, more turbid lowland channels of the central basin. Where the Loama falls within this gradient is not established in available literature.
Large African barbs of the genus Labeobarbus are generally associated with flowing river environments — main channels, rocky riffles, and sandy runs — rather than still water. Their subterminal mouths and robust bodies suit life in current, and they are often found foraging along the substrate in areas with moderate to strong flow. Specific water chemistry and temperature records for the Loama River are not available in the secondary literature.
Feeding

Adults show no guarding behaviour and will consume eggs given the opportunity.
In large migratory African barbs, spawning migrations to upriver gravel beds are documented for related species during peak flow seasons, with large aggregations forming at traditional spawning grounds. Whether L. lobogenysoides undertakes comparable movements in the Loama system is unknown. Fecundity, incubation duration, and larval development have not been described.

Labeobarbus lobogenysoides is not recorded in the aquarium trade and is unlikely to be available to hobbyists. Large African Labeobarbus generally require substantial aquaria — adult fish of related species reach sizes that make them impractical for most home aquariums — and their specific husbandry requirements are largely undescribed.
