Labeobarbus longidorsalis was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1935. It is placed within the subfamily Torinae — the large-barb and mahseer lineage — a widespread Old World group of cyprinids characterised by a fleshy, often lobed rostral cap and, in many members, a keratinised lower lip suited to scraping periphyton from hard substrates. The genus Labeobarbus encompasses the large African cyprinids loosely referred to as yellowfish and large river barbs, and L. longidorsalis represents the family's presence in the eastern Congo basin.
The specific epithet longidorsalis is a compound Latin adjective: longus (long) combined with dorsalis (of the back or dorsal fin), almost certainly an allusion to the elongated dorsal fin that distinguished the species in the original description. Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) records (Pellegrin, 1935) as the valid authority combination; the parenthetical brackets indicate the species was not placed in Labeobarbus in its original description.
Morphology
Labeobarbus longidorsalis reaches a maximum recorded total length of 12.5 in, placing it among the larger members of the African Labeobarbus assemblage. The species displays the cyprinid chisel-mouth morphology — a keratinised cutting edge on the lower jaw — that marks it as a substrate-scraping benthopelagic feeder adapted to hard rocky substrates. This structure functions as a rasping tool for detaching epilithic algae and biofilm from the surfaces of cobbles and boulders.
Beyond these diagnostics, detailed morphometric and meristic data for the species remain sparse in the published literature; access to the original Pellegrin description and subsequent revisions of the genus is required to resolve fin-ray counts, squamation, and lateral-line pore numbers with confidence. The elongated dorsal fin implied by the species epithet is presumably a notable character distinguishing it from congeners in the Luhoho basin.
Habitat
The Luhoho River is a left-bank tributary of the Lowa, which in turn drains into the Congo via the Lualaba — the upper main stem — in the eastern DRC. This is highland-influenced terrain with rivers typically running clearer, cooler, and faster than the lowland Congo mainstream; cobble and pebble beds are the characteristic substrate in such reaches, and these stony riffles constitute the core habitat of L. longidorsalis.
Specific water-chemistry data for the Luhoho are sparse in the open literature. Eastern Congo highlands generally produce rivers of moderate to cool temperature reflecting elevation, with hardness and pH influenced by the underlying geology. A 2021 habitat-association study (ResearchGate) directly linked L. longidorsalis to stony substrates and cobble/pebble runs in the Luhoho basin, confirming the species' affinity for well-oxygenated riffle and run habitats over soft-sediment reaches.
Feeding
The keratinised cutting edge of the lower jaw is the clearest functional signal in the biology of L. longidorsalis: this is a grazing, periphyton-scraping species. Such morphology is consistently associated with epilithic algae and biofilm as primary dietary components, cropped directly from the upper faces of submerged cobbles and boulders in fast-flowing, well-lit reaches.
As with many large cyprinids bearing this jaw architecture, the diet is likely supplemented opportunistically by small invertebrates, organic detritus, and diatoms dislodged from rock surfaces. No stomach-content study specific to L. longidorsalis has been published in accessible sources; the dietary inference rests on the convergent function of the chisel-mouth across the Torinae and allied grazing cyprinids worldwide.
Mating
No spawning-behaviour account specific to Labeobarbus longidorsalis has been published. Large African Labeobarbus species are characteristically seasonal, broadcast-spawning cyprinids. Courtship involves males pursuing gravid females through the water column or over the substrate; eggs and milt are released together in open water or over clean gravel, with no nest construction and no territory maintenance beyond brief courtship chases.
In related large African barbs, spawning typically coincides with seasonal river rises that deliver cooler, well-oxygenated inflows and signal optimal conditions for egg and larval development. The single-river endemism of L. longidorsalis means its breeding is timed to the hydrological regime of the Luhoho and the broader Lowa catchment.
Breeding
Labeobarbus longidorsalis, in common with all barbs and large cyprinids of its lineage, reproduces as an egg-scatterer with no parental care. Adhesive or semi-buoyant eggs are broadcast over coarse substrate or into the current, where they settle among gravel interstices or drift downstream into quieter water before hatching. Neither parent guards eggs or larvae, and adults do not form lasting pair bonds.
This species has not been bred in captivity in any documented hobbyist or commercial context. Its large adult size, specialized habitat requirements, and restricted distribution in a politically complex region make deliberate captive breeding essentially unprecedented. Reproductive biology details — egg diameter, clutch size, incubation period — are unknown from the literature.
In the aquarium
Labeobarbus longidorsalis is not an aquarium species in any meaningful sense. Its adult size of 12.5 in, coupled with the specialised fast-water, cobble-substrate habitat requirements typical of chisel-mouthed torines, places it well outside the scope of the hobby. The species is unknown in the ornamental trade, and no husbandry accounts exist.
For reference, large African Labeobarbus are generally cold to cool freshwater fishes suited to well-oxygenated, high-flow conditions — requirements that demand large, heavily aerated aquaria with powerful filtration. A grazing diet of algae and biofilm grown on rock surfaces, or high-quality vegetable-based foods, would be indicated by the jaw morphology. Conservation
Labeobarbus longidorsalis is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List (assessed 2022). Data Deficient is not a conservation status but a flag indicating that insufficient information exists to make a reliable assessment of extinction risk. The eastern DRC hosts some of the continent's most biodiverse freshwater systems and also some of its most acute pressures: artisanal gold and coltan mining along river corridors, deforestation of catchment slopes, and periodic civil conflict limiting scientific access and protective enforcement. The Luhoho basin in particular lies within a region of active resource extraction. Until dedicated survey work establishes population size, catch rates, and habitat condition, the species' true status cannot be resolved — and the DD designation should be read as a call for targeted fieldwork rather than reassurance.
