The species epithet lucius is Latin for "pike" or "light", likely applied as a reference to body form or colour, though Boulenger's original description gives the precise reasoning. The parenthetical authority marks that the species has been moved out of Boulenger's original genus since its description — a common pattern across large African cyprinids as generic boundaries have been repeatedly revised.
The genus Labeobarbus encompasses a broad assemblage of large African barbs, sometimes called yellowfish in southern Africa, distributed across river systems from the Nile to the Congo basin and southward into the Cape region. Molecular studies have confirmed the group is hexaploid — carrying six chromosome sets rather than the typical two — a trait shared across the genus and thought to have arisen from ancient hybridisation events.
