Taxonomy & naming
Labeobarbus mirabilis was described by Paul Pappenheim in 1914 from a specimen taken in the Ituri River near Mawambi, Ituri Province, in what is today the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The original combination was Barbus mirabilis, and the species has subsequently been transferred to Labeobarbus, the genus that accommodates many of the large African cyprinids commonly called yellowfish or large African barbs.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for valid nomenclature and continues to recognise Labeobarbus mirabilis as a distinct species, despite persistent suggestions in the literature that it may represent a junior synonym of Labeobarbus somereni, a larger east-central African barb found in the upper Nile and Albertine Rift drainage. Without additional material the question cannot be definitively settled.
The specific epithet mirabilis is Latin for "wonderful" or "remarkable" — an epithet sometimes applied to unusual type specimens whose characters stood out to the original describer, though Pappenheim's precise reasoning is not recorded in accessible secondary literature. The name Labeobarbus mawambi is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
No detailed morphological description beyond the original 1914 account is available in the accessible literature, and no photographs of confirmed specimens have been published in secondary sources. As with other members of Labeobarbus, the species would be expected to have the moderately elongate, robust body plan typical of large African riverine barbs, with a terminal or slightly subterminal mouth, one pair of rostral and one pair of maxillary barbels, and a well-developed pharyngeal dentition suited to processing plant matter and hard food items.
Size data are absent from post-type-description records. The genus Labeobarbus includes species ranging from medium-sized to very large riverine fishes exceeding 31.5 in, but no reliable maximum length can be assigned to L. mirabilis from the available evidence.
Habitat
The type locality is the Ituri River near Mawambi, a mid-elevation river draining the Ituri rainforest of northeastern DRC into the Congo Basin system. The Ituri and its tributaries flow through dense equatorial forest, typically carrying warm, moderately turbid to clear water over sandy or gravelly substrates with submerged wood and root tangles along the banks.
No water-chemistry data specific to the collection site of L. mirabilis have been published, and extrapolation from the broader Congo Basin should be made cautiously. Related large Labeobarbus species across Africa occupy a range of lotic environments from cool highland rivers to warmer lowland channels, generally requiring well-oxygenated, flowing water. Whether the species is restricted to the Ituri headwaters or occupied a broader range within the Congo system is unknown.
Feeding
No feeding data have been recorded for Labeobarbus mirabilis. Large African barbs in the genus Labeobarbus are broadly omnivorous to herbivorous, foraging on periphyton, aquatic macrophytes, fallen fruit, invertebrates and detritus depending on the season and local food availability. Labeobarbus species are known to make seasonal feeding migrations in some river systems, exploiting inundated floodplain vegetation during high water.
In the absence of any ecological data for L. mirabilis it is only possible to note that these dietary tendencies are widespread in the genus; any more specific statement would be speculative.
Mating
No mating behaviour has been observed or documented for Labeobarbus mirabilis. Large river barbs and yellowfishes across Africa are egg-scattering, non-guarding spawners. Courtship consists of a driving male pursuing a gravid female through the water column or over gravel substrate; the pair releases eggs and milt together without forming a lasting bond, constructing any nest, or establishing a territory beyond the brief act of spawning.
Many Labeobarbus species undertake seasonal upstream migration to spawn over clean gravel runs in faster water, cued by rising water temperatures or photoperiod at the onset of the wet season. Whether L. mirabilis follows a comparable pattern is entirely unknown.
Breeding
Like all barbs, Labeobarbus mirabilis would be expected to be an egg-scatterer that provides no parental care. Adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs are broadcast over the substrate — typically gravel or coarse sand in flowing water — where they settle and develop without any guarding by adults. Hatching times and larval duration depend on water temperature but typically run one to several days in related species.
No captive breeding of L. mirabilis has been reported, and the species is not kept in aquaria. Its biology at this stage remains entirely inferred from the wider genus.
In the aquarium
Labeobarbus mirabilis is not maintained in aquaria and is unknown to the ornamental fish trade. Only the original type specimen is known to science, and the species has no established husbandry literature.
For hobbyists interested in large African barbs, related and better-known Labeobarbus species from the Albertine Rift and eastern Africa are occasionally available through specialist importers, though most require large, well-filtered aquaria with strong flow and are more suited to public aquaria or very large private systems than to typical home set-ups.
Conservation
Labeobarbus mirabilis is listed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List. The assessment reflects the extreme scarcity of information: the species is known only from the type locality in the Ituri River, DRC, with no confirmed records since the 1914 original description. It is impossible to determine whether it survives, whether it was always rare, or whether it represents a valid species distinct from Labeobarbus somereni.
The Ituri Basin has experienced significant habitat pressure from artisanal mining, forest clearance and human settlement in recent decades, particularly following political instability in Ituri Province. Should the species exist in low numbers in a restricted range, these pressures would represent serious threats. A targeted survey of the Ituri River near the type locality is the most basic step needed to resolve both the taxonomic and conservation status of this enigmatic barb.
