Labeobarbus pojeri is a large African cyprinid described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1944 from the Epulu River, a right-bank headwater tributary of the Aruwimi in the central Congo basin of what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo. Long treated as a synonym and then formally revalidated in a 2024 taxonomic revision of Labeobarbus diversity from the Epulu drainage, the species occupies a corner of the vast Congo hydrographic system that remains poorly surveyed. It belongs to the yellowfish lineage of Labeobarbus — large, river-dwelling barbs of sub-Saharan Africa — and has no established common name in English or the aquarium trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Labeobarbus pojeri was first described by Max Poll in 1944 as Barbus pojeri, based on material from the Epulu River in the central Congo basin. The original combination Barbus pojeri placed the species within the once-enormous genus Barbus, which served as a catchall for African and Eurasian large-scaled cyprinids for much of the twentieth century. As systematic revisions progressively dismembered old Barbus, the African large-bodied species — the yellowfish and their relatives — were referred to Labeobarbus, and Poll's species was ultimately recombined as Labeobarbus pojeri; the parenthetical authority reflects that move out of the genus in which it was originally described.

For some time the name pojeri was not accepted as a valid taxon and was treated as a junior synonym, leaving it absent from most checklists. A 2024 taxonomic study of Labeobarbus diversity from the Epulu Basin, published in the journal Diversity (MDPI), formally revalidated the name and restored it to full species status. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the accepted authority for valid names; the current valid combination following that revision is Labeobarbus pojeri (Poll, 1944).

No subspecies or recognised geographic variants are currently documented, and no common English name has been established. The genus Labeobarbus encompasses the large African barbs broadly referred to as yellowfish, distributed across eastern, southern and central Africa, with the Lake Tana endemic assemblage in Ethiopia representing a particularly species-rich radiation.

Morphology

Detailed morphometric data for Labeobarbus pojeri are sparse in the available literature; the 2024 revalidation study focused on taxonomic distinctiveness within the Epulu drainage rather than providing a full morphological account accessible to non-specialists. As a member of the Labeobarbus yellowfish group, the species is expected to share the stocky, fusiform body plan typical of large African river barbs: moderately compressed laterally, with a subterminal or inferior mouth, large scales, and a robust caudal peduncle suited to life in flowing water.

Precise maximum size is not recorded in the sources available for this account. Large Labeobarbus species elsewhere in Africa commonly reach 12–23.5 in in total length, and some attain considerably more in major river systems, but applying those figures to pojeri without species-specific data would be speculative. Until a dedicated morphological treatment is published, exact measurements, scale counts and fin-ray formulae for this species remain data sparse.

Habitat

The type locality of Labeobarbus pojeri is the Epulu River, a right-bank tributary draining into the Aruwimi (Ituri) River, itself a major right-bank affluent of the Congo River in the northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The Epulu flows through the Ituri Forest, a vast equatorial rainforest with high rainfall and relatively stable temperatures year-round. Rivers in this region are typically clear to lightly tannin-stained, with moderate flow rates and substrates of sand, gravel and submerged wood.

Large Labeobarbus throughout the Congo basin tend to use main channels and larger tributaries, often associating with rocky or gravelly reaches where current is stronger and oxygenation higher. Specific microhabitat data for pojeri are not documented in the available literature, and the broader ecology of the Epulu ichthyofauna is incompletely known given the remoteness and limited sampling history of the basin.

The central Congo basin sits within the Congo Basin freshwater ecoregion, one of the most biodiverse riverine systems on the planet, with a high degree of endemism at all taxonomic levels. The Epulu and Aruwimi drainages in particular contain a distinct fish assemblage that has only recently begun to receive systematic attention.

Feeding

No specific feeding observations for Labeobarbus pojeri appear in the literature available for this account. Large African Labeobarbus are generally omnivorous to herbivorous opportunists, exploiting algae, aquatic macrophytes, benthic invertebrates, small fish and organic detritus depending on what the river provides seasonally. Many species in the genus use their subterminal or inferior mouth to rasp algae and biofilm from hard substrates, while also taking invertebrates swept into the current.

In the absence of species-specific dietary data, the feeding ecology of pojeri is best characterised as data sparse, and any detailed account would risk confusing it with other Labeobarbus for which more information exists.

Mating

Barbs of the genus Labeobarbus are egg-scattering, non-guarding spawners. No nest is built, no territory is defended through the breeding season, and no parental care is given to eggs or larvae. Large riverine Labeobarbus typically undertake seasonal spawning migrations into shallower, faster-flowing reaches or tributary headwaters when river levels and temperatures reach appropriate cues — a strategy common among large African cyprinids and shared broadly with Asian mahseers.

During courtship a driving male pursues a gravid female, pressing against her flank as the two release eggs and milt over gravel, coarse sand or rocky substrate. The eggs are adhesive or semi-adhesive and drift into interstices in the substrate; the adults disperse immediately afterward and take no further interest in the spawn. No species-specific observations of mating behaviour have been documented for pojeri.

Breeding

As with its congeners, Labeobarbus pojeri is presumed to reproduce as an egg-scatterer with no parental care. Eggs are broadcast over suitable substrate — gravel, coarse sand or rocky riffles — and left to develop unattended. Adults commonly consume eggs they encounter after spawning, an incidental consequence of their continued foraging rather than deliberate behaviour.

No captive breeding records for this species are known, and it does not appear in the aquarium hobby. Detailed data on spawning frequency, fecundity, egg size, incubation period, or larval development are absent from the available literature. Reproductive biology data for pojeri should be considered data sparse until dedicated field or aquarium studies are conducted.

In the aquarium

Labeobarbus pojeri does not appear in the aquarium trade and is not known to have been kept in captivity. The species was long treated as a synonym and was only formally revalidated in 2024, meaning it would not have appeared in any trade listings under this name. Large Labeobarbus in general are rarely kept by hobbyists outside specialist public aquaria due to their eventual size, their need for strong current and high dissolved oxygen, and the difficulty of sourcing legally collected specimens from remote river systems.

Any aquarium care notes would be highly speculative at this stage; the species is best regarded as a wild fish of scientific interest whose captive husbandry has not been documented.

Conservation

Labeobarbus pojeri has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; it is Not Evaluated (NE). Many African Labeobarbus species, particularly those from poorly sampled or geographically restricted drainages, lack formal conservation assessments, and pojeri's recent revalidation means it would not have been considered as a distinct taxon in any prior regional survey.

The Epulu River lies within and adjacent to the Okapi Wildlife Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the northeastern DRC, which affords some degree of habitat protection to the river and its surroundings. However, the broader Ituri region has experienced significant pressure from artisanal mining, logging, and armed conflict, all of which affect water quality and river habitats. The degree to which pojeri is genuinely range-restricted to the Epulu drainage versus more widely distributed in the Aruwimi system is not established, and that uncertainty makes any conservation status assessment difficult. Targeted surveys are needed to determine its actual distribution and population status.
