Labeobarbus wittei is a large African cyprinid described by Banister and Poll in 1973 from the Congo basin. Like other members of the genus Labeobarbus — the African yellowfish and large river barbs — it is a robust, deep-bodied fish built for strong-flowing water. Data on the species are sparse in the primary literature, and it remains little known outside specialist ichthyological circles; it has no established common name in the aquarium trade and is rarely, if ever, encountered in hobbyist collections.

Taxonomy & naming

Labeobarbus wittei was described by Banister and Poll in 1973, originally placed in the genus Barbus and carried in early literature as Barbus wittei. The species epithet honours the Belgian ichthyologist Gaston-François de Witte (1897–1980), a prolific describer of central African freshwater fishes who worked for decades at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences and contributed foundational knowledge of the Congo basin ichthyofauna.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the current valid combination as Labeobarbus wittei (Banister & Poll, 1973), the parenthetical authority marking its transfer out of the original genus. Labeobarbus is a large, diverse genus of primarily African large-river and highland barbs — the yellowfish of southern Africa and the large cyprinids of the Congo, Nile and Rift Valley drainages — separated from the polyphyletic old Barbus complex on molecular and morphological grounds. Within that genus the phylogenetic placement of L. wittei is not well resolved in the published literature.

Morphology

Specific morphometric data for Labeobarbus wittei are not well documented in accessible literature. As a member of Labeobarbus it is expected to show the characteristic features of the genus: a moderately large, fusiform to somewhat deep body, a terminal to subterminal mouth suited for bottom feeding, well-developed lips, and one or two pairs of barbels. The genus spans a wide size range; many of its Congo basin representatives are medium to large fish reaching 12–23.5 in or more in total length, though the exact maximum size for L. wittei is not confirmed from verified sources.

Coloration in preserved specimens of Congo basin Labeobarbus is generally silvery to olivaceous on the flanks with paler ventrally; live coloration, fin pigmentation and any nuptial colours are not described in sources available for this article. Habitat

Labeobarbus wittei is a Congo basin species. The Congo River system is the second-largest river basin on Earth by discharge and encompasses an extraordinary range of habitats: large, fast-flowing mainstream channels, quieter lateral pools, tributary streams across a broad elevational gradient, and the unique deep-channel environments of the lower Congo where extreme currents have driven exceptional endemism.

Large Labeobarbus in African river systems typically occupy flowing, well-oxygenated reaches — main channels, rapids, and rocky or gravelly runs — rather than slow, stagnant or heavily vegetated backwaters. Water chemistry across the Congo basin ranges from very soft and acidic in the black-water tributaries of the central basin to more neutral and moderately mineralised in highland and marginal drainages. The precise habitat preferences and depth range of L. wittei within the Congo system are not documented in sources available for this article.

Feeding

The feeding ecology of Labeobarbus wittei has not been described in accessible published sources. Breeding

No captive breeding records for Labeobarbus wittei are known, and the species is not represented in the ornamental trade. In wild populations of large African river barbs, reproductive success is strongly tied to seasonal hydrology: peak spawning coincides with the onset of rains and the rise and spread of floodwaters, which provide both the stimulus and the physical space — flooded gravel bars, submerged vegetation, temporary pools — for broadcast egg-scattering over suitable substrate.

Eggs and larvae receive no parental care and are subject to high predation and current-driven dispersal. Juvenile Labeobarbus typically recruit into slower marginal or tributary habitats where food is abundant and predation pressure somewhat lower before moving into the main channel as they grow. In the aquarium

Labeobarbus wittei is not established in the ornamental fish trade and is essentially unknown in the hobby. Large African Labeobarbus as a group present significant practical challenges for private aquarists: adult fish of many species grow to 15.5 in or beyond, require very large, powerfully filtered and well-oxygenated aquaria, and are not regularly available through retail channels.

Public aquaria with large Africa-themed displays occasionally keep representatives of the genus alongside other large African riverine species. For the private hobbyist, L. wittei is unlikely to be encountered, and no aquarium husbandry data exist for the species in accessible sources. Any future interest would need to draw on care guidelines developed for similarly sized Congo basin Labeobarbus.

Conservation

The conservation status of Labeobarbus wittei has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; no published assessment was found for this species. The Congo basin as a whole faces increasing pressure from artisanal and commercial fishing, habitat modification associated with agriculture and logging, hydroelectric development, and pollution from mining operations — particularly in the Katanga (Shaba) region and along major tributaries.

Large-bodied fish are particularly vulnerable to overfishing because they mature late, have lower intrinsic rates of increase than small species, and are targeted preferentially for food. Without a formal distribution estimate, population trend data, or threat assessment, the status of L. wittei cannot be evaluated responsibly. Increased survey effort in the Congo basin and formal IUCN assessment for poorly known species such as this one would be valuable conservation contributions.
