Pethia ticto, the ticto barb, is a small omnivorous cyprinid ranging from Pakistan and India east to Myanmar and Thailand, with populations also in Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. One of the most widespread barbs on the subcontinent, it inhabits the still, shallow margins of rivers, tanks and minor tributaries over muddy or silty bottoms, tolerating a broad span of water conditions that has let it persist across heavily modified lowland landscapes. Despite its abundance across much of its range, the species faces serious regional pressure — it is considered Vulnerable in Bangladesh and threatened in Sri Lanka — and its ease in the aquarium trade makes it a useful ambassador for the understated barbs of South Asia.

Taxonomy & naming

Francis Hamilton described Pethia ticto in 1822 from the Ganges drainage, originally placing it in the genus Cyprinus; subsequent workers moved it through Barbus and the broadly applied Systomus before it settled under the catch-all Puntius. The valid combinations Puntius ticto and Barbus ticto appear throughout older literature and trade catalogues, and both remain common synonyms.

The genus Pethia was erected by Pethiyagoda, Meegaskumbura & Maduwage (2012) to accommodate a cluster of small South Asian barbs sharing a distinctive morphological suite — among them P. ticto — split from the oversized Puntius. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Pethia ticto (Hamilton, 1822) as the valid combination; the parenthetical authority signals that the species was described under a different genus.

Pethia ticto is a variable and wide-ranging species, and its taxonomy at the population level is not fully resolved. Some workers have treated Sri Lankan and mainland Indian populations as distinct, and the species is sometimes referenced under the old combination Puntius ticto in regional checklists and conservation documents.

Morphology

Pethia ticto is a slender, moderately deep-bodied barb reaching up to about 4–5 in total length, though most wild fish and aquarium specimens are considerably smaller. The body is silvery to pale gold on the flanks, with a small dark blotch at the base of the dorsal fin and a second, more prominent dark spot at the base of the caudal peduncle — the two-spot pattern that gives rise to one of its trade names. The fins are largely colourless to pale orange, and the dorsal fin may carry a small red or orange flush in breeding condition.

Sexual dimorphism is moderate. Males are trimmer and more intensely coloured during courtship; females become noticeably deeper-bodied and rounder when gravid. The species lacks scales on the head and has a short, terminal mouth suited to browsing soft substrates and picking at small invertebrates.

Habitat

Across its range — Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand — Pethia ticto is characteristic of still to slow-moving, shallow, marginal waters: the edges of large rivers, seasonal tanks, minor tributary pools, irrigation channels, and backwaters with muddy or silty substrates. It is a benthopelagic species, spending much of its time close to the bottom in search of food.

FishBase records a preferred pH around 6.5 and a temperature of approximately 68 °F, though Seriously Fish data suggest the species can tolerate a broader range, with aquarium keeping at around 77 °F and a hardness of 175 mg/L (soft to moderately hard). The Croatian Journal of Fisheries account and FishBase both note an affinity for still, turbid marginal environments rather than clean fast-flowing hill streams. This tolerance for degraded, silty conditions may partly explain its persistence in heavily farmed and populated lowland regions.

Feeding

Pethia ticto is a foraging omnivore. Stomach-content analyses from Bangladesh document crustaceans, insects, plankton, plant material, and benthic invertebrates. Seriously Fish reports worms, insect larvae, small invertebrates, algae and organic detritus as dietary items across the range — a generalist profile well suited to turbid, shallow habitats where food sources shift seasonally.

In the aquarium the species is undemanding. Good-quality flake and small pellets are accepted readily, and condition and colour improve with regular supplements of live or frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia and blanched vegetable matter. Its small, terminal mouth means it targets benthic and near-bottom food rather than surface prey.

Mating

Pethia ticto spawns during the monsoon and post-monsoon months — the Croatian Journal of Fisheries account records an April–June spawning season in Bangladesh, coinciding with rising water temperatures and increased food availability. The species is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner: a driving male pursues a gravid female through fine-leaved vegetation or over silty substrate, and the pair press together briefly as eggs and milt are released.

No pair bond is formed, no territory is defended beyond the brief courtship chase, and no nest of any kind is constructed. Adults ignore the eggs entirely after spawning; in nature the scattered adhesive eggs settle among plant stems or on the bottom, where they develop without attendance.

Breeding

The Croatian Journal of Fisheries documents fecundity of 1,611–4,130 eggs per female in Bangladeshi populations, a broad range reflecting body size and condition. In the aquarium, breeding follows the standard egg-scatterer method: a separate, shallow spawning tank with slightly acidic to neutral water, fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, and a substrate grid or mesh layer to catch falling eggs before adults can eat them.

Seriously Fish recommends Taxiphyllum mosses or spawning mops as egg-deposition sites, mildly acidic to neutral water, and a modest temperature increase to stimulate spawning. A well-conditioned pair is introduced and typically spawns in the morning. Adults must be removed after spawning. Eggs hatch in roughly 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures, and free-swimming larvae are fed infusoria and then newly hatched brine shrimp. The species is not commonly bred in the hobby at scale, but responds readily to standard egg-layer protocol.

In the aquarium

Pethia ticto is a peaceful, active community fish suitable for a community tank with similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates. Seriously Fish characterises it as undemanding and compatible with other small cyprinids, loaches, and bottom-dwelling species. It fares best in a group of at least six, which reduces individual skittishness and allows natural social behaviour.

Tank conditions should reflect its lowland South Asian origins: a water temperature in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius, neutral to mildly acidic pH, and moderate hardness are appropriate, though the species tolerates a wider range. A planted tank with some open swimming space and a soft or sandy substrate suits it well. The ticto barb is not a common aquarium fish despite its wide range and ease of keeping; the tiger barb and similar larger species have largely displaced it in the trade, though it is periodically available through specialist importers and hobbyist breeders.

Conservation

Globally, Pethia ticto is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (Dahanukar 2010), reflecting its wide distribution across the Indian subcontinent, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand. However, the global assessment masks sharp regional disparities: Hossain et al. (2015) report that populations in Bangladesh are considered Vulnerable, those in India are assessed as Lower-Risk/Near Threatened, and the species is regarded as threatened in Sri Lanka.

The primary pressures are overexploitation for the aquarium and food fish trades and severe habitat degradation — drainage, siltation, pollution, and water extraction from the shallow marginal habitats the species depends on. The Croatian Journal of Fisheries account notes that populations have declined seriously in Bangladesh due to these combined stressors. Conservation of lowland wetlands, river margins and tank systems across the subcontinent is critical for the long-term security of P. ticto and the broader community of small cyprinids that share its habitat.
