Taxonomy & naming
Pethia gelius was described by Francis Hamilton in 1822 from ponds and ditches of northeastern Bengal — the type locality corresponds broadly to the modern Sylhet–Mymensingh region of Bangladesh. Hamilton placed it in Cyprinus, and the species subsequently passed through Systomus, Barbus and Puntius as the taxonomy of small Asian cyprinids was repeatedly revised. It is still frequently encountered in older aquarium and fisheries literature under the combination Puntius gelius or Barbus gelius.
The current valid genus Pethia was erected by Pethiyagoda et al. (2012) in a major revision of Indian barbs, splitting dozens of species out of the unwieldy catch-all Puntius. Pethia is characterised by a combination of morphological features including a complete lateral line, a serrated last unbranched dorsal ray and specific scale-count ranges. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Pethia gelius (Hamilton, 1822) as the valid combination; the parenthetical authority marks the transfer out of Hamilton's original genus assignment.
Within Pethia the species is sometimes grouped informally with other small, low-profile Indian barbs that share its preference for still and slow-moving lowland water rather than the fast, hill-stream habitats favoured by many of its congeners.
Morphology
Pethia gelius is a diminutive, laterally compressed barb reaching about 1.5 in in standard length (roughly 2 in total length at the outside), making it one of the smallest members of the genus. The body profile is moderately deep and ovoid, with a blunt snout and a small, subterminal mouth suited to picking small invertebrates from soft substrates and the water column. The last unbranched dorsal-fin ray is ossified and serrated on its rear edge, a genus-defining character.
The base colour is pale olive to silvery gold, with a series of faint dusky blotches along the lateral line that can coalesce into a loose mid-lateral stripe in some individuals. The dorsal and caudal fins may show a faint yellow or orange wash in well-conditioned fish, though the species is subtly coloured rather than boldly patterned. Females are typically deeper-bodied and more rounded when gravid; males are slimmer and may intensify slightly in colour during courtship. The overall impression is of a quiet, golden-toned little barb rather than a strikingly marked one — hence the common name.
Habitat
Across its native range in the Ganges and Brahmaputra river drainages — covering northern India (West Bengal, Assam, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh), Nepal and Bangladesh — Pethia gelius occupies the quieter, more productive end of the freshwater spectrum. It is most characteristic of sluggish streams, backwaters, floodplain ponds, roadside ditches and the marginal zones of larger rivers where current is minimal and the substrate is soft mud or silt. Overhanging and submerged vegetation is typically present.
SeriouslyFish records its preferred temperature range as 64–75 °F and pH 6.0–7.0 with moderate hardness (roughly 18–179 ppm), consistent with the mildly acidic to neutral alluvial waters of the Bengal plains. FishBase confirms a pH window of 6–7 and a hardness of around 10 dH. It is a benthopelagic fish, spending time both near the bottom and in the lower water column. In Bangladesh the species is most frequently recorded in the Sylhet–Mymensingh basin, which retains some of the larger intact lowland wetland complexes; it has become rarer or absent in more heavily modified parts of its former range.
Feeding
Pethia gelius is a micropredator typical of small Pethia and related Indian barbs. In the wild it feeds on small invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, tiny crustaceans and zooplankton — gleaned from the substrate surface, from plant stems and from the water column. Its small mouth and gentle disposition mark it as a picker rather than a pursuit predator, and it likely supplements animal prey with algal films and fine organic detritus where these are abundant in its silted, productive habitats.
In the aquarium it will accept good-quality micro-pellets and fine flake food readily, but thrives best when these are supplemented with small live and frozen items: baby brine shrimp, micro-worm, daphnia and finely chopped bloodworm. Its small mouth means standard-sized aquarium foods should be crushed or sourced in a suitably small grade. The species feeds throughout the water column and does not compete aggressively for food.
Mating
Like all barbs, Pethia gelius is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No pair bond is formed, no nest or territory is established, and there is no parental care of any kind. A receptive male courts a gravid female by following and driving her actively through fine-leaved vegetation or over the soft substrate, both fish pressing together briefly as eggs and milt are released simultaneously. The eggs are small and adhesive, falling among plant material or resting on the substrate surface.
Spawning in aquaria is typically triggered by seasonal cues mimicked by a slight drop in water temperature, good conditioning on live foods, and the introduction of fresh, slightly cooler, soft water. Males may display heightened colour and increased activity as they compete to attend a ripe female, though in this small and subtly coloured species such displays are relatively understated compared with larger or more boldly patterned barbs.
Breeding
Pethia gelius can be bred in the aquarium without great difficulty, though the small size of the adults and the eggs rewards some care with setup. A shallow breeding tank of 5.5–10 US gal with soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0–6.8), a temperature toward the lower end of the species' range (around 68–72 °F), and a generous growth of fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop provides appropriate conditions. A layer of marbles, mesh or a thick bottom planting helps protect eggs from the adults, which will consume them given access.
A well-conditioned pair or a small group with multiple males is introduced in the evening; spawning typically follows in the morning. The female may deposit a few dozen to a hundred or more small adhesive eggs across the plant mass. The adults should be removed after spawning. Eggs hatch in approximately 24–36 hours at 72 °F, and the larvae become free-swimming after a further two to three days. First foods are infusoria or commercial fry food; newly hatched brine shrimp can be introduced once the fry are large enough to take them. Growth is slow relative to larger barbs, reflecting the species' diminutive adult size.
In the aquarium
Pethia gelius is an excellent choice for a small, peaceful planted aquarium. Its gentle temperament and tiny adult size make it poorly suited to community tanks with larger or boisterous species, but it thrives alongside other small, calm South Asian fishes — microdevarios, small rasboras, pygmy corydoras or similar — and is ideal for a biotope setup evoking the slow, vegetated waters of the Bengal floodplain.
The species does best in a shoal of six or more, which reduces individual timidity and produces the most natural foraging behaviour. Water should be soft to moderately hard, mildly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0–7.0), and cool relative to many tropical aquarium species: 64–75 °F is the target window, and sustained warmth above 79 °F is stressful. Fine-leaved plants, floating cover and subdued lighting suit it well. The small mouth requires appropriately sized foods. This is not a flashy aquarium fish, but in good condition and a well-planted tank it shows delicate golden colouring and the restless, social activity of a contented shoal.
Conservation
The global conservation status of Pethia gelius is Least Concern, per the 2015 assessment by Dahanukar for the IUCN Red List (reference e.T166577A70088575). A separate Bangladesh regional Red List assessment (2014, published 2015) classifies the species as Near Threatened (NT) under IUCN criteria version 3.1 — a national-level judgment that can differ from the global picture when a widespread species is faring worse in one part of its range. The Bangladesh assessment notes that while the species' Extent of Occurrence and Area of Occupancy exceed the quantitative thresholds for threatened categories, the species was once abundant across Bangladesh but is now considerably rarer, with habitat in the Sylhet–Mymensingh basin among its last strongholds. It was previously listed as Data Deficient in the IUCN Bangladesh 2000 Red Book.
The primary pressure behind the Bangladesh regional decline is anthropogenic habitat loss and degradation — the conversion, drainage and pollution of the floodplain wetlands, backwaters and seasonal ponds that constitute its core habitat across the Bengal plains and adjacent regions. Collection for the aquarium trade is a lesser factor, though the species does appear in the ornamental fish trade. Its tolerance of degraded, turbid water may offer some resilience, but it cannot withstand the wholesale elimination of still-water wetland habitats. Conservation of the remaining lowland floodplain wetland systems in Bangladesh, India and Nepal remains important for populations at the more pressured end of the species' range, even where the global status is not one of concern.
