Taxonomy & naming
Puntius khohi was described by Dobriyal, Singh, Uniyal, Joshi, Phurailatpam and Bisht in 2004. The type locality is Stream Dogadda, a tributary of the Khoh River in the Garhwal Himalaya, Uttaranchal, India. The species epithet khohi refers to the Khoh River system from which it was collected, a naming convention common in Indian barb descriptions that ties the name directly to the discovery locality.
The genus Puntius, in its modern restricted sense following the sweeping revision by Pethiyagoda et al. (2012), now applies primarily to South Asian small barbs that do not fit the genera erected during that revision (Dawkinsia, Pethia, Systomus, Haludaria and others). Whether P. khohi will ultimately be reassigned to one of these segregate genera as more material is studied remains an open question; for now the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) retains it in Puntius. The ETYFish Project places the species among the Smiliogastrinae, the broader subfamily that contains most of the South and Southeast Asian barbs.
Given the species' sparse representation in the literature, no common name in English or any regional language has come into general use.
Morphology
Detailed morphometric data for Puntius khohi are sparse in the accessible literature; the species is known primarily from the original description and has received limited subsequent study. It is a small barb consistent with others in the Puntius sensu stricto group from northern India, almost certainly a slender-bodied, laterally compressed fish with the typical cyprinid profile of the hill-stream barbs of the Himalayan foothills.
Beyond the original description, no size data, meristic counts, or colour pattern notes have been widely published in English-language sources accessible to the hobby. FishBase records the species as benthopelagic and tropical in habitat but does not list a maximum standard or total length. Until further material is documented and described, morphological details remain data sparse.
Habitat
Puntius khohi is known only from the Khoh River system in the Garhwal Himalaya of Uttaranchal (now Uttarakhand) in northern India. The Khoh River drains the lower Himalayan foothills and flows through forested terrain before joining the lowland river network. Hill-stream tributaries in this region are typically fast-flowing, well-oxygenated, clear to slightly turbid, and range from cool to warm depending on altitude and season.
No specific water-chemistry parameters have been published for sites where P. khohi has been collected. By analogy with other small Himalayan foothill barbs, the species likely inhabits shallow, rocky or gravelly runs with moderate to strong current, relatively cool temperatures, and near-neutral to slightly alkaline water chemistry — conditions that differ substantially from the soft, warm waters of peninsular Indian or Sri Lankan congeners. The species' endemic status means that its entire world population is confined to this one drainage.
Feeding
No published feeding studies exist for Puntius khohi specifically. Small barbs of the Himalayan foothills are typically opportunistic omnivores, picking invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms — from the substrate and the current, supplemented with algae and organic detritus scraped from rocks and leaf litter.
Given the absence of contrary evidence and the uniformity of feeding habits among small Puntius-group barbs of similar size and habitat, the species can be inferred to be a benthic omnivore. Specific prey items and feeding ecology await formal study.
Mating
Puntius khohi has not been studied in the context of reproductive behaviour, and no captive breeding records exist in the hobbyist or scientific literature. Like all barbs, however, it is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner: no nest is built, there is no mouthbrooding, and no parental care is provided for eggs or larvae.
In related small barbs of Himalayan hill streams, males typically drive gravid females through vegetation, root mats or over gravel substrates, releasing eggs and milt in brief presses. The adhesive eggs drift or settle among substrate particles, where they hatch without adult attendance. Courtship activity and spawning seasonality in the wild likely track monsoon-driven temperature and flow changes in the Khoh River system.
Breeding
Puntius khohi has not been bred in captivity, and no aquarium breeding accounts exist. Its rarity in the trade and the difficulty of collecting from its remote Himalayan foothill habitat mean that captive populations are essentially non-existent.
In principle, the egg-scattering reproductive strategy common to the genus would make breeding straightforward under the right conditions — soft substrate or fine-leaved plant cover, cool and well-oxygenated water, and separation of eggs from adults after spawning to prevent predation. In practice, the species remains unknown to the hobby, and no confirmed captive breeding protocol has been developed.
In the aquarium
Puntius khohi is not present in the aquarium trade and is unknown in captivity outside its native range. The SHOAL Conservation Priority List notes that no species-specific conservation actions are in place, and there is no indication that the species has been established in any ex-situ programme.
For any hypothetical aquarium maintenance, Himalayan foothill barbs generally require cool, clean, well-oxygenated water with moderate current — conditions quite different from the warm, still water of most community tanks. Their care would be more akin to that of temperate river species than tropical aquarium fish. Given its Endangered status and extreme endemism, collection from the wild would carry serious conservation concerns.
Conservation
Puntius khohi is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List. The species is endemic to the Khoh River system in Uttaranchal, India — a single small drainage in the lower Garhwal Himalaya — making it inherently vulnerable to any threat that affects that watershed. The SHOAL Conservation Priority List (July 2024) includes P. khohi among priority freshwater fish and notes that no species-specific conservation actions are currently in place.
The principal threats facing small endemic barbs in the Himalayan foothills include habitat modification from hydroelectric development, water extraction for agriculture and expanding human settlements, sand and gravel mining in river beds, and seasonal pollution from agricultural runoff. Deforestation of the catchment increases sedimentation and destabilises stream hydrology, degrading the clear rocky habitats on which rheophilic barbs depend. Given the complete absence of any ex-situ safety net and the apparent lack of targeted in-situ management, the species' long-term security rests on the overall health of the Khoh River catchment.
