Poropuntius tawarensis is a large, deep-bodied cyprinid barb endemic to a single volcanic caldera lake in the highlands of Aceh Province, northwestern Sumatra, Indonesia. Known locally in Gayo as kawan, it is the only member of its genus native to Lake Laut Tawar, an oligotrophic lake sitting at roughly 1,200 metres elevation. Reaching nearly 5.5 in in total length, adults develop a distinctive gibbosity — a slight humeral hump — noted in the genus review by Roberts (1998). The species is Critically Endangered under the IUCN Red List, threatened by gill-net fishing, eutrophication, invasive carps and tilapia, deforestation, and declining water levels, all converging on a lake with an extent of occurrence of just 39 mi².

Taxonomy & naming

Poropuntius tawarensis was first described as Puntius tawarensis by Max Weber and Lieven Ferdinand de Beaufort in 1916, based on material from the type locality of Lake Laut Tawar in the Gayo highlands of Aceh, Sumatra. The parenthetical authority in the current combination — (Weber & de Beaufort, 1916) — marks the subsequent transfer out of the original genus.

The genus Poropuntius was reviewed comprehensively by Roberts (1998), who recognised the genus as a tropical Asian cyprinid group characterised by an enlarged pharyngeal process, a pored lateral line, and, in several species including P. tawarensis, the development of a gibbosity or humeral hump in larger adults. Roberts's monograph in the Natural History Bulletin of the Siam Society (46: 105–135, 1998) remains the primary taxonomic source for the genus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Poropuntius tawarensis as the valid combination.

The species epithet tawarensis is a Latinised toponym referring to Lake Tawar (properly Lake Laut Tawar), the sole known habitat of the species. The Gayo common name kawan is used by local communities around the lake.

Morphology

Poropuntius tawarensis is one of the larger barbs in its genus, reaching a maximum recorded total length of 5.5 in (FishBase). The body is moderately deep and laterally compressed, with large, well-developed scales and long barbels characteristic of the genus. Larger adult individuals develop a gibbosity — a pronounced humeral hump behind the nape — a character noted by Roberts (1998) as diagnostic among the species of Poropuntius.

The species is benthopelagic in ecology, occupying the middle and lower water column of its lake. Beyond the hump in adults and the relatively large scales, detailed colouration data are sparse in the available literature; the fish broadly resembles other medium-sized highland Sumatran cyprinids in having a silvery-olive body. Morphometric data on length-weight relationships and condition factors for this species were reported by Muchlisin et al. (2010), providing a baseline for population monitoring in Lake Laut Tawar.

Habitat

Lake Laut Tawar is a volcanic caldera lake in the Gayo highlands of Aceh Province, northwestern Sumatra, at approximately 04°36' N, 096°55' E, and roughly 1,200 metres above sea level. The lake reaches a maximum depth of around 80 metres and has an extent of occurrence of 39 mi². At this elevation it is cooler than Sumatran lowland waters; temperatures are typically in the lower tropical range, broadly around 72–82 °F. Water chemistry data for the lake are sparse in the available sources; the IUCN assessment notes the lake transitions from oligotrophic conditions toward eutrophication under increasing nutrient loading from agricultural runoff.

Diversity surveys by Muchlisin and Siti Azizah (2009) across freshwater systems throughout Aceh Province found Poropuntius tawarensis only from Lake Laut Tawar and not from any other river or lake in the province, confirming the species' strict endemism. The lake catchment is surrounded by agricultural land and remnant hill forest, and sedimentation from deforestation is among the habitat pressures noted by the IUCN assessment.

Feeding

Detailed dietary studies of Poropuntius tawarensis are not available in the sources consulted. As a benthopelagic barb, it likely exploits the bottom and mid-water of the lake, feeding on invertebrates, algal matter, detritus, and small organisms in the manner typical of similarly sized Poropuntius congeners. The genus review by Roberts (1998) noted trophic specialisations in some Poropuntius species related to substrate feeding, and the well-developed barbels of P. tawarensis are consistent with tactile substrate foraging.

The IUCN assessment records the species as targeted by directed gill-net fisheries in Lake Laut Tawar, indicating it achieves sufficient size and abundance to be commercially worthwhile — consistent with its near-5.5 in maximum length. Foraging behaviour in the lake has not been published in detail in the available ichthyological literature.

Mating

Like all barbs, Poropuntius tawarensis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No specific spawning observations for this species have been published in the accessible literature. By analogy with other large freshwater cyprinids occupying highland lakes, spawning likely involves gravid females being driven by males over suitable substrates — littoral gravel, root mats, or submerged vegetation — where eggs and milt are released together.

There is no pair bond, no nest construction, and no territorial defence beyond transient courtship chasing. Adults give no parental care and will readily consume the scattered eggs if they remain accessible. The lake's seasonal hydrology and any associated spawning triggers are not described in the available sources.

Breeding

Poropuntius tawarensis has not been deliberately bred in aquaria, and no published captive-breeding protocol exists for the species. In the wild it follows the standard cyprinid egg-scattering strategy: adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs are scattered over the substrate or among vegetation with no parental attention after fertilisation. Muchlisin et al. (2010) examined length-weight relationships and condition factors for wild individuals from Lake Laut Tawar, providing population data that indirectly support monitoring of reproductive condition in the field, but specific fecundity, egg diameter, or incubation data were not part of that study.

The species' narrow endemism and Critically Endangered status make ex-situ breeding a conservation priority that has not yet been documented in the peer-reviewed literature available to this article.

In the aquarium

Poropuntius tawarensis is not known in the ornamental fish trade and is not a species kept by hobbyists under normal circumstances. Its Critically Endangered status, strict lake endemism, relatively large adult size of nearly 5.5 in, and the absence of any captive-breeding record mean it is essentially unavailable outside of specialised Indonesian conservation or research institutions.

For those interested in the ecology of highland Sumatran fishes, the species serves as a compelling emblem of the fragility of endemic island lake faunas. Should conservation aquaculture programmes be established for the species in the future, a cool, well-oxygenated, neutrally to slightly acidic tank environment — reflecting the caldera lake conditions at around 1,656 ft elevation — would be the logical starting point.

Conservation

Poropuntius tawarensis is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List under criterion B1ab(iii), assessed on 12 April 2020. The extent of occurrence is just 39 mi² — the entire surface of Lake Laut Tawar — and the population, estimated at 10,000–100,000 individuals, shows a decreasing trend. The species occupies a single location with no sub-populations elsewhere.

The IUCN assessment identifies a convergence of severe threats: directed gill-net fishing pressure, water pollution from pesticides, fertilisers and domestic waste leading to progressive eutrophication, sedimentation from catchment deforestation, introduced invasive species (Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus, common carp Cyprinus carpio, and African catfish Clarias gariepinus), and declining water levels with potential future drinking-water extraction. No portion of the lake falls within a formally protected area, and local fisheries regulations are reported as unenforced. The combination of a tiny range, a declining and finite population, and multiple simultaneous threats places this species among the most at-risk freshwater fishes in Sumatra.
