Systomus jacobusboehlkei is a medium-sized freshwater barb from the river systems of mainland Southeast Asia, reaching around 4.5 in in standard length and inhabiting quiet, hilly stream reaches in the Mekong and Chao Phraya drainages of Thailand and Laos. Named in honour of the American ichthyologist James Erwin Böhlke, the species was described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1958 and carries the typical hallmarks of the genus Systomus: four barbels and a prominent dark blotch marking the caudal peduncle. Although little-documented in the aquarium literature, it occupies a broadly tropical lowland river niche similar to better-known Indochinese barb relatives.

Taxonomy & naming

Systomus jacobusboehlkei was formally described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1958. The species has passed through more than one generic assignment since its original description — earlier catalogue entries placed it under Bangana and Barbodes before the current combination under Systomus was established. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records Systomus jacobusboehlkei (Fowler, 1958) as the valid name, with the parenthetical authority indicating that Fowler's original genus differed from the current placement.

The genus Systomus is an Asian cyprinid lineage whose circumscription has been progressively refined following the major reassessment of South and Southeast Asian barbs by Pethiyagoda et al. (2012), which dismantled the old catch-all genus Puntius and distributed its constituent species into a suite of natural genera. Systomus retains a core of four-barbeled, robust Indochinese and peninsular barbs. The species' placement in this genus reflects morphological affinity with other medium-sized, four-barbeled barbs of the continental Asian river drainages rather than the Sundaland island lineages.

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum standard length of 4.5 in for Systomus jacobusboehlkei, placing it in the middle range for the genus — larger than many aquarium barbs but not approaching the size of the great mahseer relatives. The body form is typical of the group: moderately deep and laterally compressed, with a rounded snout and four barbels — two rostral and two maxillary — characteristic of Systomus.

A conspicuous black blotch on the caudal peduncle is noted as a diagnostic feature, a mark common to several Indochinese Systomus species. The precise pattern of body colouration is not well documented in the accessible literature, and the species remains poorly represented in hobbyist photography compared with its more widespread relatives. Detailed meristic and morphometric data were given in Fowler's original description and are summarised in regional ichthyological treatments of the Mekong basin.

Habitat

Systomus jacobusboehlkei is recorded from the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins, distributed across Thailand and Laos. Within these large river systems it is associated with quiet stretches of streams in hilly areas, a benthopelagic habit typical of medium-bodied barbs that feed along or near the bottom in moderate-current environments.

FishBase gives indicative water-chemistry parameters of approximately pH 7, around 82 °F, and roughly 5 dGH hardness — warm, soft to moderately soft, near-neutral water consistent with the upland and hilly stream reaches of Indochina. The Mekong drainage encompasses a broad range of water types, and the species' preference for quieter hilly reaches suggests association with smaller tributaries rather than the main stem of large lowland rivers.

Feeding

No detailed dietary study of Systomus jacobusboehlkei in the wild has been published in the accessible literature, but the foraging ecology of medium-sized Systomus barbs is well established: they are opportunistic omnivores that pick invertebrates, plant material and organic detritus from the substrate and the water column in their benthopelagic habitat.

The species' association with hilly stream reaches suggests a diet weighted toward small benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and crustaceans — supplemented by algae and particulate organic matter. In any aquarium context, standard omnivore fare (quality sinking pellets, live or frozen invertebrates, and some vegetable component) would be appropriate.

Mating

Systomus jacobusboehlkei has not been documented breeding in captivity in the available literature, but all members of the genus and family Cyprinidae in this lineage are egg-scattering, non-guarding spawners. No nest is constructed and no parental care is given at any stage.

Courtship in barbs of this type involves a driving male actively pursuing a gravid female through the water column or over the substrate, the pair pressing together briefly to release eggs and milt simultaneously. Colour intensifies in both sexes during this period, with the male typically showing the brightest pigmentation. There is no pair bond beyond the spawning act, and eggs once released are abandoned entirely by the adults.

Breeding

No captive breeding records for Systomus jacobusboehlkei have been located in the available literature. Based on the standard reproductive biology of Systomus and closely related Indochinese barbs, the species is almost certainly an egg-scatterer that deposits adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants, submerged roots or coarse substrate without any subsequent parental care. Adults should be considered capable of consuming their own eggs.

Breeding in comparable medium-sized barbs is typically triggered by a combination of warm water, good feeding condition and — in seasonal river environments — environmental cues associated with the onset of the rainy season. Spawning in a dedicated aquarium setup would follow the standard barb protocol: soft, warm water; fine-leaved planting or a spawning mop; and removal of adults after spawning to protect the eggs.

In the aquarium

Systomus jacobusboehlkei is not an established aquarium species and is not regularly available in the ornamental fish trade. It falls outside the core of commonly kept Indochinese barbs, and no dedicated hobbyist accounts of its care have been found in the literature surveyed. Its 4.5 in standard length would place it in the mid-to-large category for a community cyprinid, requiring a spacious aquarium.

Were it to become available, its habitat preferences — warm, soft to moderately soft water around pH 7 and 82 °F, with quiet water and a hilly stream character — would guide basic husbandry. As a four-barbeled, moderately large barb from continental Southeast Asia it would be best kept in a roomy, well-filtered tank with subdued flow zones, open swimming space and a soft or fine-substrate bottom. Its temperament, as inferred from congeners, would be active and likely shoaling, warranting group-keeping.

Conservation

Systomus jacobusboehlkei has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). No population trend data or range-wide threat analysis has been published for the species specifically.

As a resident of the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins, the species shares the conservation context of many Indochinese freshwater fishes: increasing pressure from hydropower dam construction on the Mekong mainstream and major tributaries, habitat modification from agricultural runoff and deforestation in hilly catchments, and fishing pressure in rural communities. The Mekong basin supports extraordinary freshwater biodiversity, and many of its smaller, range-restricted species remain poorly known and formally unevaluated. A formal IUCN assessment of Systomus jacobusboehlkei would require updated survey data on distribution and population size.
