Systomus jayarami is a small, little-known barb endemic to Loktak Lake in Manipur, northeastern India — a high-altitude oligotrophic lake embedded in the Brahmaputra drainage and one of the largest freshwater lakes in South Asia. Described by Vishwanath and Tombi Singh in 1986, the species has received almost no attention in the aquarium hobby and remains poorly studied in the wild; its highly restricted range makes it a species of quiet but real conservation interest. Like all members of the old Puntius aggregate, it is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner adapted to cool, clear, lightly mineralised hill-lake water.

Taxonomy & naming

Systomus jayarami was described by Vishwanath and Tombi Singh in 1986 from specimens collected at Loktak Lake, Manipur state, northeastern India. The original description placed the species in the broad, paraphyletic genus Puntius as it was then understood, and the epithet jayarami likely honours a person associated with the original collections or the zoological institution involved in the work — the precise biographical reference is not recorded in widely available literature.

Following the landmark revision of South and Southeast Asian small barbs by Pethiyagoda et al. (2012) and associated work, many species formerly assigned to Puntius were redistributed among a series of resurrected or newly erected genera. Species with a particular combination of meristic and morphological characters — including many large-scaled, stout-bodied Indian barbs — were placed in the genus Systomus, a name with nomenclatural priority dating to McClelland (1838). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) records the current valid combination as Systomus jayarami (Vishwanath & Tombi Singh, 1986), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the original description in a different genus. The species is sometimes encountered in older or informal literature as Puntius jayarami.

As a narrow endemic known from a single high-altitude lake system, S. jayarami has attracted little taxonomic scrutiny beyond the original description, and its precise placement within Systomus — a genus still being refined — has not been independently revisited.

Morphology

Systomus jayarami is a small barb reported to reach approximately 1.5–2 in in standard length. Beyond the brief data captured in the original description and subsequent ichthyological checklists for Manipur's freshwaters, detailed morphological accounts in the widely available literature are scarce, reflecting the species' obscurity both in the hobby and in active field research.

The genus Systomus is broadly characterised by a moderately deep, laterally compressed body, a relatively large last unbranched dorsal ray (which may be ossified or partially stiffened), and a scale count and fin formula that distinguish it from related genera such as Pethia and Dawkinsia. In life, many Systomus species display reddish or orange pigment on the fins alongside a silvery to brassy body, though specific colouration for S. jayarami is poorly documented. Given the cool, clear, oligotrophic waters of Loktak Lake, the species likely shows the streamlined build typical of hill-lake barbs rather than the deep-bodied form of sluggish lowland species.

Habitat

Systomus jayarami is endemic to the Loktak Lake system in Manipur, northeastern India. Loktak is a large natural freshwater lake lying at approximately 2556 ft above sea level in the Manipur valley, within the Brahmaputra River drainage. It is ecologically distinctive for its extensive floating phumdis — masses of vegetation and organic matter — which support a large wildlife sanctuary (Keibul Lamjao National Park) and a diverse aquatic fauna.

The high altitude and largely montane catchment give Loktak Lake a relatively cool thermal regime; water temperatures are estimated to range broadly between about 20 and 82 °F across seasons, and the lake receives cool inflows from the surrounding hills. Water chemistry is reported as slightly acidic to neutral (pH approximately 6.5–7.2) and soft (estimated dH ~2–6), reflecting the silicate-dominated geology of the basin. Systomus jayarami is associated with the clear, well-oxygenated nearshore and pelagic zones of the lake rather than the turbid, peat-influenced phumdi margins, though detailed microhabitat data are not available in widely circulated literature.

Feeding

Systomus jayarami is presumed to be an omnivore in the manner typical of small South Asian barbs, subsisting on small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and worms — together with algal film and fine particulate organic matter gleaned from the substrate and the water column. Its small size and the oligotrophic, clear-water environment of Loktak Lake suggest a diet oriented toward zooplankton and small benthic invertebrates rather than macrophyte material.

No published dietary study or gut-content analysis specific to this species has been identified in the available literature. Aquarium husbandry data are likewise absent, as the species is effectively unknown in the trade and has not been systematically kept or studied in captivity.

Mating

Like all barbs, Systomus jayarami is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No parental bond is formed and no territory is maintained beyond the transient pursuit of a gravid female by a ripe male. Courtship follows the typical cyprinid pattern: a male drives a female through vegetation or over the substrate, pressing alongside her as eggs and milt are released together. The eggs are adhesive and settle on plants or the bottom, where the adults take no further interest in them.

Spawning in Loktak Lake is likely seasonal, with the monsoon months of June through August representing the probable peak period as rising water levels, temperature shifts, and food availability cue reproductive activity across many South Asian cyprinids. No published observations of spawning behaviour in the wild or in captivity have been located for this species.

Breeding

Systomus jayarami has not been reported in captive breeding programmes, and no established aquarium protocol exists for the species. Its cool-water requirements — reflecting its high-altitude, oligotrophic lake habitat — would distinguish it from the tropical barbs most commonly bred in the hobby, and would necessitate a chilled or unheated aquarium in most of the world.

By analogy with other small South Asian Systomus and with barbs bred from similar highland habitats, breeding would be expected to involve the scattering of small adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants or a gravelled substrate, with the spawning pair removed immediately to prevent egg predation. Hatching time and larval development rate would depend on temperature but would likely fall within the range of two to four days to hatch at cool conditions, with free-swimming fry appearing a few days after hatching. The eggs receive no parental care at any stage.

In the aquarium

Systomus jayarami is effectively absent from the aquarium trade. Its extreme range restriction — a single lake system in Manipur, northeastern India — means that specimens have rarely if ever entered commerce, and no established husbandry literature exists for the species. Advanced hobbyists working with rare South Asian endemics would need to treat it as a cool-water subject: an unheated or lightly chilled aquarium maintaining temperatures in roughly the 68–79 °F range, with soft, near-neutral water and good oxygenation to reflect the oligotrophic Loktak Lake environment.

Should the species ever become available, it would be best kept as a shoal of six or more individuals — small barbs are social fish whose behaviour and colour are best expressed in groups — in a spacious, well-filtered aquarium with some planting and open swimming space. Its small size would make it compatible with other peaceful, similarly sized fishes. For now it remains a species of academic rather than practical interest to the hobby.

Conservation

Systomus jayarami has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). As a narrow endemic confined to the Loktak Lake basin in Manipur, it faces the suite of pressures that threaten lacustrine endemics throughout South Asia: deteriorating water quality from agricultural run-off and human settlement in the catchment, siltation, unsustainable fishing pressure, and hydrological modification. Loktak Lake itself has been significantly altered by the construction of the Ithai barrage downstream on the Manipur River, which raised water levels and changed the lake's ecology, with consequences for endemic species whose reproductive and foraging behaviour evolved under natural seasonal fluctuations.

The phumdi floating islands — a defining feature of Loktak — have expanded under altered hydrology, affecting the balance of open-water and vegetated microhabitats on which species like S. jayarami may depend. The Keibul Lamjao National Park affords some legal protection to part of the lake's catchment, primarily for the Manipur brow-antlered deer (sangai), but enforcement of fisheries and water-quality regulations remains a challenge. Given its extremely limited range, this species warrants formal IUCN assessment as a priority.
